Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Experiences of the Boer War To be struck by the narrow formalism, and often unpractical character, of their strategical and tactical conceptions. If they are to be taken as the exponents of foreign military thought, then the study of the art of war has indeed fallen on evil days. In almost every article we mark the same defects. First, an entire ignorance of our system of government, of the elementary principles of political economy, and of the responsibilities of a great Colonial Empire. Second, a reckless treatment of evidence. Third, a positive disinclination to admit that the organisation, drill, training, and composition of Continental armies might possibly be bettered; and, lastly, the habit of testing strategical and tactical operations by a number of hard-and-fast rules. The quality may be inferred from the fact that one of the best known of German military historians declares that khaki was not taken into wear until after many defeats; that the English infantry attacked in solid line; that volleys were the only species of fire employed; and that the Boers never made use of the spade! Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Seven Generals in the Boer War: A Personal Narrative This narrative of my personal experiences during the Boer War covers the period between October 14th, 1899, and July 20th, 1900. It commences with my departure from England in the Dunottar Castle with Sir Redvers Buller and the Headquarters Staff, and includes with my return home in the same ship, and in the same cabin, after nine months' absence. It was my good fortune to accompany many different forces during the campaign, and I have endeavoured to describe what I saw of the various operations, together with the impressions conveyed to my mind by these and other events. The Editor of the Times has kindly allowed me to utilize my published and unpublished letters, and some of these have been incorporated with a greater quantity of fresh matter in the composition of the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Five Years' Soldiering in South Africa: A Personal Narrative N putting before my fellow-countrymen a Book on South Africa, I am conscious that some explanation is needed, and something of an apology. I have no great acquaintance with literature, but I know that scores of books have been written about South Africa during the last _few years, until I am told the public are pretty nearly sick of the subject. My explanation is, that this book is not about the Boer War, although it is dealt with in one or two chapters in which I relate my experiences as a Captain in Mounted Regiments of Irregulars. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Destiny of the Republic, this thrilling biographical account of the life and legacy of Wintson Churchill is a "nail-biter and top-notch character study rolled into one" (The New York Times). At the age of twenty-four, Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England. He arrived in South Africa in 1899, valet and crates of vintage wine in tow, to cover the brutal colonial war the British were fighting with Boer rebels and jumpstart his political career. But just two weeks later, Churchill was taken prisoner. Remarkably, he pulled off a daring escape—traversing hundreds of miles of enemy territory, alone, with nothing but a crumpled wad of cash, four slabs of chocolate, and his wits to guide him. Bestselling author Candice Millard spins an epic story of bravery, savagery, and chance encounters with a cast of historical characters—including Rudyard Kipling, Lord Kitchener, and Mohandas Gandhi—with whom Churchill would later share the world stage. But Hero of the Empire is more than an extraordinary adventure story, for the lessons Churchill took from the Boer War would profoundly affect twentieth century history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Buller in Natal: Or, a Born Leader It will be a long time before the story of the late war can be written fully and impartially. Even among the narratives of those who witnessed the engagements there are many differ ences and discrepancies, as is necessarily the case when the men who write are in different parts of the field. Until, then, the very meagre military despatches are supplemented by much fuller details, anything like an accurate history of the war would be impossible. I have, however, endeavoured to reconcile the various narratives of the fighting in Natal, and to make the account of the military occurrences as clear as pos sible. Fortunately this is not a history, but a story, to which the war forms the background, and, as is necessary in such a case, it is the heroes of my tale, the little band of lads from Johannesburg, rather than the leaders of the British troops, who are the most conspicuous characters in the narrative. As these, although possessed of many admirable qualities, had not the faculty of being at two places at once, I was obliged to confine the action of the story to Natal. With the doings of the main army I hope to deal next year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boers in War: The Story of the British-Boer War of 1899-1900, as Seen From the Boer Side, With a Description of the Men and Methods of the Republican Armies The war in South Africa spread over such a vast area of territory, and included so many battles, that no one man can hope to present a truthful picture of all the interesting events in one volume. It has been my aim, in the following pages, to show the Boer army, country, and people as they existed prior to the British occupation of Pretoria, and an earnest effort has been made to represent men and matters as they presented themselves to the eyes of an American. Personal feeling has been eliminated, and the Boers' apparent faults have been portrayed as truthfully as their good features. To those earnest friends of the Boers, who can see no fault in them, certain parts of the book will come as a rude shock, while other parts may offend Britons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Expeditionary Force at the start of World War I was tiny by the standards of the other belligerent powers. Yet, when deployed to France in 1914, it prevailed against the German army because of its professionalism and tactical skill, strengths developed through hard lessons learned a dozen years earlier. In October 1899, the British went to war against the South African Boer republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State, expecting little resistance. A string of early defeats in the Boer War shook the military’s confidence. Historian Spencer Jones focuses on this bitter combat experience in From Boer War to World War, showing how it crucially shaped the British Army’s tactical development in the years that followed. Before the British Army faced the Boer republics, an aura of complacency had settled over the military. The Victorian era had been marked by years of easy defeats of crudely armed foes. The Boer War, however, brought the British face to face with what would become modern warfare. The sweeping, open terrain and advent of smokeless powder meant soldiers were picked off before they knew where shots had been fired from. The infantry’s standard close-order formations spelled disaster against the well-armed, entrenched Boers. Although the British Army ultimately adapted its strategy and overcame the Boers in 1902, the duration and cost of the war led to public outcry and introspection within the military. Jones draws on previously underutilized sources as he explores the key tactical lessons derived from the war, such as maximizing firepower and using natural cover, and he shows how these new ideas were incorporated in training and used to effect a thorough overhaul of the British Army. The first book to address specific connections between the Boer War and the opening months of World War I, Jones’s fresh interpretation adds to the historiography of both wars by emphasizing the continuity between them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buller's Campaign: With the Natal Field Force of 1900 Why should a doctor write a book on war? The answer may not at first be apparent. Let us give it a little attention. Few, if any, books exist in which the position of a medical man on the battlefield is considered little is known about what first-aid work in the field really is little is known, even, by the initiated of what is to be expected. Like many other juniors, I had to cut my teeth, ' and it is partly with the hope of making this process easier to others than it was to me that I record my experiences. Had I had access in the beginning to a work similar to the present one, I should perhaps have obtained useful hints.
