Book excerpt: Currently the outstanding problem in muscle contraction is determining the mechanism for the sliding of actin and myosin filaments. This volume contains papers based on lectures presented at the Seventeenth Annual Symposium on Some Mathematical Questions in Biology which was held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the AAAS. The six papers deal with overlapping areas of muscle physiology: cross-bridge dynamics (the mechanism currently receiving most attention), as well as distinctions between striated and cardiac muscles and the control of muscular contractions by action potentials. Focusing on both experimental techniques and theoretical underpinnings, the authors present the recent technological advances that provide an improved database for obtaining a better understanding of the biochemical mechanics and developing better mathematical models. In the first article Dr. Hugh E. Huxley reviews current studies of muscle systems which use X-ray diffraction and electron-microscopic analysis. Dr. Even Eisenberg describes how ATP hydrolysis drives muscle contraction via the action of myosin cross-bridges. The next two papers contain mathematical studies of muscle contraction. Dr. Michael Propp uses a thermodynamic formalism to predict the physiological properties of muscle. Drs. H. Michael Lacker and Charles S. Peskin develop a mathematical method for working backwards to determine uniquely microscopic properties of the cross-bridges. Drs. John W. Krueger and Katsuhiko Tsujioka use light diffraction observations to develop a quantitative understanding of cardiac function from properties of the myofibril and elements of the cross-bridge cycle. In the concluding paper, Dr. Robert S. Eisenberg reviews the current work on the electrical control mechanisms in excitation-contraction coupling which lead to muscle contraction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This update of the bestselling book on Applied Kinesiology introduces a diagnostic method that uses manual muscle testing to assess the body's structure, chemistry, and psyche Manual muscle testing is a standard medical diagnostic technique that utilizes full-strength contraction of the muscle tested. An Applied Kinesiology (AK) muscle test uses this method to not only assess the general integrity of the muscle but to also reveal structural, chemical, and mental weaknesses. To perform an AK muscle test, the practitioner applies light pressure that the client then resists. If the client cannot resist the pressure, the muscle ‘tests weak,’ indicating a structural problem or imbalance that needs to be resolved. Further applications include working with a muscle that tests strong ‘in the clear’ as a diagnostic tool to determine the effect of stimuli including touch, nutrients, medicines, allergens, emotions, poor posture, and stressful memories. Opening with a detailed description of the history and applications of Applied Kinesiology, this book covers the theory, procedure, and interpretation of the muscle test, including diagnosis and correction techniques for areas of weakness. Thirty-three muscle tests for different areas of the body are accompanied by instructive photographs with superimposed anatomical drawings that demonstrate the method and various treatment points. A useful appendix includes a glossary of anatomical terms and special vocabulary; a step-by-step plan for conducting a session; and a list of contacts and sources for Applied Kinesiology materials. Offering a new preface and additional techniques in the areas of manual medicine, orthomolecular medicine, and psychology, Applied Kinesiology, Revised Edition shares the author's discoveries as well as anecdotal observations to stimulate further research. Table of Contents 1. From Biomechanics to Applied Kinesiology 2. Scientific Principles of Applied Kinesiology 3. The Muscle Test 4. Pretests 5. Diagnosis and Correction Techniques 6. Muscle Tests 7. Book excerpt: This book draws upon the legacy of wisdom from ancient manuscripts, which can have a profound impact on your life. Mankind is oblivious to the extent of the devastation bestowed on the environment, and the fact that we are jeopardising the survival of future generations. There has never been so much violence, crime, corruption, murder and war in the history of mankind. In spite of our triumphs, in terms of scientific discoveries, we are deprived of physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The state of the outer world reflects the condition of our inner world. This book provides the reader with a renewed epiphany and insight into the extent to which we have strayed from our authentic self or true essence. Our main obstacles are ignorance, apathy and complacency. We are morally bankrupt and the solution to our problem is a soul-ution. Most people are unaware of the fact that we all have the ability to tap into the realm of Divine Universal Energy that surrounds us. We have the ability to live from a soul level; to connect with the sacred and to increase our awareness. The possibility of perfect health, serenity, and inner peace exists within the Spiritual Realm. The choice, to live in this Realm and in harmony with the Universal Laws, comes with certain responsibilities. This book offers guidelines, which will assist you to live with increased joy, purpose, passion and meaning. Applying these principles can make the difference between surviving and thriving.

This wasn't only the result of not understanding health, it was a consequence of not having an effective unified theory of health. EXPERIMENTS IN MUSCLE TESTING proposes such a theory. Structured around a teaching tool called THE HEALTH LADDER, this book takes us on a journey from the Desert of Uncertainty to Space Age Medicine. It makes a few stops along the way. We explore our internal organs, nutrition, metal toxicity, bad bacteria, food allergies, medical symptoms, autoimmune disorders and how to tailor a home-medical care program to children, seniors, pets and ourselves. We look at applications in longevity, travel, exercise, sleep, memory, cognition and the emotions. But most of all, EXPERIMENTS IN MUSCLE TESTING examines parasites as the root causes of medical conditions and by extension, our susceptibility to viruses. In simple, readable language, it presents us with a pathway to using advanced math and physics to generate frequencies that can eliminate parasites, collapse medical conditions and regain our health and our way of life. This book comes at a crucial time in world history. It has become apparent that health is no longer just a medical matter, but also a philosophical problem and a political issue. We are not fighting a battle for health alone. This is a battle for our God-given rights and freedoms. EXPERIMENTS IN MUSCLE TESTING focuses on a critical point: an awareness of the human bioelectric field. This is a fulcrum that will fundamentally influence the whole system. It is a lightning rod that will propagate Truth in the world. Chaotic times like these are the perfect setting for symmetry to emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide to the application of PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) in the treatment of patients with orthopedic problems and with neurologic dysfunctions. The approach presented here is based on the concepts set out by Dr. Herman Kabat and taught by Margaret (Maggie) Knott. The authors, experienced PNF teachers, show how they use the PNF method for effective evaluation, planning and treament, and thus provide the reader with a clear understanding of why, how and when PNF techniques are applied. The book`s special feature is the detailed photographic documentation of PNF patterns, mat and gait activities, and their functional application. This unique combination of photographs and concise text guides students learning PNF and stimulates therapists familiar with the method to review and improve their skills.
