Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller. Over 20 million copies sold! Translated into 60+ languages! Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving--every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results. If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights. Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, readers will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field. Learn how to: make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy); overcome a lack of motivation and willpower; design your environment to make success easier; get back on track when you fall off course; ...and much more. Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success, and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits--whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal.

Book excerpt: Three years ago, I lost my job. I didn't know how I was going to make it being that I was a single woman. I'd been doing things "my way" for the longest. I now know that when God instructs you to carry out his will for your life, there are consequences when you don't adhere. Although I was going through a tough time, my faith never wavered. I continued to spend quality time with God, attend worship service on Sunday ( even when I didn't have a tithe) and help as many people as I could. During this time, I began to hear what God was saying to me much clearer than I'd ever heard him. It was as if I was literally conversing with another human being. Each day he would whisper words of encouragement to me. I in turn would write it down, put it in text form and forwarded it to family and friends to encourage them.

Book excerpt: Becoming someone is a learning process; and what we learn is the new values around which, if we succeed, our lives will come to turn. Agents transform themselves in the process of, for example, becoming parents, embarking on careers, or acquiring a passion for music or politics. How can such activity be rational, if the reason for engaging in the relevant pursuit is only available to the person one will become? How is it psychologically possible to feel the attraction of a form of concern that is not yet one's own? How can the work done to arrive at the finish line be ascribed to one who doesn't (really) know what one is doing, or why one is doing it? In Aspiration, Agnes Callard asserts that these questions belong to the theory of aspiration. Aspirants are motivated by proleptic reasons, acknowledged defective versions of the reasons they expect to eventually grasp. The psychology of such a transformation is marked by intrinsic conflict between their old point of view on value and the one they are trying to acquire. They cannot adjudicate this conflict by deliberating or choosing or deciding-rather, they resolve it by working to see the world in a new way. This work has a teleological structure: by modeling oneself on the person he or she is trying to be, the aspirant brings that person into being. Because it is open to us to engage in an activity of self-creation, we are responsible for having become the kinds of people we are.

Book excerpt: Smarter decision-making based on cognitive science AlphaBrain is the investor's guide to achieving more, doing better, and reaching higher. At its core, the magnitude of your success is based on the quality of your decisions. The problem is that human beings are poor decision-makers; we tend to approach problems after they arise instead of planning for them in advance. We put too much weight on instinct, belief, and "gut feeling." We make the same mistakes over and over again—so reliably, in fact, that cognitive science can accurately predict exactly which mistakes we'll make and when. This book offers a way to understand and plan for the human mind's usual tendencies to help you make smarter investment decisions. Using a framework based on cognitive research, you'll learn how to approach decisions objectively, systematically, and constantly review your process; you'll take action based on evidence instead of intuition, and get ahead of potential problems before they get the best of you. With so much riding on the correctness of your choices, natural tendency can be a dangerous thing. This book shows you how to remove the bias and emotion to start making choices backed by hard evidence and objective data and lower your stress. Shift your processes from reactive to proactive Base decisions on reality over belief Eliminate cognitive bias and reduce common mistakes Make better decisions with a systematic, objective approach Why do we begin managing risk only once it becomes apparent? Why do we react to the market instead of making the big decisions before emotion takes over? Investing has always been a largely reactive field, but those who dominate it approach decision-making less like a human and more like a machine. AlphaBrain shows you how to get real about investing, with cognitive techniques that lead to smarter, evidence-based decisions.

Book excerpt: Managing Your Aspirations: Developing Personal Enterprise in the Global Workplace is written for anyone who meets with the question: "Tell me more about yourself and where you want to go in the future" and realizes that the answer is not simple. It is for those who are ready to take a step back from their regular routines to think seriously about another question: "Does what I'm doing today relate to my dreams and my identity?" The questions above pertain to personal development, a theme that has recently become a responsibility for individuals in corporate organizations and higher-educational institutions. To meet this relatively new need, Bob Aubrey, founder and CEO of Metizo, shares the Personal Enterprise Plan, comprising a set of personal development strategy tools that were previously created for leading multinational companies and top business schools. In so doing, he guides the reader through questions that give meaning and value to decisions about work, lifestyle and development, such as: Who will I become? How can I transform my dreams into reality? How do I balance my lifestyle and career priorities? What challenges and changes should I expect in today's global workplace? Whether you are at a crossroads in your life, just starting out in your career or wish to take stock of your life, Managing Your Aspirations will guide you in defining your identity, needs and goals, and working towards achieving your personal success.

Book excerpt: Being psychic, I should have known I'd end up living in Guntersville, Alabama--the most dangerous place for me given the exponential growth of my paranormal "gifts." An ironic twist of fate. Right?I'm only back in my hometown temporarily. I hope. What other choice do I have when my long-held dream of being a high-dollar defense attorney was stolen from me in Atlanta? Moving home was a frugal decision on my part, but it's not free. There are a mind-blowing number of strings attached-all unspoken, of course. We are southern, after all. It's rude to ask directly.I'm grateful for the room and board while I prepare for my rise from the ashes with a spectacular plan "B" to start my life. Still, it leaves me cobbling together odd jobs to pay for my monstrous student loan debts. My brother Dusty is researching the next installment of his best-selling "Thirteen Haunts" novel series. My "gifts" are in high demand. He offers me an obscene amount of money to assist his paranormal investigation team. The team's next excursion is to the Osborne hotel in Paducah, Kentucky. A poltergeist recently caused the death of one of the hotel staff.I must decrease my involvement with paranormal events. I've noticed with each exposure to the supernatural, my strange powers level up. Still, I'm going on their ghost hunting excursion. Did I mention the job pays exceptionally well?Uncle Howard left the law office in my hands while he takes a vacation to the beach. I think he has a love interest in Mobile. Not that it's any of my beeswax, except I'm left responsible for planning a credible defense to keep a mom of four out of jail, and I could use his advice. She's charged with murdering her husband-the prosecution is out for blood-no pressure there, of course. As if my dance card isn't full enough, Shane White, my "I wish he were my boyfriend" guy friend, comes for a visit.
