Book excerpt: The new Murujuga National Park will be the first Aboriginal freehold land to be leased back to the State and jointly managed as a national park, with formal protection under the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984. It will be jointly managed by the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and the Department of Environment and Conservation under the guidance of the Murujuga Park Council. The park covers an area of 4,913 hectares of the Burrup Peninsula, near Dampier and hosts the largest concentration of ancient rock art in the world, dating back over 30,000 years. The Murujuga National Park Management Plan was prepared by the Murujuga Park Council, in consultation with the community. The creation of the new national park is a result of the 2003 native title settlement between the State and the traditional custodians of Murujuga. The management plan provides for joint management of the park's National Heritage listed cultural and natural values, provision of access and visitor facilities, and education and interpretation of the cultural values of the Burrup Peninsula.

The concept of community as a form of class-based solidarity has been hollowed out by postmodernism’s questioning of grand narratives and poststructuralism’s celebration of difference. Alongside the critique of a notion of community has been a critical re-signification of community, following the thinking of philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy who conceives of community not as common being but as being-in-common. The concept of community as being-in-common generates questions that have been taken up by feminist geographers, J.K. Gibson-Graham, in theorising a post-capitalist approach to community-based development. These questions and approaches guide the analyses in researched case studies of community performance practice. The book revises theoretical debates that have defined the field of community theatre and performance. It asks how the critical re-signification of community aligns with these debates and, at the same time, opens new modes of critical analysis of community theatre and performance practice.

Book excerpt: Australia has one of the largest inventories of rock art in the world with pictographs and petroglyphs found almost anywhere that has suitable rock surfaces – in rock shelters and caves, on boulders and rock platforms. First Nations people have been marking these places with figurative imagery, abstract designs, stencils and prints for tens of thousands of years, often engaging with earlier rock markings. The art reflects and expresses changing experiences within landscapes over time, spirituality, history, law and lore, as well as relationships between individuals and groups of people, plants, animals, land and Ancestral Beings that are said to have created the world, including some rock art. Since the late 1700s, people arriving in Australia have been fascinated with the rock art they encountered, with detailed studies commencing in the late 1800s. Since then, Australian rock art has been researched from various perspectives, including that of Traditional Owners, custodians and other community members.
