Download or read book Housing the Homeless and Poor written by George Fallis and published by Toronto ; Buffalo : University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiversities are sprawling conglomerates that provide liberal undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. As well-springs of innovation and ideas, these universities represent the core of society's research enterprise. Multiversities, Ideas, and Democracy forcibly argues that, in the contemporary world, multiversities need to be conceptualized in a new way, that is, not just as places of teaching and research, but also as fundamental institutions of democracy. Building upon the history of universities, George Fallis discusses how the multiversity is a distinctive product of the later twentieth century and has become an institution of centrality and power. He examines five characteristics of our age - the constrained welfare state, the information technology revolution, postmodern thought, commercialization, and globalization - and in each case explains how the dynamic of multiversity research alters societal circumstances, leading to the alteration of the institution itself and creating challenges to its own survival. The character of our age demands reappraisal of the multiversity, Fallis argues, in order to safeguard them from so-called 'mission drift.' Writing from a multi-national perspective, this study establishes how similar ideas are shaping multiversities across the Anglo-American world. Ultimately, Multiversities, Ideas, and Democracy seeks to uncover the ethos of the multiversity and to hold such institutions accountable for their contribution to democratic life. It will appeal to anyone interested in the role of education in society.

Download or read book Still Renovating written by Greg Suttor and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social housing - public, non-profit, or co-operative - was once a part of Canada's urban success story. After years of neglect and many calls for affordable homes and solutions to homelessness, housing is once again an important issue. In Still Renovating, Greg Suttor tells the story of the rise and fall of Canadian social housing policy. Focusing on the main turning points through the past seven decades, and the forces that shaped policy, this volume makes new use of archival sources and interviews, pays particular attention to institutional momentum, and describes key housing programs. The analysis looks at political change, social policy trends, housing market conditions, and game-changing decisions that altered the approaches of Canadian governments, their provincial partners, and the local agencies they supported. Reinterpreting accounts written in the social housing heyday, Suttor argues that the 1970s shift from low-income public housing to community-based non-profits and co-ops was not the most significant change, highlighting instead the tenfold expansion of activity in the 1960s and the collapse of social housing as a policy priority in the 1990s. As housing and neighbourhood issues continue to flare up in municipal, provincial, and national politics, Still Renovating is a valuable resource on Canada’s distinctive legacy in affordable housing.
Book Synopsis Energy Efficient Affordable Housing by : Sasha Tsenkova
Download or read book Energy Efficient Affordable Housing written by Sasha Tsenkova and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comparative assessment of the energy-efficiency retrofit programs in the social housing sector of Canadian cities, focusing on program efficiency and effectiveness. The analytical framework explores key policy instruments - regulatory, fiscal and institutional - in relation to major results achieved. The approach is interdisciplinary, supported by rich empirical data from case studies, observations and interviews. The book explores important strategies for the provision of green and affordable housing, while addressing climate change imperatives and resilience issues. This is of great interest to researchers, policy makers, city leaders, professionals and students. Its value added contribution to scholarship is complemented by practical relevance for social housing organisations in countries with a small residual housing sector. It offers valuable lessons for the design, planning and implementation of energy retrofit programs in North America and beyond.

Book Synopsis The Municipal Role in Housing by : Jill Atkey
Download or read book The Municipal Role in Housing written by Jill Atkey and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Municipalities, provinces, and the federal government have recently produced plans and strategies to address Canada's housing affordability crisis, highlighting the need to ensure proper coordination across governments. The four papers in this report identify the ideal role of municipalities in housing policy, where municipalities currently face constraints, how other orders of government can support municipalities, and where intergovernmental cooperation is needed. Carolyn Whitzman, Alexandra Flynn, Penny Gurstein, and Craig Jones discuss the need to increase federal and provincial funding to support municipal action on affordable housing. Lilian Chau and Jill Atkey argue that the approvals process needs to be streamlined to accelerate construction of non-profit rental housing. Greg Suttor writes that for social housing, cities need regional and federal-provincial partnerships. Nick Falvo argues increased investment in municipally led programs is necessary to tackle homelessness.
