On se trouve aujourd'hui face à des positions souvent contradictoires et conflictuelles chez les fidèles des différentes religions : les uns affirmant leur identité religieuse et insistant sur la continuité de leur foi avec celles des origines ; les autres prônant l'innovation et demandant instamment des changements. L'ensemble de ces questions méritait une investigation rigoureuse. C'est pourquoi nous avons identifié trois axes de recherche. Le premier concerne les sources sur lesquelles chaque religion s'appuie, en particulier l'exégèse des Livres saints et de leur interprétation. Le deuxième axe, d'abord théologique, s'occupe des traditions par lesquelles chaque religion réélabore ses doctrines, les précise et les confronte à d'autres. Le troisième axe s'intéresse aux pratiques actuelles. Nous tentons de déboucher sur les critères élaborés par les religions pour justifier changement ou stabilité. L'objectif final est de définir, en conclusion, une typologie des mutations et des continuités observées. Cet ouvrage a voulu mettre en oeuvre les potentialités de l'Université catholique de Louvain en matière de sciences des religions. Y ont collaboré trente membres de l'Institut de recherche Religions, spiritualités, cultures, sociétés, encadrés par deux spécialistes externes : Danièle Hervieu-Léger (Paris, EHESS) et Baudouin Decharneux (Bruxelles, ULB).

Il montre comment la « crise du politique » aussi bien que le recours au religieux sont les symptômes d'une mutation générale du « croire », qui marque notre entrée dans l'ère du relatif. Les Eglises, investies d'une demande croissante de sens qui s'exprime notamment dans une quête éthique, sont elles-mêmes frappées de plein fouet par un refus général de la pensée normative. Penser le relatif, tel est donc le pari de notre fin de siècle, qui implique de le distinguer du relativisme, caractérisé par l'indifférence à l'autre et la prééminence du moi. La pensée du relatif, au contraire, ne peut émerger et se définir que comme une pensée de l'échange, de la circulation et du partage. Patrick Michel, chercheur au CNRS, enseigne entre autres à l'EHESS, à VINALCO et au Centre Sèvres de Paris. Il a publié plusieurs ouvrages sur les relations entre politique et religion en Europe de l'Est.

Susan Palmer offers an insightful examination of France's most stigmatized new religions, or "sectes," and the public management of religious and philosophical minorities by the state. The New Heretics of France tracks the mounting government-sponsored anti-cult movement in the wake of the shocking mass suicides of the Solar Temple in 1994, an event that ushered France's most visible religious minorities onto a blacklist of 172 "sectes" commissioned by the National Assembly. Drawing on extensive interviews and field research, Palmer describes the controversial histories of well-known international New Religious Movements including the Church of Scientology, Raelian Movement, and Unificationism, as well as esoteric local groups. Palmer also reveals the partisanship of Catholic priests, journalists, village mayors, and the passive public who support La République's efforts to control minority faiths - all in the name of "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity."
