Book excerpt: It's August l946 and the historic Saratoga racetrack, closed for the past three years during WWII, has reopened for the traditional race meeting. The small city's seams are bursting with the pent up needs of thousands of gamblers, socialites and hangers-on who seek the excitement of the Sport of Kings and the mob-controlled casino-nightclubs where the likes of Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Sophie Tucker entertain. The discovery of a woman's mutilated corpse at a lake near the casinos has local political boss Doc Fazzone and mob boss Sammy Cohen worried that the press will imply it's a mob hit. Reporter Jack Jenkins, assisted by coed intern Beverly Michaels, digs into the murder and finds that young Jeremy Bell, who discovered the body, may hold the key to unraveling the crime. City detective Tom Connor must contend with Jack and keep police commissioner Torrey off his back during an election year where Torrey faces a challenge from local attorney and war hero, Bobby Deliberto. Meanwhile, a reclusive nurse, Sonia Kosik, knows more than she's telling about the victim. Someone in the organization is ripping off the take from the numbers' racket and Doc must find him before mob boss Sammy Cohen does. Doc's enforcer, Harry Schmidt, looks for answers in a book hidden near the racetrack by Jimmy O'Connor, Doc's bookkeeper and brother-in-law. The disparate parties come together and confront each other near the isolated lake where the murdered woman's body was first discovered.

Book Synopsis Saratoga Mantrap and Classification by : Dexter St. Clare
Download or read book Saratoga Mantrap and Classification written by Dexter St. Clare and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic mystery-crime double novels. The first novel is "Saratoga Mantrap" by Dexter St. Claire. It didn't take Keene Madden long to discover that in colorful Saratoga it was foolish to bet on a horse, and fatal to bet on a woman--especially when that woman was Cynthia Larmin, who had the body of a thoroughbred and the morals of a million loose dollars. Madden knew someone was fixing races, that someone had died rudely, and worse, that he was next on the killer's list. But when Madden actually got fingered for one of the murders, it gave him an "incentive" to bring the killer to justice. However, standing in his way was a seemingly endless maze of mis-turns and half-clues, all intermixed with a long list of low-life characters. Who would have thought lust, death, and playing the ponies would go hand and hand? The second novel is a true classic of nail-biting suspense, "Classification: Homicide" by Jonathan Craig. Her name was Barbara Lawson, a gorgeous young model with lots of friends and a great life in front of her. Then one morning the police found her dead body on an apartment building rooftop--the victim of a brutal stabbing. Veteran detective Steve Manning was called in to examine the crime scene and turn up a suspect or two--of which there were plenty. Could the killer have been beautiful Anne Tyner, a fellow model and Barbara Lawson's "best friend?" Or there was Gus Brokaw, the aloof superintendent of the apartment building who was very aware of Lawson's physical beauty and personal charm. Then there was Edward Henderson, the man who found the body. He claimed he liked going up on the rooftop "just for the view." But most of all there was Benny Thomas, who had a rap sheet a mile long and seemed perfect for the part of a street-wise assassin. Manning had to eyeball these suspects under a magnifying glass and sift through endless clues in an effort to bring a ruthless killer to justice.

Download or read book Saratoga Lost written by Robert Joki and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-famous as the Queen of Spas, Saratoga Springs entered a golden age in the Victorian years and the world flocked to its doorstep every summer. The rich and famous rubbed elbows with a growing post-Civil War middle class popularizing a new concept, the summer vacation. They came ostensibly to take the waters at the bubbling mineral springs, but what they really came for was to see and be seen on the grand piazzas of the magnificent, colossal hotels that lined Saratoga's Broadway, and to share in the limelight of glittering balls and fabulous parties. The grace and opulence of America's Victorian era faded with the dawn of the twentieth century, and almost all of the buildings and views in this book have long since disappeared in clouds of dust from the wrecker's ball or in spectacular cataclysmic infernos, but in Saratoga Lost, Robert Joki takes the reader on a guided tour of that grand era with hundreds of historic photographs from the author's extraordinary private collection, complemented, by period artwork.

In the summer of 1777 (twelve months after the Declaration of Independence) the British launched an invasion from Canada under General John Burgoyne. It was the campaign that was supposed to the rebellion, but it resulted in a series of battles that changed America's history and that of the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Devil in the White City comes a spell-binding tale of madness and murder in a nineteenth century American dynasty On June 3, 1873, a portly, fashionably dressed, middle-aged man calls the Sturtevant House and asks to see the tenant on the second floor. The bellman goes up and presents the visitor's card to the guest in room 267, returns promptly, and escorts the visitor upstairs. Before the bellman even reaches the lobby, four shots are fired in rapid succession. Eighteen-year-old Frank Walworth descends the staircase and approaches the hotel clerk. He calmly inquires the location of the nearest police precinct and adds, "I have killed my father in my room, and I am going to surrender myself to the police." So begins the fall of the Walworths, a Saratoga family that rose to prominence as part of the splendor of New York's aristocracy. In a single generation that appearance of stability and firm moral direction would be altered beyond recognition, replaced by the greed, corruption, and madness that had been festering in the family for decades.
