Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By drawing on her extensive fieldwork in India and on the adjacent theoretical literature, Barbara Harriss-White describes the working of the Indian economy through its most important social structures of accumulation. Successive chapters explore a range of topics including labour, capital, the state, gender, religious plurality, caste and space. Despite the complexity of the subject, the book is vivid and compelling. The author's intimate knowledge of the country enables the reader to experience the Indian local scene and to engage with the precariousness of daily life. Her conclusion challenges the prevailing notion that liberalisation releases the economy from political interference and leads to a postscript on the economic base for fascism in India. This is an intelligent book, first published in 2002, by a distinguished scholar, for students of economics, as well as for those studying the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the minority of Tibetan Muslims among the Tibetan Diaspora. Most scholars remain unaware of the Tibetan Muslim community or its associations with Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. As a religious and political leader, he is the embodiment of Tibetan space, territory, population, religion, and identity. The Western public has assumed a monolithic vision of Tibet as a pure Buddhist Theocracy. However, Tibet was impacted by other religions, i.e. Christianity and Islam. The 1.000,000 Tibetan refugees in India are one of the largest Tibetan Diaspora; the majority are Buddhist, and the Muslim minority is estimated at no more than a few hundred families. Tibetan Muslims constitute a minority within another Tibetan Buddhist minority of exiled Tibetans in India. The study based on field research emphasizes a hybrid process of the Tibetan Muslim's Diaspora in exile. A cultural Buddhist Tibetan heritage associated with Kashmiri Muslim rituals and customs creates hybrid cultural practices and traditions, which could be characterized as rhizomatic.

He had never travelled outside his own city, yet one day he left home with two friends for a journey. Spooky events haunted them during their travels, while back home everyone considered Nalini to be dead. However, all did not go according to plan and he was stranded by his two companions at Kedarnath, a pilgrimage spot in India. Despite all odds, he started enjoying the companionship of the plethora of mendicants who were living all around the Himalayas. Nalini was mesmerized to witness the strength and power inherent in the ascetics. From there, Nalini started out on a winding journey with an illustrious sage. He witnessed the beauty of nature hidden in the deep of the Himalayas. As he travelled along with the sage, he met many people, delved into the labyrinth of their minds and acquired knowledge. At the end, a change came over him, transforming a simple nave old man into a soul dictator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines urban South Asia through the ideas of neighbourhood and neighbourliness. With a focus on the affective socio-spatial and sensorial experiences of non-metropolitan, small and intermediate cities, the chapters in the volume look at neighbourhoods as a key to exploring the textures of urban life. Bringing together scholars from a variety of disciplines including sociology, anthropology, urban studies, planning, and social history, the book highlights urban heterogeneity and contemporary transformations in South Asia. It discusses the linkages between urban lived spaces and social life; memory, migration, and exile; and the city and its society through practices of everyday life in neighbourhoods. With studies from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and India, the volume addresses a wide range of issues pertaining to urban experiences in their regional specificities and in a broader context of the Global South. This book will be useful to scholars and researchers of urban sociology, anthropology, urban studies, planning and development, social history, political studies, cultural studies, geography, and South Asian studies. It will also interest practitioners and policymakers, architects, planners, civil society organisations, and thinktanks.

Book excerpt: This book explores how the management science of logistics changes working lives and contributes to the making of world regions. With a focus on the port of Kolkata and changing patterns of Asian regionalism, the volume examines how logistics entwine with political power, historical forces, labour movements, and new technologies. The contributors ask how logistical practices reconfigure both Asia’s relation to the world and its internal logic of transport and communication. Building on critical perspectives that understand logistics as a political technology for producing and organizing space and power, Logistical Asia tracks how digital technologies and material infrastructure combine to remake urban and regional territories and produce new forms of governance and subjectivity.

This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title aspires to present a panorama of India’s yet to be fully discovered martial heritage, denoted by its unconquerable ancient epoch, a critique of the generally misread medieval age vicissitudes, followed by a survey of the contemporary & post-independence travails and triumphs. Not a historical narrative, it attempts to define what constitutes India’s natural-born military mind, how it evolved and breasted the world-conquering armies, followed by critical glimpses of the past ordeals, besides its uncelebrated defiance & conquests. The venture culminates in defining the nation’s prospective defence and development policy imperatives, for its emerging global role. It is rare in providing in one volume India’s scintillating perspective of the past, present and the future. The ardent quest, spanning over twelve years, is a reflective blend of a review of the Vedas, the Epics, relevant Shastras & other select material of help, with the author’s long years of rich military operational, planning and instructional experience. Poring over its pages answers many elemental questions, coming naturally to a lay reader, student, research scholar, man-at-arm, defence analyst and the policy maker. The thesis fills a gap by covering a wide range of archeological, historical, politico-military, socio-cultural and strategic and warfare issues, besides dispelling certain myths, which tend to demean India’s way of life and war fighting. The scrutiny of the post-independence wars comes to several untold finds. An exclusive study on ‘what motivates men in combat’ gives the subject an added depth. A lucid account of the nuances of the vital subject, bolstered by an unflagging perceptive probe, makes it an absorbing study.
