Download or read book Just Ignore Him written by Alan Davies and published by Little, Brown Book Group. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A simply astonishing achievement. The quality, depth, emotional power and terrifying honesty of Alan Davies's story-telling take the breath away' Stephen Fry 'This hugely affecting book is brave, insightful and, at times, funny about things it is hard to be funny about' Jo Brand The story of a life built on sand. In the rain. In this compelling memoir, comedian and actor Alan Davies recalls his boyhood with vivid insight and devastating humour. Shifting between his 1970s upbringing and his life today, Davies moves poignantly from innocence to experience to the clarity of hindsight, always with a keen sense of the absurd. From sibling dynamics, to his voiceless, misunderstood progression through school, sexuality and humiliating 'accidents', Davies inhabits his younger mind with spectacular accuracy, sharply evoking an era when Green Shield Stamps, Bob-a-Job week and Whizzer & Chips loomed large, a bus fare was 2p - and children had little power in the face of adult motivation. Here, there are often exquisitely tender recollections of the mother he lost at six years old, of a bereaved family struggling to find its way, and the kicks and confusion of adolescence. Through even the joyous and innocent memories, the pain of Davies's lifelong grief and profound betrayal is unfiltered, searing and beautifully articulated. Just Ignore Him is not only an autobiography, it is a testament to a survivor's resilience and courage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes Abby thinks the most important event in her life happened before she was even born Abby’s not dying; in fact she’s perfectly healthy. If she were dead, maybe her father would grieve for her the way he’s still grieving for Johnny, who would have been Abby’s older brother if he hadn’t died when he was only two. Probably not though. The only time her dad even notices her is when he’s pushing her into an Ivy League college. And now that Abby’s oldest sister, Jocelyn, has left for med school, and Jess, the middle sister, has run away to pursue a major in drug and alcohol addiction, her mom is rarely home. Living among strangers, Abby writes letters and makes up imaginary dialogues with a boy that she’s too shy to approach. And she draws up her will over and over, trying to decide who should inherit her teddy bears and who should get all the guilt and recrimination that have accumulated in her family. Left alone—as always—Abby figures her choices are to be physically dead, emotionally dead, or really alive. But living means shaking things up, taking chances, and saying all those things her family would rather keep covered up. It might not end well, but what does she have to lose?

As the residents struggled economically due to increasing gentrification, the mob was seen as more of a potential savior than the corrupt politicians. The one-two punch of gentrification and displacement was felt most keenly in the South Brooklyn neighborhoods of Gravesend and Benconhurst. In spite of the influx of "Yuppies" and "Hipsters" robbing the area of its classic charm, the Italian Mafia fought to retain its presentence and control. Organized crime was struggling due to relentless pursuit by law-enforcement pursuing RICO cases. Yet, they maintained a presence, even if it was diminished in comparison to their legacy. Italian-American Teresa Cussimano and her nephew Anthony become involved with the mob when they desperately need help. But neither Teresa or the mob knew there was an informant working with the F.B.I. to build a RICO case. When mob members are finally arrested for Racketeering, Teresa feels an obligation to those who helped in her time of need. She becomes involved in the trial, on the side of the most unlikely of allies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guardianship is golden, in more ways than one. It is more supreme than a power of attorney. A power of attorney seems to be the correct way to assure your end of life accountings are in order. Majority of people complete the preparation for when their time comes. Some of us know little about guardianship. You either learn from others or find yourself in an actual unfortunate experience. Power of Attorney and guardianship are similar; someone has control. However, there is one huge difference if you have siblings and sometimes other family members in the picture. Once they are plagued with greed, they can change EVERYTHING. Our experience is a good example.

Born addicted to heroin in New York City, Adrianne was placed as an infant with loving, middle-class Jewish foster parents on Long Island. However, the demons of their respective biological mothers would eventually tear their fragile young lives apart as told in this compelling tandem narrative. Eventually, destiny would bring Johnny and Adrianne together, but first they had to endure the painful toll that alcohol, drugs, and a negligent court system would take on them. With parts of Adrianne's story ripped from national news headlines, their journeys take them for the depths of despair and near death to their first serendipitous introduction and the moment each knew they were finally safe. Filled with hope, inspiration, and humor, The Painting and the Piano is an unforgettable story of pain, loss, and the undying human quest for happiness.
Book Synopsis Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Adults: Ethical and Legal Perspectives by : Monty Nelson
Download or read book Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Adults: Ethical and Legal Perspectives written by Monty Nelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses and provides insight on the legal and ethical dilemmas of managing those with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This book provides a clear perspective for those clinicians and legal professionals who are working with those with this disorder, and correspondingly increases their understanding when arranging effective supports for this population. Historically, the primary focus on FASD has been on children. However, this is a lifelong disorder and the implications of this disorder become even more prominent and complex in adulthood. Those with this condition can struggle with impulsiveness, and a host of cognitive difficulties. This correspondingly impacts their independence and employability, and produces an elevated risk for homelessness and other residential issues, involvement in substance use, being exploited, development of behavioural issues, and subsequent legal difficulties. Their cognitive difficulties result in challenges for legal systems around the world to understand their issues, and to design appropriate remedial strategies, recommendations for treatments and supports, and even for understanding the failure of many of these individuals to be able to change their behaviours effectively. This produces various legal and ethical dilemmas, which are discussed in detail in this volume by 28 authors from Europe, New Zealand and North America. These include discussions regarding the rights of the unborn child, the alcohol industry’s duty to warn, whether small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy can be condoned, and even the current use of involuntary hospitalization for addicted mothers. Other chapters discuss the need for training on FASD for front line officers, use of lies during interrogation of those with FASD, medical and legal interventions for offenders with FASD, access to diagnostic services and follow-up supports, and whether FASD can be considered a mitigating factor for sentencing. Furthermore, caregivers also provide their stories regarding the daily dilemmas that are faced in raising those with FASD.

Book Synopsis Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship by : Aaron Goodfellow
Download or read book Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship written by Aaron Goodfellow and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the topic of gay marriage and families continues to be popular in the media, few scholarly works focus on gay men with children. Based on ten years of fieldwork among gay families living in the rural, suburban, and urban area of the eastern United States, Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship presents a beautifully written and meticulously argued ethnography of gay men and the families they have formed. In a culture that places a premium on biology as the founding event of paternity, Aaron Goodfellow poses the question: Can the signing of legal contracts and the public performances of care replace biological birth as the singular event marking the creation of fathers? Beginning with a comprehensive review of the relevant literature in this field, four chapters—each presenting a particular picture of paternity—explore a range of issues, such as interracial adoption, surrogacy, the importance of physical resemblance in familial relationships, single parenthood, delinquency, and the ways in which the state may come to define the norms of health. The author deftly illustrates how fatherhood for gay men draws on established biological, theological, and legal images of the family often thought oppressive to the emergence of queer forms of social life. Chosen with care and described with great sensitivity, each carefully researched case examines gay fatherhood through life narratives. Painstakingly theorized, Gay Fathers, Their Children, and the Making of Kinship contends that gay families are one of the most important areas to which social scientists might turn in order to understand how law, popular culture, and biology are simultaneously made manifest and interrogated in everyday life. By focusing specifically on gay fathers, Goodfellow produces an anthropological account of how paternity, sexuality, and masculinity are leveraged in relations of care between gay fathers and their children.

Book Synopsis The Sunset Strip Diaries by : Amy Asbury
Download or read book The Sunset Strip Diaries written by Amy Asbury and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-02-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There comes a time in every girl's life, when she has to choose good or choose bad. Amy Asbury chose bad, hands down. Good meant wallflowers, secretaries and subservient wives. Bad meant power- and a possible escape from a life of secrets. At twelve years old she was trying to make sense of a drug-addicted father and his disturbing behavior. By fifteen she was dealing with horrendous depression, blackouts and rape. At sixteen she was in a mental institution for suicidal tendencies and violent behavior. She knew she could never be normal. The only place for a girl like her was Hollywood. Read the true story of the social ascent (and eventual decline) of a girl in the Sunset Strip music scene of the early 1990's. From crazy parties to glittered junkies and man-eating strippers, Amy has chronicled what life was like back in the days of excess and debauchery. It is not just a fascinating look into an amusing time in pop culture, but also details the mindset of a young woman trying to find confidence and self-worth in a life full of pain and chaos. The party came screeching to a halt when the Grunge movement took over and heroin became more prominent. How far off track can a person go before it's too late?
