Book excerpt: With a view to supplying the demand of art and of science students, it was decided to select a number of the most important plates which were in the work published in 1887 with the title: Animal locomotion (which contained 20,000 figures) and republish them on a reduced scale. The selected plates in this volume demonstrate certain facts which occur in regular sequence, with uniform intervals of time during the accomplishment of some act of motion thus enabling the phases which characterise the transition from one period of movement to another period to be leisurely studied.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animals in Motion: An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Progressive Movements IN the spring of the year 1872, while the author was directing the photographic surveys of the United States Government on the Pacific Coast, there was revived in the city of San Francisco a controversy in regard to animal locomotion, which we may infer, on the authority of Plato, was warmly argued by the ancient Egyptians, and which probably had its origin in the studio of the primitive artist when he submitted to a group of critical friends his first etching of a mammoth crushing through the forest, or of a reindeer grazing on the plains. In this modern instance, the principal subject of dispute was the possibility of a horse, while trotting - even at the height of his speed - having all four of his feet, at any portion of his stride, simultaneously free from contact with the ground. The attention of the author was directed to this controversy, and he immediately resolved to attempt its settlement. Book excerpt: This photographic album is very likely a manuscript mock-up by Muybridge in preparation for his 1881 publication, The attitudes of animals in motion : a series of photographs illustrating the consecutive positions assumed by animals in performing various movements. In Gordon Hendricks' Eadweard Muybridge: father of the motion picture (1975), the author describes Muybridge's preparations for the published copy of these photographs by saying that Muybridge had spent late 1880 and up to May of 1881 "... processing, printing, collating, and arranging his 1878-79 photographs into a book ... published in May 1881, with the copyright date being May 17". Hendricks questions that date, however, since "...the book could not have been written, printed, bound, sent to Washington, and copyrighted in two days" (p. 116). However, it was possible to send a mock-up to LC for copyrighting purposes and perhaps this copy was one of a few attempts at putting together a well-designed mock-up for that purpose. It is further possible that the "upright" layout of this book was found to be unfriendly to a well-designed mounting of the photographic sheets, leading Muybridge to decide that an "oblong" layout would be better for the publication. This would explain the differing formats between this manuscript (upright) and those of the published copies (oblong). In Anita Ventura Mozley's introduction to the Dover ed. of Muybridge's Complete human and animal locomotion (c1979), the 1881 ed. was described thus: "The edition was small, about ten albums of original photographs, accompanied by the title page, dedication to Stanford, an index and a brief description of the equipment ...". The vol. described in this record includes only [3] leaves of prefatory text (hand-lettered in ink in block capitals), and lacks a separate leaf containing a dedication to Stanford: p. [1] is the t.p., p. [2] gives the "Plan adopted in taking these photographs" (which is not as much a description of the equipment as it is a description of the operation) and p. [3] is the index, which is keyed to the particular arrangement of photos herein (which are on 81 leaves containing 196 mounted photographs, mostly found 2 to a leaf, but sometimes as few as 1, up to as many as 5 to a leaf). All photographs have hand-inked captions in block letters and all leaves with mounted photos are hand-foliated.

Paint Lab provides readers with unique and experimental techniques and ideas in painting. The book is organized into fifty-two labs which may, but don’t need to, be explored on a weekly basis and can be accessed in any order. Paint Lab is useful for both beginning and more-experienced artists who are seeking inspiration and discovery. One section of exercises is inspired by fine artists including Paul Klee, Helen Frankenthaler, and Gerhard Richter. Several Labs explore the use of unique media such as combining molding paste with stencils, painting on burlap, using image transfers, sgraffito, and oil sticks. Exercises based on time and place delve into concepts such as tempo, linear rhythms, quick gestures, and both real and imagined locations. The book also showcases the inspiring work of several contemporary painters. Paint Lab provides an exciting framework in which to learn and gain expertise through experimentation and play. There is no right or wrong result, yet you will find new forms of expression in your work and gain confidence in your skills. Praise for Paint Lab “Artist and art instructor Forman offers readers 52 exercises designed to open up their painterly thinking and introduce them to a broader range of materials and techniques. Readers can explore painting by following step-by-step exercises in chapters on time, place, unusual materials, and color. Each lab is based upon a finished piece by either a working contemporary artist or by a 20th-century master such as Frida Kahlo, Paul Klee, or Helen Frankenthaler. Throughout, Forman emphasizes the value of play in creative endeavors. VERDICT Beginners and more experienced artists alike will benefit from this guide.” —Library Journal
