SO inseparably related are music and art to each other, that it would be difficult to consider either by itself. Whether the medium of expres sion be canvas or marble, poetry or sound, both represent the beautiful, the one making its appeal through the eye, the other through the ear to the heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Art of Music The following outline of the Evolution of Musical Art was undertaken, at the invitation of Mr. Kegan Paul, somewhere about the year 1884. Its appearance was delayed by the constantly increasing mass of data and evidence about the music of savages, folk music, and mediaeval music; and by the necessity of exploring some of the Obscure and neglected corners of the wide-spread story of the Art. And though the subject was almost constantly under consideration, with a few inevitable interruptions, the book was not completed till 1893. My experience tells me that it is the oldest and grandest of all arts. To tell the story then, in one small volume, of a subject which dates from Creation, is no easy matter, it would seem. My plan has been to be as concise as possible to keep the running note of theoretical and in strumental progress and development before the reader; also to be non-technical where plain language would answer. Mention has been made only of composers and matters, who and which have actually moved the art onwards; and, inasmuch as one topic alone of the subject - say Form or Orchestration, could not possibly be adequately treated in the space allotted for my entire story, I must be pardoned if I have seemed to slip away from important points. The difficulty has been to get away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Music, Vol. 4 of 14: A Comprehensive Library of Information for Music Lovers and Musicians Prophecy, not history, is the most truly important concern of music in America. What a new world, with new processes and new ideals, will do with the tract able and still unformed art of music; what will arise from the contact of this art with our unprecedented democracy - these are the questions of deepest import in our musical life in the United States. The past has consisted chie y of a tasting of the musical art and traditions of the old world. The present is divided between imitation of the old and searching for the new, both in quality and application. The fruitage of our national musical life is still for the future. Intense as are the activities of the present, they are still merely the preparation of the soil for a future growth the nature and extent of which we can only guess at to-day. The stream of musical evolution in America, in the present transitional period, is rapidly over owing its wonted banks, and passing the bounda ries of the traditional musical world. The many are striving to obtain that which has been the exclusive possession of the few, and in this endeavor are not only extending, but also actually transforming the art. The paramount issues change with the passing of the sea sons. One imported European sensation gives way to another. The problem of the true basis of American music dissolves overnight, and gives way to the prob. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Donald Francis Tovey Born in 1 875, Donald Francis Tovey was a British musicologist and composer. He took classical honors with his B. A. at Ox ford in 1898, and became a pianist of the first rank, though he never sought a virtuoso career. From 1914 to 1940 he was Reid Professor of Music at Edinburgh University. He died in 1 940. His other books include Normality and Freedom in Music, The Main Stream of Music, A Musician Talks, Essays in Musical Analysis, and Beethoven. ivx Meridian Books edition first published October 1956 First printing September 1956 Second printing June 1957 Third printing July 1958 Fourth printing April 1959 Fifth printing December 1959 Reprinted by arrangement with Oxford University Press Originally published 1944 as Musical Articles from the Encyclopaedia Britannica Library of Congress catalog card number 56-10015 Manufactured in the United States of America EDITORIAL PREFACE THE desire to set down upon paper a comprehensive system of musical education was present in the mind of Donald Tovey for the greater part of his life. In 1896, when he was 21, he wrote in a letter to a friend that he had begun a great work quot on the means of Expression in Music quot If ever I finish the thing, into print it shall go. Thirty years later, he was talking about a series of four text-books on music. But into print neither the one scheme nor the other went the final expression of his ideas on music was never written. It never could be written, because it was never final in the mind of that incessant discoverer in music. Nor was his method of writing that of finality. The nearest point to finality which Tovey ever reached in his expression of a formal philosophy in music is tobe found in the articles on technique and aesthetics of music as he called them himself in the list of his writings supplied to Who s Who which he contributed to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Those articles, written from 1906 onwards for the eleventh edition of the Ency clopaedia, and revised again, almost rewritten, for the fourteenth edition in 1929, were necessarily cast in the imposed form of treatises under word-headings. Yet they coalesce very firmly into a clear and coherent testament, almost into a text-book of the art of music in its widest meaning. Like the Glossary to the Essays in Musical Analysis, the entries are unconnected, the whole comprehensive, and while not attempting completeness, afford the reader a wider range of musical thought and a fuller discussion of technical problems than most of the exhaustive and laborious theses now available. Tovey himself set great store by these articles. They formed for him the basis of his teaching at the University of Edinburgh. They are the background to those fuller considerations of musical compositions which are his Essays in Musical Analysis. It was his own proposal that these articles should be gathered together into one volume, an idea expressed to me as long ago as 1926. Means were then taken towards the end of publishing, and it was agreed that Tovey should in his own time make any alterations or correc tions necessary for the new method of presentation. But many other fresh and no doubt more important ideas and schemes came bubbling up into that wonderfully fertile brain, and nothing was done about the book of musical articles. I say more important because, though he was in life so fully occupied, it has now been foundpossible to publish these articles after the author s death. This book contains all the articles which Tovey wrote for the VI EDITORIAL PREFACE Encyclopaedia Britannica, as they now appear there, with the exception of one on Modern Music and the biographies. The book was set up from printed slips, and thus follows the text finally approved and corrected by the author. The very long musical examples are printed in full...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Purity in Musical Art The fact that this Essay was first published more than half a century ago, might seem, at first sight, to render its translation now a work of doubtful utility. But, inasmuch as it is still in demand in Germany, as is proved by the publication of the Fifth Edition as recently as in 1875, and looking to the great extension of the study and practice of music in our own country, I am persuaded that it will be read both with interest and with profit in England. It is a complex task, not only because of its novelty and many-sidedness, but also because of the complexity which Soviet music reveals in its relation to Soviet life as a whole. However, it is a task which should not be deferred and one which, in the author's opinion, is a cardi nal and decisive one in contemporary musicology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musical Art and Study: Papers for Musicians The third of these Papers has appeared in the Yearbook of the College of Organists, but is now first presented to a wider circle of readers. The first Paper, originally read in London, and repeated at Croydon and Brighton, by desire of the Council of the South-Eastern section of the National Society of Professional Musicians, is published in compliance with many requests. The three Papers, although prepared at different times and for different audiences, deal to some extent with cognate subjects; and I have not thought it necessary to eliminate a few repetitions of similar thoughts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and the Fine Arts: A Psychology of Aesthetic On the threshhold of our present subject the question may be asked What is the genetic unit Of Music? We seek first Of all to find and to formulate the embryonic germ out of which the entire musical organization unfolds; to use a biological comparison, we would fain reach down to the cell, the orig inal basic unit Of which the total body of Music is constituted. To be sure, Music is not a stationary thing which we can examine with the microscope; its essence is move ment, it is a process incessantly going on; when the motion stops, the Music stops; it has to be active, yea self - active in an external way, and hence it is the most adequate outer artistic manifestation of our mind's self-ac tivity and Of that of the universe too.
