Otorgar a la vida un sentido estético, antes que tener una connotación material, implicaría la capacidad de construir de manera coherente la dinámica de nuestra experiencia cotidiana y hacer de su expresión objetiva una fuente de gozo y sabiduría. Desde esta perspectiva la polémica afirmación de sir Herbert Read de que el artista no es un tipo especial de ser humano, sino que cada ser humano es un tipo especial de artista, parece adquirir sentido. Estas consideraciones me permiten argumentar la coherencia subyacente en la diversidad que compone este breve conjunto de ensayos. Mis circunstancias me han llevado a transitar el reino de los textos literarios y el de los textos políticos. Ambos conjuntos son partes complementarias de un mismo ejercicio: la interrogación de una realidad cuya dimensión es esencialmente personal. Son tres los mundos que componen este libro. El primero es el del texto literario, de allí el título del apartado "El mundo del texto". La segunda sección la he titulado "El texto del mundo", ello ha obedecido a mi afán de encontrar en las circunstancias mundiales signos que me brinden una percepción menos confusa de lo que sucede en México en general y en mi ámbito cotidiano en particular. La tercera y última sección del libro lleva el título de "El mundo sin texto". La razón es simple: el mundo de fines del siglo XX e inicios del XXI es particularmente difícil de asir en virtud de que el código de su lectura aún no está conformado. A los textos que el lector tiene en sus manos los anima un solo propósito: reflexionar sobre algunas vertientes de la diversidad que me ha tocado en suerte transitar. ¿Quién pudiera decir con Terencio, "hombre soy y nada de lo que es humano me es ajeno"? Pero ése es privilegio de muy pocos. La vastedad de lo humano no cabe en un solo mundo y la mayoría de los mortales construimos el nuestro integrando de la mejor manera los diferentes mundos que componen la esfera de nuestros modestos dominios.

Book excerpt: This book examines the ideological affinity that can be established between the classical ‘Bildungsroman’ and colonialist ideology on the basis of a literary analysis of ‘Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre’—considered by most critics to be the origin of the genre—and ‘Great Expectations’—one of the paradigmatic examples of the development of the Bildungsroman in English literature. This ideological affinity is understood as an example of what the Palestinian critic Edward Said has called a ‘structure of attitude and reference’: the convergence of different cultural manifestations that, although formally independent, contribute to a common purpose. The monograph also undertakes a study of the main characteristics of the classical ‘Bildungsroman’ from a formal and thematic point of view, and an analysis of the relationship between genre theories and Eurocentric discourses.
