Download or read book The Briefcase written by Hiromi Kawakami and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tsukiko, thirty–eight, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, "Sensei" in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him "Sensei" ("Teacher"). He is thirty years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship–traced by Kawakami's gentle hints at the changing seasons–develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to an enjoyable sense of companionship, and finally into a deeply sentimental love affair. As Tsukiko and Sensei grow to know and love one another, time's passing comes across through the seasons and the food and beverages they consume together. From warm sake to chilled beer, from the buds on the trees to the blooming of the cherry blossoms, the reader is enveloped by a keen sense of pathos and both characters' keen loneliness.

Book Synopsis Soul Celebrations and Spiritual Snacks by : Alexandra York
Download or read book Soul Celebrations and Spiritual Snacks written by Alexandra York and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook on secular spirituality will appeal to both religious and nonreligious people. Basing its premises in values—and everyone has values—it offers broad avenues and private paths to achieve sustained, empowering, exalted, and expanding “Soul Celebration” experiences singular for every individual because each person’s value system is exclusively theirs alone. It also offers shorter, simpler “Spiritual Snacks” to provide instantly available, delectable bits of spiritual nourishment for spur-of-the-moment joyful experiences of being uniquely alive in today’s impersonal world. Our essential value center defines our distinctive personhood. This interior core can be activated by external stimuli into experiences of sustained secular spiritual bliss that celebrate our one-and-only inimitable personhood. How? By connecting to and uniting—becoming “One”—with three “other” here-on-earth entities that can stimulate our value center both emotionally and physically: nature, art, and romantically beloved humans. These three alone can open gateways that lead to the highest renewal of the essence—the soul—of Selfhood in a secular manner. By learning to approach the wonders of the physical universe selectively, we can experience a “merging” with chosen aspects of nature and come away with a glorious sense of having participated in eternity. A museum stroll, a novel, and music may turn into exhilarating experiences because art at its best expresses ideas that make manifest—in external, material form—the artists’ values. If they match our own, we may feel elevated to the point of experiencing the art aesthetically and spiritually. Romantic love with its sexual component is the ultimate secular spiritual experience because the most desirable and cherished human being is a living embodiment of our supreme values making this mind-body union the most sacred of all. Plus, happily, along with the three primaries, families and friends are rewarding subcategories for sharing marvelous spiritual-like experiences.

This story follows the trials and tribulations amid the culture shock of a middle-aged couple as well as the challenges facing a small foreign community working at an English immersion school in Numazu, Japan. After fifteen years of single life, former California surfer turned teacher, Will Mast, marries the coquettish Yumiko Hirota, an English teacher from Gotemba, Japan. Will takes a job at a prestigious English immersion school and quickly gets into trouble from his lack of knowledge of Japanese ways. Will commits one faux pas after another while eating at the family restaurant and attending a tea ceremony conducted by Yumiko's father, the tradition-loving, kendo-wielding master chef, Hirota Akihiro-san. At first seeming to be a simple tale of a cross-cultural marriage, one finds oneself immersed in the many layers of cultural interaction that America and Japan have faced, from Commodore Perry's Black Ships to the dropping of the bomb in Hiroshima. Weeks' first novel, Gaijin Teacher; Foreign Sensei, captures the courage, humor, embarrassments, idiosyncrasies, and tragedies of these special individuals as they interact with traditional Japanese culture.
Book Synopsis Searching for Japan by : Michele Monserrati
Download or read book Searching for Japan written by Michele Monserrati and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book pursues the specific case of Italian travel narratives in the Far East, through a focus on the experience of Japan in works by writers who visited the Land of the Rising Sun beginning in the Meiji period (1868-1912) and during the concomitant opening of Japan’s relations with the West. Drawing from the fields of Postcolonial and Transnational Studies, analysis of these texts explores one central question: what does it mean to imagine Japanese culture as contributing to Italian culture? Each author shares in common an attempt to disrupt ideas about dichotomies and unbalanced power relationships between East and West. Proposing the notion of ‘relational Orientalism,’ this book suggests that Italian travelogues to Japan, in many cases, pursued the goal of building imaginary transnational communities, predicated on commonalities and integration, by claiming what they perceived as ‘Oriental’ as their own. In contrast with a long history of Western representations of Japan as inferior and irrational, Searching for Japan identifies a positive overarching attitude toward the Far East country in modern Italian culture. Expanding the horizon of Italian transnational networks, normally situated within the Southern European region, this book reinstates the existence of an alternative Euro-Asian axis, operating across Italian history.

Tuazon makes an assault on ordinary life and storytelling, weaving together rich fiction from strings of seemingly unconnected characters, things, and events. Heralding his predecessors, J.D. Book Synopsis A Savitri Dictionary by : Rand Hicks
Download or read book A Savitri Dictionary written by Rand Hicks and published by Lotus Press. This book was released on with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri M.P. Pandit said of this work “Readers will be grateful to Rand Hicks for his labour of love in compiling these words in Savitri, used in a special sense, and presenting them dictionary-wise to facilitate easy reference. He has also added words that are likely to hold up a reader with an average knowledge of English.” The standard format used by Rand in this work is to set forth the word in alphabetica order, provide a reference for where in the text it appears (book, canto, line) and then to provide the definition within the context of the text. Rand Hicks is the guiding light at the Integral Knowledge Study Center in Pensacola, Florida. In his own quiet and persistent way, he provides an atmosphere of dedication and focus that uplifts those who come in contact with him. He recognized the need to aid those reading Sri Aurobindo’s Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol to enter into the precise and subtle uses of language that Sri Aurobindo employs, and to that end he developed a dictionary format with these terms defined briefly.
