Book Synopsis Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods by : Richard Roush
Download or read book Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods written by Richard Roush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce E. Tabashnik and Richard T. Roush Pesticide resistance is an increasingly urgent worldwide problem. Resistance to one or more pesticides has been documented in more than 440 species of insects and mites. Resistance in vectors of human dise8se, particularly malaria-transmit ting mosquitoes, is a serious threat to public health in many nations. Agricultural productivity is jeopardized because of widespread resistance in crop and livestock pests. Serious resistance problems are also evident in pests of the urban environ ment, most notably cockroaches. Better understanding of pesticide resistance is needed to devise techniques for managing resistance (Le. , slowing, preventing, or reversing development of resistance in pests and promoting it in beneficial natural enemies). At the same time, resistance is a dramatic example of evolution. Knowledge of resistance can thus provide fundamental insights into evolution, genetics, physiology, and ecology. Resistance management can help to reduce the harmful effects of pesticides by decreasing rates of pesticide use and prolonging the efficacy of environmentally safe pesticides. In response to resistance problems, the concentration or frequency of pesticide applications is often increased. Effective resistance management would reduce this type of increased pesticide use. Improved monitoring of resis tance would also decrease the number of ineffective pesticide applications that are made when a resistance problem exists but has not been diagnosed. Resistance often leads to replacement of one pesticide with another that is more expensive and less compatible with alternative controls.
Book Synopsis Diseases of Trees and Shrubs by : Wayne A. Sinclair
Download or read book Diseases of Trees and Shrubs written by Wayne A. Sinclair and published by Ithaca, N.Y. : Comstock Pub. Associates. This book was released on 1987 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of Trees and Shrubs is a comprehensive pictorial survey of the diseases of, as well as the environmental damage to, forest and shade trees and woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada. An authoritative reference, it is also a reliable and handy diagnostic tool that will simplify the identification of specific plant diseases by focusing on signs and symptoms that can be seen with the unaided eye or with a hand lens. This long-needed book gives readers complete, up-to-date information in an easily understood and convenient way. Each of the 247 color plates faces a page of explanatory text covering the biology and ecology (including host and geographic ranges) of the disease-causing agents (pathogens), a list of key references (there are more than 2,250), and, in some cases, black-and-white illustrations of pathogens. Selected information about biological and cultural control is provided. Scientific terms other than Latin names of pathogens are used only when necessary, and a glossary of terms and a comprehensive index are included. The color plates contain more than 1,700 illustrations of the diseases and injuries that some 350 biological agents and environmental factors cause to more than 250 species of plants. The book also serves as a guide to hundreds of other diseases related to those shown. The authors have used three levels of organization for this book. At the first level, diseases caused by biological agents are separated from those caused by environmental stimuli. At the second level, most diseases are grouped according to the plant part affected: leaves, twigs, limbs, roots, trunks, or the entire plant. At the third level, diseases are presented according to the taxonomic relationships among the pathogens. For this major project, the authors examined and photographed diseases and environmental damage in the field, visiting more than 50 states and Canadian provinces. Their book reflects the most important developments in fungal biology and taxonomy, plant bacteriology, virology, and environmentally induced stress in plants. It summarizes information about newly discovered diseases and provides up-to-date accounts of olds ones. Diseases of Trees and Shrubs can be profitable reading for anyone whose technical training does not extend beyond general biology, yet will also be informative to advanced students and plant pathologists. It will be welcomed by agricultural and horticultural advisers, plant inspectors, arborists, nursery professionals, landscapers, foresters, and urban planners. Wayne A. Sinclair is a Professor of Plant Pathology, Howard H. Lyon is Biological Photographer (retired), Department of Plant Pathology, and Warren T. Johnson is Professor of Entomology, all at Cornell University.
Book Synopsis Cultivating Edible Fungi by : P.J. Wuest
Download or read book Cultivating Edible Fungi written by P.J. Wuest and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Crop Science, 10: Cultivating Edible Fungi covers the proceedings of the International Symposium on Scientific and Technical Aspects of Cultivating Edible Fungi (IMS 86), held on July 15-17, 1986. The book focuses on the methodologies, processes, and technologies involved in the cultivation of edible fungi. The selection first offers information on antitumor activities of edible mushrooms by oral administration; variability of fluorescent Pseudomonas populations in composts and casing soils used for mushroom cultures; and influence of microorganisms and fungistasis on sporophore initiation in Agaricus brunnescens. The text then elaborates on the kratovirulence determinant of wood-decay fungi in transfer of mycelia to, and basidiocarp formation on, wooden raw substrates; spent compost as a carrier for bacterial inoculant production; and effects of growth regulator compounds on yield and size of Agaricus bisporus. The manuscript examines the effect of benomyl application and spawnmate supplementation on yield and size of selected genotypes of Pleurotus spp; changes in free amino acid content of the compost during growth and development of Agaricus bisporus; and basidiospore number variation in Agaricus. The book then takes a look at the integrated control of pests and diseases in mushroom cultivation; status of pests in the cultivated mushroom in India; and laboratory and cropping tests with cyromazine for mushroom sciarid control in mushroom compost. The selection is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in the cultivation of edible fungi.
Download or read book Mycelium Running written by Paul Stamets and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycelium Running is a manual for the mycological rescue of the planet. That’s right: growing more mushrooms may be the best thing we can do to save the environment, and in this groundbreaking text from mushroom expert Paul Stamets, you’ll find out how. The basic science goes like this: Microscopic cells called “mycelium”--the fruit of which are mushrooms--recycle carbon, nitrogen, and other essential elements as they break down plant and animal debris in the creation of rich new soil. What Stamets has discovered is that we can capitalize on mycelium’s digestive power and target it to decompose toxic wastes and pollutants (mycoremediation), catch and reduce silt from streambeds and pathogens from agricultural watersheds (mycofiltration), control insect populations (mycopesticides), and generally enhance the health of our forests and gardens (mycoforestry and myco-gardening). In this comprehensive guide, you’ll find chapters detailing each of these four exciting branches of what Stamets has coined “mycorestoration,” as well as chapters on the medicinal and nutritional properties of mushrooms, inoculation methods, log and stump culture, and species selection for various environmental purposes. Heavily referenced and beautifully illustrated, this book is destined to be a classic reference for bemushroomed generations to come.

Download or read book Fungal Diseases written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-10-08 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal diseases have contributed to death and disability in humans, triggered global wildlife extinctions and population declines, devastated agricultural crops, and altered forest ecosystem dynamics. Despite the extensive influence of fungi on health and economic well-being, the threats posed by emerging fungal pathogens to life on Earth are often underappreciated and poorly understood. On December 14 and 15, 2010, the IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop to explore the scientific and policy dimensions associated with the causes and consequences of emerging fungal diseases.
