Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.
Book Synopsis Violence and Nihilism by : Luís Aguiar de Sousa
Download or read book Violence and Nihilism written by Luís Aguiar de Sousa and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nihilism seems to be per definition linked to violence. Indeed, if the nihilist is a person who acknowledges no moral or religious authority, then what does stop him from committing any kind of crime? Dostoevsky precisely called attention to this danger: if there is no God and no immortality of the soul, then everything is permitted, even anthropophagy. Nietzsche, too, emphasised, although in different terms, the consequences deriving from the death of God and the collapse of Judeo-Christian morality. This context shaped the way in which philosophers, writers and artists thought about violence, in its different manifestations, during the 20th century. The goal of this interdisciplinary volume is to explore the various modern and contemporary configurations of the link between violence and nihilism as understood by philosophers and artists (in both literature and film).

Americans keep the most technologically advanced toys of any country in the world. The most deadly killers in the world this side of water, and all it takes is a spark. A few wires, a battery (usually provided) and you're set. The Quiet Man's foray into terrorism required more than a few wires. He required a targeted approach. Cruise missiles up the tailpipe. A couple of transistors and switches. The car alarm comes on, the device is armed. The car alarm switches off...five...four...three...two... And that's that. Ten cars. Ten devices. There were the usual calls for rounding up all Arabs and 'detaining' them for 'questioning.' Long-term questioning behind barbed wire. Don't panic, said the police. Hell, let 'em panic, said everyone else. Maybe they'll turn their damn alarms off. They did. Sunday morning the Quiet Man slept in peace. But not because it was quiet. The lack of car alarms didn't stop the bottles and the screams. He slept because he'd done something. The Quiet Man slept and dreamt of power.

Download or read book Air written by Peter Adey and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outside of yoga class, we don’t pay too much attention to the air we take in every day. Long one of the essential elements to life on earth—from the atmospheric composition that gave life to the coal-forming forests some three hundred million years ago to the air that fuels our most important technologies today—we think little of its incredible properties. In this innovative cultural and scientific history, Peter Adey takes stock of the great ocean of air that surrounds us, exploring our attempts to understand, engineer, make sense of, and find meaning in it. Adey examines how humans have managed and manipulated air as a natural resource and, in doing so, have been taken to the limits of survival, brought to high-altitude mountain peaks, subterranean worlds, and the troughs of new moral depths. Going beyond how vital air has been to our philosophical, scientific, and technological pursuits, he also reveals the way that the artistic and literary imagination has been lifted through air and how, in air, cultures have learned to express and inspire each other. Combining established figures such as Joseph Priestley, John Scott Haldane, and Marie Curie with unlikely individuals from painting, literature, and poetry, this richly illustrated book unlocks new perspectives into the science and culture of this pervasive but unnoticed substance.
Book Synopsis The Passion of Ingmar Bergman by : Frank Gado
Download or read book The Passion of Ingmar Bergman written by Frank Gado and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as one of the greatest filmmakers of this or any other time, Bergman has with few exceptions written his own screenplays--an uncommon practice in the film industry--and for this practice critics refer to him as a "literary" filmmaker: In this work, Gado examines virtually the entire range of Bergman's literary output. While treating the matter of the visual presentation of Bergman's films, Gado concentrates on story and narrative and their relationship to Bergman's personal history. Gado concludes that whatever the outward appearance of Bergman's works, they contain an elementary psychic fantasy that links them all, revealing an artist who hoped to be a dramatist, "the new Strindberg," and who saw the camera as an extension of his pen.
