Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim calendar The Muslim calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar used by Muslims around the world to mark religious holidays and celebrations. It was instituted by the Prophet Muhammad and has been adopted as the official calendar in many Muslim countries. The Hijri calendar has 12 months in the year, each of 29 or 30 days, and a year has about 354 days. The months of the Hijri calendar are: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-awwal, Rabi al-thani, Jumada al- awwal, Jumada al-thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah and Dhu al- Hijjah. The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar that begins with the exodus of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, which is considered the year of the Hegira. The year of the Hegira corresponds to the year 622 of the Common Era (CE). So, if we are in 2023 of the common era, we are in the year 1444 of the Hegira. However, it is important to note that the Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar and the dates of the Hijri calendar do not coincide exactly with those of the Gregorian calendar, which is the most commonly used solar calendar in the world today. The Hijri calendar was instituted by Caliph Omar in the seventh century CE and is used by Muslims to set the dates of religious festivals and ceremonies. The dates of the Hijri calendar are about 11 days shorter than those of the Gregorian calendar, which means that Muslim holidays move back 11 days each year compared to the Gregorian calendar. The dates of the Muslim holidays are determined according to this calendar and can therefore vary from one year to another.

The majority of these participants were Hindus who added their own practices to these supposedly Islamic events. The French Indologist de Tassy adds his own pungent comments to those of his sources, thus providing in this volume a fascinating interplay of cultural perspectives. This is the first translation into English of this classic nineteenth-century French work.
