Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the muon charge asymmetry from W boson decays using 0.3 fb−1 of data collected at (square root)s = 1.96 GeV between 2002 and 2004 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} Collider. We compare our findings with expectations from next-to-leading-order calculations performed using the CTEQ6.1M and MRST04 NLO parton distribution functions. Our findings can be used to constrain future parton distribution function fits.

Book excerpt: A measurement is described of the charge asymmetry in the pseudorapidity distribution of muons from W boson decay in proton- antiproton collisions at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector. We also report on a search for extra gauge bosons in the electron decay channel. Mass limits of M{sub W}(prime)> 600 GeV and M{sub Z}(prime)> 440 GeV are obtained at 95% confidence level under the assumption of standard model couplings.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider is a new circular particle accelerator designed to collide bunches of protons at a beam energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. One of the two large general-purpose detectors is the Compact Muon Solenoid. This paper will provide a measurement of the W boson cross section and charge asymmetry in the decay channel W to muon + neutrino over the entire 2010 (35.9 inverse picobarn) dataset, as a means of testing detector performance and of constraining Parton Distribution Functions, as well as testing theoretical predictions in the new energy regime. The cross section and charge asymmetry were measured by first imposing a series of cuts, then using sideband subtraction to remove background process contributions. Systematic and statistical uncertainties were also calculated. The cross section was found to be consistent with theoretical predictions, and the overall charge asymmetry was also found to be consistent with theoretical predictions.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry in inclusive pp [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] W + X production at the center of mass energy of s = 7 TeV of colliding protons. The data sample was collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb[-]1 . The measurement was performed in 11 bins of the muon pseudorapidity within [eta] 2.4 range and for two thresholds on its transverse momentum: pT 25 GeV and pT> 35 GeV. Precise measurement of the muon charge asymmetry provides an important test for the Standard Model physics. Thanks to the large data sample, containing more than 20 million W [RIGHTWARDS ARROW] [MICRO SIGN][nu] events, statistical precision is greatly improved compared with the previous lepton charge asymmetry results at the LHC. Total absolute uncertainty on the charge asymmetry varies within 0.2% [-] 0.4% in different muon pseudorapidity bins. The result provides significant constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton in the Bjorken-x range from 0.001 to 0.1.
Book Synopsis A Study of W Boson Decay Charge Asymmetry Using Hadronic Tau Decays in Proton - Anti-proton Collisions at {u221A}s by :

This book was released on 1998 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of the tau charge asymmetry in events where the taus are produced by W decays. This charge asymmetry appears as different rapidity distributions for positive and negative taus. Two competing effects generate tau charge asymmetry. The production mechanism for the W gauge boson generates a charge asymmetry which is a function of the ratio of parton distribution functions, d(x)=u(x), measured at x ̃MW/√s. This is the dominant effect for tau charge asymmetry at small rapidity. At higher rapidity, however, the competing charge asymmetry from parity violation in W decay to taus becomes dominant. This tau asymmetry measurement is consistent with the Standard Model with a x2 per degree of freedom equal to 2.5 for 4 degrees of freedom when the asymmetry measurement is folded about y = 0, taking advantage of the CP symmetry of the underlying physics, and 8.9 for 8 degrees of freedom when it is not. This measurement introduces some methods and variables of interest to future analyses using hadronic decay modes of taus. This work was done using the CDF detector in $ar{p}$p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV at Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator.

Book Synopsis The D0 Muon System and Early Results on Its Performance by :
Download or read book The D0 Muon System and Early Results on Its Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The D0 detector is a large, general-purpose detector designed to take full advantage of the 2 TeV energy of the Fermilab collider. The design of the experiment emphasizes accurate identification, complete angular acceptance, and precise measurement of the decay products of W and Z bosons: charged leptons (both electrons and muons), quarks and gluons, which emerge as collimated jets of particles, and noninteracting particles, such as neutrinos. The primary physics goals of D0 include searching for new phenomena, such as the top quark or particles outside the standard model, and high-precision studies of the W and Z bosons. In addition, the excellent muon identification will allow the study of b-quark production and decay. This report will describe D0's muon system, give preliminary measurements of chamber and trigger rates, and discuss muon identification.

Download or read book Updated Measurement of the Anamalous Like-sign Dimuon Charge Asymmetry at written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an updated measurement of the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry performed using 9 fb−1 of data recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measured value of ( -0.787 ± 0.172(stat) ± 0.093(syst))% is 3.9 standard deviations from the Standard Model (SM) predicted value. We also present a study which shows that the dependence of the asymmetry on the muon impact parameter is consistent with the hypothesis that it originates from semileptonic b-hadron decays.
