Book excerpt: As atuais regulamentações legais do sistema de ensino brasileiro garantem o direito à inclusão escolar das pessoas com deficiência no ensino regular e reconhecem a diversidade humana como uma característica inerente à constituição de uma sociedade democrática. Por outro lado o Decreto 5.296/2004, que regulamenta as Leis 10.048/2000 e 10.098/2000, estabelece os critérios básicos para promover a acessibilidade das pessoas com deficiência ou com mobilidade reduzida. Nesse contexto, a presente dissertação se desenvolve a partir do tema da acessibilidade espacial e busca contribuir na re-qualificação do edifício escolar através da adequação de suas características arquitetônicas para que atenda as necessidades sociais e funcionais de todos os alunos. Para isso, foram desenvolvidos estudos de caso em escolas do ensino fundamental através de uma abordagem denominada multimétodos. Buscou-se, além disso, adquirir conhecimento teórico-prático sucessivo e cumulativo sobre a pessoa com deficiência e a sua capacidade funcional na realização das atividades escolares. A análise e avaliação da realidade encontrada nos estudos de caso foram tratadas considerando os dados técnicos dispostos na Norma Brasileira de Acessibilidade - NBR 9050/04 quanto ao atendimento dos componentes de acessibilidade espacial - orientação espacial, uso, deslocamento e comunicação - e à relação dos alunos com deficiência no desenvolvimento das atividades próprias do ambiente escolar. Buscou-se, ademais disso, sistematizar as informações obtidas de modo a servir de base para elaborar recomendações projetuais para criar ambientes acessíveis de acordo com os 4 componentes de acessibilidade espacial. Espera-se com este estudo contribuir para o aprimoramento e desenvolvimento de uma norma de acessibilidade espacial específica para ambientes escolares.
