Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mutual Interests of Labor and Capital When the government owns everything and does everything and the people own nothing and do nothing, will we all be happy? Socialism Mr. President: Why not agitate for something that will bring happiness, contentment and prosperity to the world, instead of something that will bring strife, desolation, poverty and misery? What has the agitator to offer us after the destruction of what we have? Let us look first and leap afterwards. The Soul of the World is on fire. It is vibrant with the crushed hopes of the centuries. It is burning for something it has not had and that we must help it to get. The world needs statesmen, not politicians. The world needs wisdom, not words, just now. This is the hour for cool heads and calm deliberation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wage-Labor and Capital The first, entitled wage-labor and Capital, was trans lated for us by Dr. Harriet E. Lothrop, of Boston, from the standard German edition prepared by Engels in 1891. This is the only complete English edition of it that has yet appeared, and its accuracy was doubly se cured by a critical comparison of its every sentence with the German text, made at the request of the translator by Herman Simpson, of New York, who also added foot notes wherever comment seemed needful. In the perform ance of their respective task, both kept in mind the all important consideration, that in the works of Marx, as in all works, truly scientific, the exact expression is an essential factor and should not, therefore, be sacrificed to literary style in its transfer from one language to another. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations Between Capital and Labor in the United States Our government is made up of the people, by the people, and for the people. Whatever irritates and distracts any considerable number of its citizens comes close and quick in its sensitive pulsation to the heart and strength of our national life. With us government and people are synony mous terms. Like the brain and the body, they are bound together by innumerable and delicate nerves. Does the one suffer, then the pain is speedily communicated to every part of the body politic. We have no Strong, conservative and centralized force that stands apart by itself, governed by a special sovereignty, and controlled by a limited authority, in the maintenance of public peace and order. Do the people strike at the government and the civil rule, then they fall. We have no soldiers enlisted in their defence but them; no coercive power for municipal order and national unity but what they voluntarily contribute. Do the people make the assault upon our institutions, then Caesar has fallen by the hand of his bosom-friend Brutus. It would seem, then, that under such circumstances we must make some satisfactory solution of this difficult problem of capital and labor; that we must find some remedy for the disease, discover some palliative to sooth and allay its inflammation for, should it continue to increase in its maddened intensity and purpose, who will set the bounds to what it may destroy, who limit the extent of the upheaval and change it may produce, in the present social order and political system of the government of the United States? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Capital and Labor Unified, an Essay on the Application of the Installment, System to Investments The antagonism between labor and capital exists because they have not a large enough common interest. It is obvious that if the capitalist had to raise his capital among his own workmen, the relations between the two would of necessity be harmonious, and their interests would be largely identical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Law of Labor There can be no dispute between Labor and Capital, because they are the same thing, some say. But you cannot convince the man starting with his shovel Monday morning, that the ten milled dollars he hopes to receive on Saturday night are of one substance with the sweat and toil he feels must go with the shovel all the coming week. He would like to have the dollars by an easier process. The contractor, who expects one thousand of the dollars now lying in a bank vault, and who sees, before he can obtain them, a possible outlay of three thousand during the week, in his struggle with unseen rocks, concrete gravel, treacherous morass, and sluggish workmen, - this contractor cannot believe that labor and the dollars embodying capital are precisely the same thing. The capitalist who has loaned one hundred thousand dollars the previous week to many contractors, who has spent Sunday in nervous dread reading of strikes and of failures of construction companies, cannot be convinced that his capital and toiling labor are at that moment one substance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wage-Workers of America and the Relation of Capital to Labor It is said that all the laboring classes of the civilized world have been, and are, as a body poor. This is an incorrect statement, for the ques tion arises who are the poor and who are the rich Poverty and wealth are at best only relative states or conditions. When the ques tion is viewed philosophically, it is not proper to make a comparison from the standpoint of ownership. Or how much wealth one has, but conditions. One may be miserably poor and have plenty of money. Our object, however, is not to champion the cause of the poor with a View of making everybody rich, or to make the rich richer, or to take from them what by right belongs to them but what we contend for is justice, that all men may have an equal chance under the law of the land to acquire a competency, the same right that nature gives to every man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labor and Other Capital: The Rights of Each Secured and the Wrongs of Both Eradicated The laboring classes Of all civilized nations have been, and are, as a body, poor. Nearly all wealth is the pro duction Of labor therefore, laborers would have possessed it, had not something intervened to prevent this natural result. Even in our own country, where the reward Of labor is greater than in most others, some cause is Opera ting with continual and growing effect to separate pro duction from the producer. The wrong is evident, but neither statesmen nor philanthropists have traced it to its true source; and hence they have not been able to pro ject any plan sufficient for its removal.
