There aren’t any letters for him at the front desk or calls at reception. Bellboys, waiters, and bartenders all ignore him. When he reaches out to strangers, they look away. He’s alone in the world—and worse, he’s gripped by an icy terror that follows him everywhere. One night, it catches up to him. Carson, unloved and unknown, is found dead with a bullet between his eyes. In the dead man’s pocket, the police find a newspaper clipping about Mike Shayne, Miami’s toughest private investigator. The local chief is convinced Shayne was connected to the murder, and he will do whatever is necessary to put the detective behind bars. Shayne can handle the cops—it’s Carson’s widow that he needs to worry about. Murder and the Wanton Bride is the 30th book in the Mike Shayne Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: From the time of the gold rush to the election of the first woman to the U.S. Congress, Wanton West brings to life the women of the West's wildest region: Montana, famous for its lawlessness, boomtowns, and America's largest red-light districts. Prostitutes and entrepreneurs--like Chicago Joe, Madame Mustache, and Highkicker—flocked to Montana to make their own money, gamble, drink, and raise hell just like men. Moralists wrote them off as “soiled doves,” yet a surprising number prospered, flaunting their freedom and banking ten times more than their “respectable” sisters. A lively read providing new insights into women's struggle for equality, Wanton West is a refreshingly objective exploration of a freewheeling society and a re-creation of an unforgettable era in history.

But shock soon turns to horror when Inspector Thomas Pitt discovers three more bodies with the same gruesome “calling card”: a stab wound in the back and a rather inexpertly executed mutilation. As Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, race against time to find the killer, a treacherous mystery unfolds. And no one, not the lowest brand of ruffian or the most established aristocrat, will escape unscathed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study looks at the laws concerning the murder of slaves by their masters and at how these laws were implemented. Andrew T. Fede cites a wide range of cases--across time, place, and circumstance--to illuminate legal, judicial, and other complexities surrounding this regrettably common occurrence. These laws had evolved to limit in different ways the masters' rights to severely punish and even kill their slaves while protecting valuable enslaved people, understood as "property," from wanton destruction by hirers, overseers, and poor whites who did not own slaves. To explore the conflicts of masters' rights with state and colonial laws, Fede shows how slave homicide law evolved and was enforced not only in the United States but also in ancient Roman, Visigoth, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and British jurisdictions. His comparative approach reveals how legal reforms regarding slave homicide in antebellum times, like past reforms dictated by emperors and kings, were the products of changing perceptions of the interests of the public; of the individual slave owners; and of the slave owners' families, heirs, and creditors. Although some slave murders came to be regarded as capital offenses, the laws con-sistently reinforced the second-class status of slaves. This influence, Fede concludes, flowed over into the application of law to free African Americans and would even make itself felt in the legal attitudes that underlay the Jim Crow era.

Book excerpt: Inside: THE BALLAD OF SUE LOGUE by Hal Gibson Sue Logue's involvement in the revenge murder of Davis Timmerman after he killed her husband, Wallace, resulted in her being executed along with her brother-in-law, George, and hit-man Clarence Bagwell. Her nephew, Joe Frank, Junior, who aided Bagwell in the murder, served a life sentence. Sue's insatiable appetite for life included a purported love affair with young Edgefield SC teacher and politician Strom Thurmond, whom she believed would save her. "Ms. Flowers spins a great tale of juicy Southern hospitality, bodacious family feuds, insidious betrayals, and gunslinging, vigilante justice that makes the OK Corral dust-up look like a Sunday afternoon picnic in the park." -Carol Jose, co-author of Evil Web: A True Story of Cult Abuse and Courage "In Wanton Woman Anna Flowers is at the top of her game in the true crime genre. This case history of murder, which made headlines in the 1940s, has it all, human intrigue, wanton sex, and an ending that will hit the reader with the impact of a bullet. The attention to historical detail, coupled with the skill to tell a compelling, fast-paced story, make Flowers' account of murder and mayhem read like a novel." -Maynard Allington, author of critically acclaimed The Court of Blue Shadows

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many evangelical Christians have faith in the Bible, but struggle with confidence in its ethical principles. Some believe that biblical morals are not as effective as secular ideologies in promoting human well-being and societal progress. Others feel that using the Bible as a basis for moral arguments lacks persuasive power in public discussions. In Faithful Reason: Natural Law Ethics for God’s Glory and Our Good, Andrew T. Walker argues that developing a comprehensive Christian ethic is not simply a matter of appealing to biblical authority, but also of understanding the way that God has ordered creation and our place within it. In this work, he provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to natural law ethics from an evangelical perspective. In the first section of Faithful Reason, Walker develops a robust framework of natural law ethics, guided by biblical and theological evidence. In the second section, this framework is applied to various contemporary ethical issues within dignity ethics, embodied ethics, personal ethics, social ethics, and political ethics. Through a natural law framework, readers are empowered to reason through the particulars of any situation and develop a godly ethical response.

Book excerpt: The witness dialed 911 but did not complete the call when he realized that the police could trace the call to him so he did what the apathetic do, he withdrew. Michael told the 911 operator, "I lost my wife." The operator replied, "A missing person report cannot be filed for at least twenty-four hours." The detectives knew it was murder; it could not have been an animal attack. "You were the best friend, lover and wife a man could ever hope for. I will cherish you as the best part of my life. I swear I will murder the person who murdered you." "This is a win-win situation for you. Your crown will be decency, honesty, integrity and honor." "Many things tell me I shouldn't do this." She took the sample and hurried out of the prison. "What I suspected, negative." "This is outrageous, she had no authority to contact my client." The envelope contained his address and phone number for landscaping service. "How do you find?" "Not guilty." "What did you just say?"
