As Director of Rooms at the luxurious and ultra-modern Universe Hotel in New York, he radiates dignified professionalism and high-end hospitality. When Trevor inadvertently escorts VIP guest Brenda Rathberger–the cantankerous executive director of the Victims of Impaired Drivers conference–past the dead body of the hotel's owner, Trevor's perfect world implodes. Police believe a hotel executive may be responsible and their suggestion that alcohol may have been involved encourages Brenda to use the controversy to grandstand her cause. She joins forces with celebrated TV anchor Honica Winters, who exposes the sordid details on national television. With his dear coworkers under suspicion and his treasured guests turning on him, it's all Trevor can do to protect everyone, particularly his sweet and lovely duty manager, Nancy. In the resulting clash among pampered guests, harried employees, and militant protesters, Trevor struggles to find the killer and to preserve the dignity of the Universe.

It’s Sleepless in Seattle meets Station Eleven.” —The A.V. Club Carson is on the East Coast when the electrical grid goes down. Desperate to find Beatrix, a woman on the West Coast who holds his heart, he sets off along a cross-country railroad line, where he encounters lost souls, clever opportunists, and those seeking salvation. Meanwhile, Beatrix and her neighbors begin to construct a cooperative community, working to turn the end of the world into the possibility of a bright beginning. Without modern means of communication, will Beatrix and Carson be able to find their way to each other? The answer may lie with one fifteen-year-old girl, whose actions could ultimately decide the fate of the lovers. The Lightest Object in the Universe is a moving story about adaptation and the power of community, imagining a world where our best traits, born of necessity, can begin to emerge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did certain domestic murders fire the Victorian imagination? In her analysis of literary and cultural representations of this phenomenon across genres, Bridget Walsh traces how the perception of the domestic murderer changed across the nineteenth century and suggests ways in which the public appetite for such crimes was representative of wider social concerns. She argues that the portrayal of domestic murder did not signal a consensus of opinion regarding the domestic space, but rather reflected significant discontent with the cultural and social codes of behaviour circulating in society, particularly around issues of gender and class. Examining novels, trial transcripts, medico-legal documents, broadsides, criminal and scientific writing, illustration and, notably, Victorian melodrama, Walsh focuses on the relationship between the domestic sphere, so central to Victorian values, and the desecration of that space by the act of murder. Her book encompasses the gendered representation of domestic murder for both men and women as it tackles crucial questions related to Victorian ideas of nationhood, national health, political and social inequality, newspaper coverage of murder, unstable and contested models of masculinity and the ambivalent portrayal of the female domestic murderer at the fin de siècle.

When her body is discovered near Antelope Creek the next morning, the town is thrown into an uproar, and everyone wants answers to the same question: Who killed Sue Milan? As Marlows investigation leads him to surmise that something was amiss between Sue and another member of the gathering, the police suddenly crack the case. But lingering doubts about the true killer remain in Marlows psyche, and he soon realizes that it is up to him to solve one of the most important crimes in the history of Nebraskabefore a child molester can once again impose his wrath on an innocent victim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most accounts of the Holocaust focus on trainloads of prisoners speeding toward Auschwitz, with its chimneys belching smoke and flames, in the summer of 1944. This book provides a hitherto untold chapter of the Holocaust by exploring a prequel to the gas chambers: the face-to-face mass murder of Jews in Galicia by bullets. The summer of 1941 ushered in a chain of events that had no precedent in the rapidly unfolding history of World War II and the Holocaust. In six weeks, more than twenty thousand Hungarian Jews were forcefully deported to Galicia and summarily executed. In exploring the fate of these Hungarian Jews and their local coreligionists, A Summer of Mass Murder transcends conventional history by introducing a multitude of layers of politics, culture, and, above all, psychology—for both the victims and the executioners. The narrative presents an uncharted territory in Holocaust scholarship with extensive archival research, interviews, and corresponding literature across countries and languages, incorporating many previously unexplored documents and testimonies. Eisen reflects upon the voices of the victims, the images of the perpetrators, whose motivation for murder remains inexplicable. In addition, the author incorporates the long-forgotten testimonies of bystander contemporaries, who unwittingly became part of the unfolding nightmare and recorded the horror in simple words. This book also serves as a personal journey of discovery. Among the twenty thousand people killed was the tale of two brothers, the author’s uncles. In retracing their final fate and how they were swept up in the looming genocide, A Summer of Mass Murder also gives voice to their story.
