Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of Everything, Everything and Five Feet Apart, a bittersweet story of love and loss, told one journal entry at a time. Sammie McCoy is a girl with a plan: graduate at the top of her class and get out of her small town as soon as possible. Nothing will stand in her way-not even the rare genetic disorder the doctors say will slowly steal her memories and then her health. So the memory book is born: a journal written to Sammie's future self. It's where she'll record every perfect detail of her first date with longtime-crush Stuart, and where she'll admit how much she's missed her childhood friend Cooper. The memory book will ensure Sammie never forgets the most important parts of her life-the people who have broken her heart, and those who have mended it. If Sammie's going to die, she's going to die living.

Book excerpt: What started as a project to capture some of her funny childhood memories in writing, evolved into a conscious awareness of little nuggets of widsom she'd gained through many of those experiences. It was in the writing where God began to open her heart to specific truths she had never before considered, including her most painful childhood experiences -- the ones she never intended to put into writing. As a result, her memoirs are a mixture of humor, inspiration and faith, that will not only have you laughing but will touch your heart as well.

Book excerpt: In this book, Linda Laidlaw explores the questions: What happens when children begin to write? Why is it that the teaching and practice of writing seems at times to be difficult in schools? How might teachers work differently to create more inviting spaces for developing literacy? The premise is that written texts and literacy processes are developed within a complex "weave" of particular contexts, or ecologies, and the unique particularity of the learner's experiences, histories, memories and interpretations. Laidlaw offers new information about writing and literacy pedagogy linked to current research in the complexity sciences and cognition, and considers the possibilities that might emerge for pedagogy when alternative metaphors, images, and structures are considered for writing and curriculum. The volume includes qualitative and narrative description of writing and literacy situations, events, and pedagogy, and elaborates the historical, theoretical, and curricular background in which such instruction exists within contemporary schooling. Reinventing Curriculum: A Complex-Perspective on Literacy and Writing: *addresses literacy through a focus on writing rather than on reading; *develops an approach to literacy and writing pedagogy that incorporates recent theories and research on learning and the complexity sciences; *examines perspectives on writing from both a teaching perspective and that of the work of writers; *makes connections between the acquisition of literacy to research in other domains; *examines both the benefits and the "costs" of literacy; and *challenges "commonsense" understandings within instruction, for example, that literacy teaching and learning can occur apart from other aspects of children's learning, context, and subjectivity, or that learning occurs individually rather than collectively. This book is important reading for researchers, professionals, teacher educators, and students involved in literacy education and writing instruction, and an excellent text for courses in these areas.

Book excerpt: If youve ever wondered if angels were real, if you have been fascinated with the supernatural, and if you have pondered whether there is any human on this planet that experienced a visitation from angels, then you would want to read my story. Just in case you may not fall into any of the above categories, I believe that this will still be a good read for you. Its true, amazing, spiritually titillating, and full of excitement. This is a short journey with me into my story of a visitation with angels. This is my face-to-face miracle of healing and restoration from a tragic place of discomfort, devastation, and death. I believe that death is a transition that shall take place for all mankind, but the fear of dying no longer exist to me since I had my encounter. It was June 24, 1998. Something very strange occurred in my life. I died. I came back to life, and I treasure and cherish every moment that I can as I relate this beautiful story. Ever since I was a child, I have had supernatural experiences in my life. I have literally seen angels and had encounters with them. I have been aware of things before they happened, or see things that the natural eye cannot see or explain. I dont mean to sound mystical or spiritually deep; I have had visits from angels. From the beginning of June 1998, I was aware that the angel of death was following me. It wasnt this handsome fellow that you see on television shows. It was grotesques and ugly. Unlike what we imagine it to look like, it was a dark shadowy creature with no face or features, but I knew who it was. I was not afraid. I only wanted to stay in the land of the living because my children were so young and I didnt want them to grow up without a mother.
