Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1514 a respected London Merchant, Richard Hunne, was found hanging in Old St Paul’s Cathedral. Whether it was murder or suicide was hotly debated but popular opinion, endorsed more recently by many historians, pointed to foul play by church officials. Around this central mystery, Dale has woven a story of murder, church politics and forbidden texts in turbulent pre-Reformation London. Hunne’s widow, Anne, takes centre stage in this narrative as she attempts to solve and avenge the death of her husband. Her search for the truth will take her to Germany and Martin Luther’s revolt against the authority of the church, and up against powerful figures such as the English Lord Chancellor, Thomas More. She becomes involved in the new illicit trade of printing religious texts, and will suffer both imprisonment and the danger of execution. She is helped by her lover, a German Hansa merchant, and through her adventures she will move closer to, and finally solve, the brutal killing of her husband - a crime that has baffled historians ever since the body was first found hanging in St Paul’s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 27, 1839, the battered body of a middle-aged Irishman was found by some Dakota Indian boys. The corpse washed up along the Mississippi River shore, about seven miles downstream from Fort Snelling near the ancient Indian landmark the non-Indians called Carver's Cave. It was the body of Sgt. John Hays, a popular former soldier, who, prior to his disappearance twenty-one days earlier, had been sharing a log shanty a few miles upriver from the cave with his friend and business partner, Edward Phelan (or Phalen). Before the year was over, Phelan was arrested and charged with the murder of his friend. This is the first book to focus on this historic murder and the first thorough biography of Phelan, a notorious pioneer intimately involved in the making of St. Paul and founding of Minnesota. Was he guilty? All investigative reports and records of Phelan's trial were mysteriously lost and no newspapers covered the story. However, in 1994, St. Paul historian Gary Brueggemann made an amazing discovery in the Minnesota Historical Society archives: hidden in the papers of Joseph R. Brown was Brown's original Justice of the Peace casebook which included his handwritten transcription of the Hay's murder hearing. Using this record, other primary sources, and drawing from decades of studying Minnesota and St. Paul history, the author theorizes a logical solution to Minnesota's oldest unsolved murder. Book excerpt: May 1941. One of the senior choristers of St Paul's Cathedral choir, Dr Edwin Roberts, is found beaten to death in the crypt of the Cathedral. Coburg and Lampson are called in to investigate, and when they get there, Coburg is pleasantly surprised to be greeted there by Arthur Waterson, now sporting a dog collar, someone he was at Eton with many years before. Waterson believes that there may be a connection between the very precious books that are houses in the Crypt and Dr Roberts' work at Bletchley Park. As Coburg and Lampson work to solve a very puzzling case, it becomes clear that there is more to the brutal murder than they first suspected .

Book excerpt: A fledgling community in the midst of stunning natural scenes, the St. Paul of yesteryear had a well-earned reputation for beauty and danger. Whiskey made the river city a byword for peril. Men brawled over small offenses and killed one another with near impunity. As crime flourished beyond the power of police control, vigilantes patrolled the streets. Irresponsible speculation and white-collar crime wrecked the local economy, devastating families and driving thousands out of town. The remaining St. Paulites rebuilt their community and economy, stimulating immigration, but more people meant more crime. In the 1870s, vice and violence spiraled into the Bloody Fall of '74, and St. Paul regained its reputation as a "dead tough" town. Historian Ron de Beaulieu reveals the past travails of life in this turbulent city.

Book excerpt: In another historical adventure from Susanna Gregory, Chaloner the spy investigates a murder in a plague-ravaged 17th century London The plague raging through London in 1665 has emptied the city. The only people left are those too poor to flee, or those who selflessly struggle to control the contagion and safeguard the capital's future. Amongst them, though, are those prepared to risk their health for money - those who sell dubious 'cures' and hawk food at wildly inflated prices. Also amongst them are those who hold in their hands the future of the city's most iconic building - St Paul's Cathedral. The handsome edifice is crumbling from decades of neglect and indecision, giving the current custodians a stark choice - repair or demolish. Both sides have fanatical adherents who have been fighting each other since the Civil Wars. Large sums of money have disappeared, major players have mysteriously vanished, and then a unidentified skeleton is discovered in another man's grave. A reluctant Chaloner returns to London to investigate, only to discover that someone is determined to thwart him by any means - by bullet, poison or bludgeon - and he fears he has very little time to identify the culprits before he becomes yet another victim in the battle for the Cathedral's future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most commentaries on Acts are written by Western scholars for a Western audience. This book comes out of more than forty years of teaching in the Majority World. It is aimed at the new breed of emerging missionaries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The apostles in Acts faced a hostile world. Yet in that context, the Holy Spirit gave them incredible courage. The scenes of Peter, Stephen, and Paul facing angry mobs and the fury of the Jewish Sanhedrin are being played out in India, China, and Eritrea today. Acts teaches us how to have a "courageous witness in a hostile world." Further, this work addresses the powerful forces that assault the worldwide church--particularly the racism that splits the church all over the world. Acts: Courageous Witness in a Hostile World will thrill you as you see how God's Spirit overcomes every obstacle and keeps the church on track, even when we think all is lost. Read this book for yourself and become courageous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a young man, I loved traditional English murder mysteries, the ones in which all the suspects were assembled at the end of the book and some wily detective explained the reasoning and clues that led to the identity of the murderer. It was so exciting to watch the detective eliminate suspects and discard certain clues while embracing the clues, which led to the actual murderer. I would then reread the sections involving the murderer and see how the author had set up the clues that most times had eluded me. I had so much fun! I read all those mysteries and unfortunately have not found any who use that dramatic format, so I decided to write one myself. In Murder in St. Charles, the patriarch of a large, dysfunctional family is murdered on Christmas night in front of his adult children, sister-in-law, her boyfriend, and three members of his staff. Max Marten is a successful lawyer whose egocentric personality has made him many enemies—some in the legal community, others in his own family. The path to finding Max Marten’s murderer is psychologically complex and somewhat overwhelming for the small-town police force tasked with solving the crime until criminal psychologist Ray Lynn Park is brought in to consult on the case. It is Ray Lynn who solves the case through the use of psychology, intuition, karma, and a little bit of luck. And most importantly, she uses the little cells in her brain in the best tradition of detectives that went before her. Enjoy the book. I loved writing it.

Constituted as man is, he will fight no battle simply from sentiment or feeling. He must believe that there is something worth fighting for. In every one of us, the flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary, the one to the other. This world was intended to be a battleground. "I came not to send peace, but a sword." Depressing and discouraging words unless there be something beyond! Everything on earth is lent us. Nothing really becomes ours till we have done battle for it. The earth and the heavens are full of knowledge, but we have to learn it. The only way in which we can make it our own is to struggle with it. Like Jacob of old, when he met the angel and had to wrestle for the blessing, so it is with ourselves. Everything external has to become internal. The fact without has to become the thought and feeling within before it is ours. Before this earth could be what it is, it had to be melted by fire, drenched by rains, swathed in fogs impenetrable by light. All this agony had to be endured. Before that bright spring morning which wakes up every bird, and excites every fragrance, and unfolds every leaf, could come or be possible, all that scorching fire, and drenching rain, and impenetrable fog had to be. Before you and your friends could meet around the parlor fire, and enjoy each other's society, the Creator had to make the coal whose red warmth casts its glow on your visage. Create it? What does that word mean? How much? Begin at the beginning and trace the geologic formation of our common coal from the time it was vapor till through endless ages it became forest, died into its unvitalized condition, and became hard as stone; then you will know what the word...
