Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that in polite conversation the topics of religion and politics should be avoided but how long can most of us carry an engaging conversation on the weather? One who is concerned about the directions in which this nation is moving must necessarily discuss controversial topics. Have the labels liberal and conservative outlived their usefulness? Is liberalism truly a bad word? What are conservatives trying to conserve? Is it possible to rise above the din of partisan debate? These brief essays are critical comments on society, politics and religion in which the author avoids the pitfalls of extremism. The author, a minister of the Lutheran Church and with an interest in education, sees danger in extreme positions, religious or political, noting that the "right" produced Mussolini's Fascism and Hitler's Nazism whereas the "left" resulted in Stalinist Communism. Against rigid, absolutist positions as well as spineless relativism, one is reminded of the church mouse who once delivered a pertinent aphorism: "If you stand in the middle of the road, the traffic in two directions will flatten you into road kill" (Essay 10). The point is that controversial topics must not be ignored. Problems of narrowness, for example, have been tackled by the author in Essay 6, which begins with this paragraph: Some years ago an acquaintance who liked to speak in grand terms said to me in all seriousness, "My philosophy is the pursuit of happiness". It was narrow and egocentric but at the time I had no response. However, now, many years later, I have an answer to that unforgotten statement, thanks to a guest at St. James. Last month Dr. William Foege ... [from the Carter Center and Emory University], speaking at St. James, stated that there have been many attempts to define civilization. One of these is happiness, which caused him to wonder whether a three-year-old with a chocolate might be more civilized than the parents.

Book excerpt: Life is full of choices, decisions, memories, photographs, and—most importantly—love. When life is moving at full title, there's not always time to reflect on those everyday occurrences. Retirement allows us the time and presence of mind to sit down and take stock. That's just what the writers in Memories & Musings did. Written by "vintage" Minnesotans from The Guided Autobiography and poetry classes at Whitney Senior Center, their stories and poems are a collection of life's journey and the many paths taken. Inside, you'll find writing submissions that explore: Paths into creative writing Trails and tracks in nature Pathways of family members Passages through life's journey This anthology will make you think, laugh, and cry at the peculiar human condition we all find ourselves living. So, pour a mug of tea or coffee—maybe settle in with a glass of wine—and savor the diverse flavors of each writer's journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many of us, cancer is an inescapable reality. It is estimated that one in two people will be affected by the disease during their life. ‘Mortal Musings: Waiting for Dawn’ is a moving, thought-provoking and intensely personal account of one man’s journey. In October 2016 my indigestion turned out to be cancer. A few days later, the news got worse when it was discovered my cancer was not only rare and incurable, but it was Stage IV and I likely had only a few months to live. A death sentence like that naturally makes you think about your own mortality and what lies beyond. But I was not about to give in to the inevitable. I refused to believe in a no-win scenario. People say it is always darkest before the dawn, so I set about waiting for the sunrise. Being impatient, I did everything I could to hurry it along. Mortal Musings is about my fight -- physically, mentally and spiritually. It is about hope, faith and denial, how the cancer impacted my life and the lives of those around me, my treatments and the emotional struggle I endured. But it also delves into speculation about what lies ahead, beyond this mortal coil. That I am still here, three years later, is a miracle. That I am now cancer free is even more amazing. As Jimmy Valvano said, “don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” And I didn’t. **** “A must-read for anyone affected by this life-changing disease.” – Bethan White, Fade “A powerful testimony of how all of us must accept our own mortality.” – Richard Denham, Arthur: Shadow of a God

Book excerpt: Book 1: Engage in witty discourse and philosophical exploration with “Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy by Bernard Shaw.” George Bernard Shaw weaves a brilliant comedy that delves into the complexities of human relationships, societal expectations, and the eternal struggle between the sexes. This thought-provoking play combines humor with philosophical insights, making it a timeless exploration of the human condition. Book 2: Experience the humor and controversy of rural Irish life with “The Playboy of the Western World: A Comedy in Three Acts by J. M. Synge.” J. M. Synge's play takes center stage in a small Irish village, where the arrival of a self-proclaimed "playboy" sparks both admiration and scandal. This comedy unfolds with sharp wit and social commentary, offering a compelling glimpse into Irish cultural dynamics. Book 3: Delight in the lighthearted charm of “Daddy Long-Legs: A Comedy in Four Acts by Jean Webster.” Jean Webster's play brings to life the whimsical story of an orphan who receives a mysterious benefactor. As the narrative unfolds, it explores themes of identity, love, and self-discovery, creating a delightful comedy that has captivated audiences with its heartwarming humor.

In this collection of maxims, aphorisms, and just plain thoughts and unanswered questions - for nobody has all the answers - with a sprinkling of poetry (with rhyme and rhythm for a change), he has attempted to lend coherence - as only in writing do the inchoate broodings of the meditative soul achieve coherence - to the thoughts that visited his mind and the reflections they occasioned, over a great number of years. Readers will find much that strikes a responsive chord and much with which their spirit does not share a common ground; they will linger over some and remain unmoved by others; and become aware, perhaps, that thoughts should not just be thought, but thought about. "... to sit alone Musing - a deadly happiness!" Euripides - "Hyppolytus"

Perfect for fans of Six of Crows and Marie Lu. Seventeen-year-old Kira Fujikawa has never had it easy. She’s bullied by the popular girls in school. Her parents ignore her. And she’s also plagued with a secret: She can see yokai, the ghosts and demons that haunt the streets of Kyoto. But things accelerate from bad to worse when she learns that Shuten-doji, the demon king, will rise at the next blood moon to hunt down an ancient relic and bring the world to a catastrophic end. Not exactly skilled at fighting anything, much less the dead, Kira enlists the aid of seven powerful death gods to help her slay Shuten-doji. They include Shiro, a kitsune with boy-band looks who is more flirtatious than helpful, and O-bei, a regal demon courtier with reasons of her own for getting involved. As the confrontation with Shuten-doji draws nearer, the fate of Japan hangs in the balance. Can Kira save humankind? Or will the demon king succeed in bringing eternal darkness upon the world?

Book excerpt: "Lady Father" is a narrative account of my journey through the ordination process in the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia of the 1980's and the subsequent years of ordained ministry. As the first female admitted to the ordination process by the Rt. Rev. C. Charles Vach , 7th Bishop of Southern Virginia, who was then a strong and vocal opponent of the ordination of women, I was a "reluctant pioneer." Dubbed "the Lady Father," I have served the church for 25 years and I am now offering my experiences and the insights I learned from them to others who feel a similar call and who may find themselves on a similar journey "against the flow." "Lady Father" is filled with anecdotes that will ring true with many clergy, bring hope to those aspiring to ordination, and shed light on the continuing debate in the Church over who should be ordained. "The Process" described in the book is a journey most clergy have traveled, but my story is a unique blend of the obstacles, denials, and rejections I faced and overcame, along with the uplifting moments and spiritual growth that came out of the struggle. It is truthful and so, at times, it is painful; it is often light-hearted, even humorous; it is moving as it deals with real people, real events, and real emotions; and, most of all, it is mine - my story, my journey, my life.

Book excerpt: Dan Zaharoni is an asshole. He also happens to be a father. In this hilarious, often touching, book, Zaharoni gives the advice every parent secretly wants to hear: how to be an asshole, without truly screwing up your kids. The Baby Boomers had Dr. Spock, the Millennials are now stuck with The Complete A**Hole Dad, a viciously hysterical commentary on the state of parenting in the twenty-first century. Author Dan Indante, co-author of the bestselling Complete A**Hole’s Guide to Handling Chicks, has grown up and focused his sarcastic wit on the nearest and most innocent target--his children. Indante walks through nearly one hundred stories of his own parental incompetence while skewering the even greater incompetence of every father he’s had the misfortune of coming across at PTA meetings, Little League baseball games, and tequila-fueled six year old birthday parties.
