Book Synopsis World of Wonders by : Aimee Nezhukumatathil
Download or read book World of Wonders written by Aimee Nezhukumatathil and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A poet celebrates the wonders of nature in a collection of essays that could almost serve as a coming-of-age memoir.” —Kirkus Reviews As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted—no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape—she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance. “What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts. Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy. Book Synopsis A Word With You: My Journal Through The Bible by : Al Lowry
Download or read book A Word With You: My Journal Through The Bible written by Al Lowry and published by Eric Elder Ministries. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wanted to read through the entire Bible? You can! Join Al Lowry as he reads through the Bible in a year using this Daily Bible Reading Guide. Each daily reading is accompanied by a few words from Al to gently nudge you to do what he once thought was impossible—to read through the most important book ever written. FROM THE INTRODUCTION I began writing this journal 9 years ago when a friend told me of a “Guilt-Free” reading plan that went through the entire Bible. He explained that the principle was to just take time to read or listen to that day’s passage— and if you miss a few days, to skip ahead to the current day’s reading. He said people will read through more of the Bible this way than if they stop part way for lack of “keeping up.” Then they can read it again the next year and pick up the passages they missed the first time around. I responded I just might be the poster child for quitting, as I would start well many a January, only to fall hopelessly away when tedious books like Numbers, Leviticus or Deuteronomy would sideline me in the first quarter. Then he challenged me in a very big way. He had one of the first online ministries called, “The Ranch,” at theranch.org. I read about it in USA Today and through a set of rather unusual circumstances, we became connected as good friends. He suggested I invite readers to follow along with me, and that 1st day of the year, I introduced a Facebook page with that very purpose. He gave me an invitation to include my plan in one of his online sermons and put out an open invitation to whoever might be inclined to join me. About 450 people signed up, and that set me on course with a lot of accountability partners with whom I would share a devotional each day. At the end of that year, I could not believe I’d finally accomplished this challenge of reading Genesis through Revelation. So what next—just be done with it? I decided to do it again the next year, and the next, and the next… I believe God has a sense of humor and turned me into the Forrest Gump of Bible reading. (Remember how he kept running back-and-forth across the country?) I mentioned we started with about 450 in our Facebook group the first year and now there are over 1500. This year, I decided to put the devotionals in book form so readers would have the option to join me online or by paperback. Regardless of your own motivation to read the Bible, I sure would be privileged to walk by your side. The goal is still the same as when we started—to grow in our faith by reading through as much of the Bible as we can. Hopefully, my light commentaries can give you that gentle nudge that helps you also do what I felt was impossible—to read the Bible in its entirety.
Book Synopsis World of Wonders by : Alf Hiltebeitel
Download or read book World of Wonders written by Alf Hiltebeitel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In World of Wonders, Alf Hiltebeitel addresses the Mahabharata and its supplement, the Harivamsa, as a single literary composition. Looking at the work through the critical lens of the Indian aesthetic theory of rasa, "juice, essence, or taste," he argues that the dominant rasa of these two texts is adbhutarasa, the "mood of wonder." While the Mahabharata signposts whole units of the text as "wondrous" in its table of contents, the Harivamsa foregrounds a stepped-up term for wonder (ascarya) that drives home the point that Vishnu and Krishna are one. Two scholars of the 9th and 10th centuries, Anandavardhana and Abhinavagupta, identified the Mahabharata's dominant rasa as santarasa, the "mood of peace." This has traditionally been received as the only serious contestant for a rasic interpretation of the epic. Hiltebeitel disputes both the positive claim that the santarasa interpretation is correct and the negative claim that adbhutarasa is a frivolous rasa that cannot sustain a major work. The heart of his argument is that the Mahabharata and Harivamsa both deploy the terms for "wonder" and "surprise" (vismaya) in significant numbers that extend into every facet of these heterogeneous texts, showing how adbhutarasa is at work in the rich and contrasting textual strategies which are integral to the structure of the two texts.

Beginning from Auggie’s point of view and expanding to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others, the perspectives converge to form a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.
Book Synopsis From Wilderness to Wonder by : Wilma J. Lansdell
Download or read book From Wilderness to Wonder written by Wilma J. Lansdell and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facebook Post--May 26, 2013 "But Mary treasured up all these things and PONDERED them in her heart." Luke 2:19 NIV. 'Pondered'--I love that word. I love the look on the face of a pondering child. I love the words from the mouth of a pondering grown-up. Isn't it interesting that God chose a pondering heart in which to do such a mighty work? Is His Spirit searching the face of this earth right now for a pondering heart in which to do some mighty work? I suspect so. Could He do a mighty work in my pondering heart? I hope so. I need Him to. My God pondering goes on. Is that part of what God uses to see us through the heartbreaks of our lives--the ordinary? Is that how He brings peace and joy to a "peace and joy" starved heart--through the ordinary? Does He put us in a place, after putting us in THE PLACE where we can do something marvelous that we could never imagine of ourselves? I wonder how often Mary pondered the question: Why is this happening to me? Oh what a gift--a pondering heart. This is my story--my ponderings in script--my journey from the wilderness of an empty, pain-filled heart to the wonder even in the pain when I ponder the majesty of God, the mystery of God, and the mercy of God. Do come and ponder with me

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An important step towards a new consciousness that will change the planet." -- Paolo Coelho Have you ever ignored a coincidence -- and wished you hadn't? Have you ever denied the truth of a dream -- and wished you didn't? Have you ever disregarded a hunch -- only to regret it? Then you have heard the new language of God. Albert Clayton Gaulden, founder and director of the Sedona Intensive, believes that the new language is God's mother tongue, the language in which His messages and guidance are expressed. Experiential and laden with messages, the new language isn't spoken chiefly in words (though sometimes it comes to us that way); it is rich in signs, symbols, wonders, and coincidences. When we open ourselves up to the new language, we can open ourselves to a larger and better life. When we learn to be receptive to the new language, we can begin to understand its unique grammar and rules, and to benefit from its grace. Signs and Wonders is an innovative work that offers practical strategies, anecdotes, case studies, and stories of personal transformation to expand our awareness of the new language. It teaches us how to listen to God and to understand the answers to our prayers, to know if we are on the right track when plagued by worry, doubt, and uncertainty. Focusing on the process that the author uses in his groundbreaking work as director of the Sedona Intensive, Signs and Wonders can help us all to learn how to clear "God's channel" and to master a new form of communication. "If prayer is about talking to God, the new language is about listening for His answers."

This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the author’s story of her ten-year journey of recovery and identity transformation from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Dr. Dee is a survivor who regained the ability to articulate what many TBI survivors cannot, and this powerful account, provided in real-time, portrays the many seemingly unrelatable symptoms of brain injury and subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Dee portrays how events pushed her beyond her limits and resulted in life-altering learning experiences, revealing a process of first figuring out how to live, then making meaning of her struggle. When half-way through her PhD program, Dr. Dee was crashed into by a car travelling at 65 miles per hour. She suffered a TBI. She lost her ability to read and write. She had a severe speech impediment and significantly impaired memory. Her journey of recovery, described in the book as her trek, spans four significant periods. The road begins with the loss of most of herself. Diagnosis and evolving symptoms show her broken pathway. The author goes through a rocky road of changes in her relationships and reidentification of herself as she finds her life coach, re-learns to read and write, and deals with mental health issues that felt like the end of her recovery. The final trek reveals hope and posttraumatic growth (PTG) and showcases the value of Disability Culture as a source of pride. This story is for fellow TBI survivors, their caretakers, families and friends, and professionals in the neurorehabilitation field. It brings light to the daunting changes after TBI and give hope for all who tread on this challenging path.
