Book excerpt: The Traprain Law treasure from east Lothian in south-east Scotland is the most dramatic hoard of late Roman Hacksilber yet found. The interpretation of these bent, broken and crushed silver fragments has long been debated. Were they loot broken up by uncultured barbarians, or some form of diplomatic gift? This volume places the phenomenon in the wider context of late Roman silver use, considers Britain either side of the frontier in the late fourth and fifth century, and then expands across the Roman world, analysing topics such as the role of late Roman silver vessels and the nature of donatives and diplomatic gifts to people inside and outside the empire. A series of authors debate the enigmatic and peculiarly British habit of clipping late Roman silver coins, and present new data. NB: The publisher appears to have confused the ISBN of this book with that of the book The Antiquarian Rediscovery of the Antonine Wall (9781908332004).

Book excerpt: A cache of over 100 gold, silver and other items, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland, was unearthed by a metal detectorist in 2014. A large fundraising campaign ensured that what has come to be known as 'the Galloway Hoard' was saved for the nation. Having lain undiscovered since the beginning of the 10th century, it now provides an extremely rare opportunity to research and reveal many lost aspects of the Viking Age. There is a chance to see the treasure at the National Museum of Scotland 18 February - 18 October 21. The exhibition will subsequently go on tour to Kirkcudbright, Aberdeen and Dundee. The accompanying book places the hoard in a wider historical context and showcases the conservation and research work currently being undertaken to understand the hoard and its secrets. Exhibition: National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, UK (29.05.-12.09.2021) / Kirkcudbright Galleries, UK (10.2021) / Aberdeen Archives, UK (2022).

Book excerpt: This first English translation of Napier's Rabdologia provides a clear and readable introduction to a group of physical calculating devices, which, long overshadowed by Napier's logarithms, have their own intrinsic interest and charm. "The tasks which fill'd beginners with dismayThis little book has banish'd clear away." John Napier had already discovered and published an epochmaking treatise on logarithms when in 1617 he turned to "rabdology" or rod-reckoning as yet another means by which to confront the problem of simplifying the huge calculations involved in multiplication, division, and the extraction of roots. This first English translation of Napier's Rabdologia provides a clear and readable introduction to a group of physical calculating devices, which, long overshadowed by Napier's logarithms, have their own intrinsic interest and charm. Book I describes the first device, a set of rods known as "Napier's Bones," which were inscribed with numbers forming multiplication tables and used in conjunction with pencil and paper. Book 11 presents a series of simple calculations that readers can solve by using the rods, and a series of tables of ratios useful for division. Napier then describes the second mechanical device for calculation, a forerunner of the modern calculator that he named promptuary or "place where things are stored ready for use." The third device, similar to a chessboard, allowed calculations to be performed by moving counters around the squares. Observing that the numbers had to be represented in what would now be called binary form, Napier provides instructions for changing from ordinary to binary numbers and back again, a method that worked equally well for multiplication and division and that had a particularly elegant symmetry when applied to the extraction of square roots.

It will challenge many of the misconceptions that still surround this turbulent period in European history. This book has eight specially commissioned essays on the Jacobites and includes a catalogue that showcases the rich wealth of objects in the exhibition.00Exhibition: National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh, UK (23.06.-12.11.2017).

Book excerpt: The breadth of National Museums Scotland's collections, together with the support of The Glenmorangie Company, puts National Museums in a unique position to reveal the role of silver in the development of the first kingdoms of Scotland. It was silver, not gold, which was the most important and powerful precious metal in Scotland for over six hundred years and, as well as showcasing beautiful objects, the book builds on the Glenmorangie Research Project to gives fresh insights into this formative period of Scottish history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the 21st century, museums of society seem to be undergoing a renaissance, with approaches generating a new museological scene. Basically, the new vision involves an interdisciplinary view of societies in which the concept of society or civilization itself creates a new discourse which aims to make the museums reflect on the major challenges faced by society today, such as multiculturalism, identities, and the complexity of the modern world.\nThe papers published in this book provide an introduction to some of the most prestigious museums of society in the world and an analysis of some of the major issues. The papers – written by the museum directors or managers – offer an excellent insight into the way the museums have developed and the challenges they face, whilst also providing some useful guidelines which might be taken into consideration in Catalonia.\n
