Book Synopsis Museum Criticum, Or, Cambridge Classical Researches by : Charles James Blomfield
Download or read book Museum Criticum, Or, Cambridge Classical Researches written by Charles James Blomfield and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short-lived (1813-26) classical journal was edited by James Henry Monk (1784-1856) and Charles James Blomfield (1786-1857), who were contemporaries at Trinity College, Cambridge. Both went on to ecclesiastical careers: Monk left his position as Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge to become Dean of Peterborough and subsequently Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, while Blomfeld, who already held the country living of Quarrington in Lincolnshire when the journal was founded, became Bishop of London. Encapsulating the dominant contemporary style of English classical scholarship - the close linguistic analysis of (primarily Greek) texts, as practised by Richard Porson (1759-1808), Monk's predecessor as Regius Professor - the Museum criticum became a rival to The Classical Journal (also reissued in this series) and was collected in two volumes in 1826. Illuminating the early development of academic journals, Volume 2 contains issues 5-8.

Download or read book Philology written by James Turner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prehistory of today's humanities, from ancient Greece to the early twentieth century Many today do not recognize the word, but "philology" was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only the study of Greek and Roman literature and the Bible but also all other studies of language and literature, as well as history, culture, art, and more. In short, philology was the queen of the human sciences. How did it become little more than an archaic word? In Philology, the first history of Western humanistic learning as a connected whole ever published in English, James Turner tells the fascinating, forgotten story of how the study of languages and texts led to the modern humanities and the modern university. The humanities today face a crisis of relevance, if not of meaning and purpose. Understanding their common origins—and what they still share—has never been more urgent.

Download or read book Oxford Classics written by and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford, the home of lost causes, the epitome of the world of medieval and renaissance learning in Britain, has always fascinated at a variety of levels: social, institutional, cultural. Its rival, Cambridge, was long dominated by mathematics, while Oxford's leading study was Classics. In this pioneering book, 16 leading authorities explore a variety of aspects of Oxford Classics in the last two hundred years: curriculum, teaching and learning, scholarly style, publishing, gender and social exclusion and the impact of German scholarship. Greats (Literae Humaniores) is the most celebrated classical course in the world: here its early days in the mid-19th century and its reform in the late 20th are discussed, in the latter case by those intimately involved with the reforms. An opening chapter sets the scene by comparing Oxford with Cambridge Classics, and several old favourites are revisited, including such familiar Oxford products as Liddell and Scott's "Greek-English Lexicon", the "Oxford Classical Texts", and Zimmern's "Greek Commonwealth". The book as a whole offers a pioneering, wide-ranging survey of Classics in Oxford.
