Book excerpt: ******* A TIMES 'BOOK OF THE YEAR' ******* ***Shortlisted for the CWA Dagger for non-fiction*** 'A magnificent, meticulous and startling re-examination of a crime that haunts the world's imagination' Geoffrey Wansell, author of An Evil Love: The Life of Frederick West 'Eatwell writes brilliantly . . . [she] has finally offered [Elizabeth] Short a type of belated justice. Her book reads like a thriller' Sunday Times 'A compelling read, in both style and substance . . . A must-read for anyone with an interest in the Black Dahlia - or indeed any fan of the true-crime genre' Rod Reynolds, author of The Dark Inside 'Compulsively readable, impeccably researched and heart-rending at times . . . Superb' Sarah Lotz, author of The Three and The White Road ************* On 15th January 1947, the naked, dismembered body of a black-haired beauty, Elizabeth Short, was discovered lying next to a pavement in a Hollywood suburb. She was quickly nicknamed The Black Dahlia. The homicide inquiry that followed consumed Los Angeles for years and the authorities blew millions of dollars of resources on an investigation that threw up dozens of suspects. But it never was solved. Until now. In this ground-breaking book, Piu Eatwell reveals compelling forensic and eye witness evidence for the first time, which finally points to the identity of the murderer. The case was immortalised in James Ellroy's famous novel based on the case, in Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon and Brian de Palma's movie The Black Dahlia. This is a dark tale of sex, manipulation, obsession, psychopathy and one of the biggest police cover ups in history.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Selection One of Bustle's "Best True Crime Books of the Year" “[A] juicy page turner . . . capturing both the allure and the perils of the dream factory that promised riches and fame.”—New York Times Book Review The gruesome 1947 murder of hopeful starlet Elizabeth Short holds a permanent place in American lore as one of our most inscrutable true-crime mysteries. In a groundbreaking feat of detection hailed as “extensive” and “convincing” (Bustle), skilled legal sleuth Piu Eatwell cracks the case after seventy years, rescuing Short from tabloid fodder to reveal the woman behind the headlines. Drawing on recently unredacted FBI and LAPD files and exclusive interviews, Black Dahlia, Red Rose is a gripping panorama of noir-tinged 1940s Hollywood and a definitive account of one of the biggest unsolved murders of American legal history.

Book excerpt: A lone kayaker found her, lying as if asleep on the steep, muddy bank of Kholo Creek, where it adjoins the Brisbane River; her body and the river swollen from the torrential Queensland April rains. This is the story of the trial, interwoven with the forensic numerological profile of the three people involved in the love triangle: Allison, former local beauty queen and mother of three young girls, her husband Gerard, (who was also her murderer), and his lover Toni McHugh. This real life crime was committed in Brisbane, Australia in 2012. In July, 2014, Gerard Robert Baden-Clay, great-grandson of Scouting pioneer Lord Robert Baden-Powell, was given a life sentence of 25 years with the non-parole period set at 15 years. He is currently serving out that sentence at the Wolston Park Correctional Centre at Wacol, just kilometres away from where the murder was committed at Brookfield and Allison's body dumped. It is also only kilometres away from the town of Redbank, where his lovely bride, a country girl, grew up.

Book excerpt: If Richard III had not charged to his death at Bosworth, how different might the history of Britain have been? Beginning in 1453 and ending in 1487, The Red Rose and the White provides a gripping overview of the bitter dynastic struggle for supremacy that raged between the houses of York and Lancaster for thirty years, culminating in the dramatic events on Bosworth Field in 1485. As well as offering a comprehensive account of the campaigns, battles and sieges of the conflict, the book also assesses the commanders and men involved and considers the weapons and tactics employed. Photographs, maps and portraits of the principal characters help to bring the period to life, whilst the fast-paced narrative conveys a sense of what it was actually like to fight in battles such as Towton or Tewkesbury the effect of the arrow storm and the grim realities of hand-to-hand combat with edged and bladed weapons. Skilfully weaving in political and social events to place the conflict in its context, The Red Rose and the White is a fascinating exploration of the turbulent period that would change the course of British history forever.

Book excerpt: In this suspenseful mystery by Agatha Award-winning author Edith Maxwell, a startling murder exposes dark dealings in a quiet New England town . . . When a talented student asks her to endorse his controversial thesis on race and language, linguistics professor Lauren Rousseau cautiously agrees to take up the cause—so long as no one at their small New England college finds out about the romantic bonds they’ve formed. But just days later she discovers the student’s been murdered following an acrimonious meeting with the department chair, and Lauren’s concerns go from academic to criminal as she’s thrust into a search for the killer. A determined Quaker with an ear for accents, Lauren won’t be deterred by the escalating danger surrounding her, and she’s soon confronted with alarming small-town bigotry, academic blackmail, and a trail of clues that all lead to a community center for underserved youth. And when her investigation reveals a web of shadowy connections deeply entrenched in her small community, she uncovers a motive and a murderer far more menacing than she had ever imagined . . . This book was originally published under the name Tace Baker. Praise for Speaking of Murder: “Entertaining, innovative and suspenseful . . . just the ticket for those relishing a contemporary puzzler.” —Julia Spencer-Fleming, New York Times bestselling author of Hid from Our Eyes: A Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mystery “Clever, compelling and terrifically smart, [Maxwell’s] intelligent writing—and wryly wonderful sleuth—gives a hip, contemporary twist to this traditional mystery.” —Hank Phillippi Ryan, Agatha-, Anthony-, and Macavity-winning author of The Murder List “[Maxwell] combines convincing, diverse characters, a vividly described setting, and a plot that picks up speed until it reaches a surprisingly intense confrontation.” —Sheila Connolly, New York Times bestselling author of the Orchard Mysteries, the Museum Mysteries, and the County Cork Mysteries

Book excerpt: It was 1883 and the little town of Brickport where Dr. Moorehead had been practicing medicine for many years started getting complaints from his patients. The doctor had a little alcohol problem that wouldn't go away, and it was showing by a bad diagnosis that didn't go unnoticed by his patients, which ultimately led to his practice being suspended indefinitely. Dr. Moorehead lost it and drowned his sorrows in alcohol, and fast women, which brought the world that he so loved to an end when his wife took their three children and walked out on him. No practice and no family all Dr. Moorehead had left was a bottle of whiskey, a doctor's bag, a carriage he rode into work, and a castle in ruins. Since Dr. Moorehead had no female companionship his hatred towards women grew as the days got lonelier and lonelier. Every time the doctor's eyes gazed upon a beautiful woman it would send him in a barely containable rage, and all he thought of was getting his hands around her soft pretty neck, and choking the life out of her, but he knew if he acted upon it in broad daylight he would be caught and hung for it. So, he had to think of a way that would leave the town guessing who did it. The doctor paced back and forth in his study brainstorming how he would get away with murder. Then he said, "I've got it!" I'll go out after midnight when everyone is asleep and the fog is thick, then no one will be able to identify the killer. Besides there's always a lady of the night still walking the streets looking to make a fast buck before the night is over." The doctor sharpened his instruments put on his black trench coat, and top hat, and set out into the night on what would become his carriage of death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.
