Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vespucci Reprints, d104s and Studies, Vol. 5: The Mundus Novus; Letter to Lorenzo Pietro Di Medici On a former occasion I wrote to you at some length concerning my return from those new regions which we found and explored with the fleet, at the cost, and by the command of this Most Serene King of Portugal. And these we may rightly call a new world. Because our an cestors had no knowledge of. Them, and it will be a matter wholly new to all those who hear about them. For this transcends the view held by our ancients, inasmuch as most of them hold that there is no continent to the south beyond the equator, but only the sea which they named the Atlantic; and if some of them did aver that a continent there was, they denied with abundant argument that it was a habitable land. But that this their Opinion is false and utterly opposed to the truth, this my last voyage has made manifest; for in those southern parts I have found a continent more densely peopled and abounding in animals than our Europe or Asia or Africa, and, in addition, a climate milder and more delightful than in any other region known to us, as you Shall learn in the following account wherein we Shall set succinctly down only capital matters and the things more worthy of com ment and memory seen or heard by me in this new world, as will appear below. Download or read book The New Republic written by Colin Starnes and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Starnes radical interpretation of the long-recognized affinity of Thomas More’s Utopia and Plato’s Republic confirms the intrinsic links between the two works. Through commentary on More’s own introduction to Book I, the author shows the Republic is everywhere present as the model of the “best commonwealth,” which More must first discredit as the root cause of the dreadful evils in the collapsing political situation of sixteenth-century Europe. Starnes demonstrates how More, once having shorn the Republic of what was applicable to a society that had for a thousand years accepted and been moved by the Christian revelation, then “Christianized” it to arrive at one of the earliest and most coherent accounts of the ideal modern state: the description of Utopia in Book II. Knowing this radically new view of a long-recognized position may be questioned, the author has included a criticism and appreciation of the other major lines of interpretation concerning More’s Utopia.

More general I mean rarities and desiderata not necessarily confined to drama, of which, however, are many items that still require doing badly.
