I will take you through WWII glimpses by my father, to love letters he wrote to my mother, and all the details of growing up in America. Then, I will entrance you with the tales of faraway places, such as Morocco, Thailand, China, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, France, England, Russia, Greece, Argentina, and more. I will acquaint you with 5 years of living in Europe. You will also discover things you have never heard about, like “ice stock shooting”, a Central European sport, after 30 years of involvement. You will also discover my roots, dating back to 1451 on my Swiss side of the family. You will experience what my English ancestors went through coming to America from England in 1822. You will hear my heart singing through pages of poetry or lamentations to others. I have even included speeches I wrote while being a Toastmaster. I also expressed deeply felt eroticism in my poetry section, called “Erotic Awakenings”, where I express personal feelings of love and lust. Most of the book is written in rhyming couplets, either while detailing an adventure, or longing for love and acceptance. Also, many of my writings are letters to family and friends. Leaving home at 18, to travel abroad, captures the occasional youthful distress, but more of the excitement of discovering the world around me. Follow me through two marriages and many more adventures, both in California, and in New Hampshire, but mostly be part of my many adventures abroad. Jump on the Strauss plane and be captivated by the magic, the mystery, and the machinations of a poetic mind.

Book excerpt: In this collection, Doh straddles the Atlantic with voices that doubt, question, and lament the black predicament; voices that evoke the wisdom of Africas cultural values in a manner reminiscent of the continents orality. Like the echoing of the talking drums in the forests and the savannahs, these voices acknowledge the challenges and vexing truths of the hour: the plight of a people that have been buffeted repeatedly by waves of invasion, deceit, and betrayals, yet against which onslaught they remain standing, frighteningly tall in dignity and integrity.

Book excerpt: Recommended by Cosmopolitan, USA Today, Shondaland, & Book Riot “It’s not often that fat women feel such thorough representation of themselves not only in poetry but in any media and not only in the beautiful moments but in the sorrowful ones, ranging throughout life. James does a brilliant job of portraying this and all her themes brilliantly; highly recommended.” —Starred review by Library Journal The raw poems inside Song of My Softening studies the ever-changing relationship with oneself, while also investigating the relationship that the world and nation has with Black queerness. Poems open wide the questioning of how we express both love and pain, and how we view our bodies in society, offering themselves wholly, with sharpness and compassion.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Pick Named a Best Book of 2022 by The New Yorker “Paul Tran’s debut collection of poems is indelible, this remarkable voice transforming itself as you read, eventually transforming you.” —Alexander Chee, author of How to Write an Autobiographical Novel “This powerful debut marshals narrative lyrics and stark beauty to address personal and political violence.” —New York Times Book Review A profound meditation on physical, emotional, and psychological transformation in the aftermath of imperial violence and interpersonal abuse, from a poet both “tender and unflinching” (Khadijah Queen) Visceral and astonishing, Paul Tran's debut poetry collection All the Flowers Kneeling investigates intergenerational trauma, sexual violence, and U.S. imperialism in order to radically alter our understanding of freedom, power, and control. In poems of desire, gender, bodies, legacies, and imagined futures, Tran’s poems elucidate the complex and harrowing processes of reckoning and recovery, enhanced by innovative poetic forms that mirror the nonlinear emotional and psychological experiences of trauma survivors. At once grand and intimate, commanding and deeply vulnerable, All the Flowers Kneeling revels in rediscovering and reconfiguring the self, and ultimately becomes an essential testament to the human capacity for resilience, endurance, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful, inventive collection from one of America’s most critically acclaimed poets. Carl Phillips’s new poetry collection, Pale Colors in a Tall Field, is a meditation on the intimacies of thought and body as forms of resistance. The poems are both timeless and timely, asking how we can ever truly know ourselves in the face of our own remembering and inevitable forgetting. Here, the poems metaphorically argue that memory is made up of various colors, with those most prominent moments in a life seeming more vivid, though the paler colors are never truly forgotten. The poems in Pale Colors in a Tall Field approach their points of view kaleidoscopically, enacting the self’s multiplicity and the difficult shifts required as our lives, in turn, shift. This is one of Phillips’s most tender, dynamic, and startling books yet.
