It contains updated ver sions of most of the papers that were presented at the Workshop, as well as new material added by the authors. Four of the presented papers were not available for inclusion in the book: D. Sabbah, A computing with connections approach to visual recognition; R. M. Haralick, Fitting the gray tone intensity surface as a function of neighborhood size; E. M. Riseman, Hierarchical boundary formation; and W. L. Mahaffey, L. S. Davis, and J. K. Aggarwal, Region correspondence in multi-resolution images taken from dynamic scenes. The number and variety of papers indicates the timeliness of the H0rkshop. Multiresolution methods are rapidly gaining recognition as an important theme in image processing and analysis. I would like to express my thanks to the National Science Foundation for their support of the Workshop under Grant MCS-82-05942; to Barbara Hope for organizing and administering the Workshop; to Janet Salzman and Fran Cohen, for retyping the papers; and above all, to the speakers and other partici pants, for making the Workshop possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiresolution analysis using the wavelet transform has received considerable attention in recent years by researchers in various fields. It is a powerful tool for efficiently representing signals and images at multiple levels of detail with many inherent advantages, including compression, level-of-detail display, progressive transmission, level-of-detail editing, filtering, modeling, fractals and multifractals, etc. This book aims to provide a simple formalization and new clarity on multiresolution analysis, rendering accessible obscure techniques, and merging, unifying or completing the technique with encoding, feature extraction, compressive sensing, multifractal analysis and texture analysis. It is aimed at industrial engineers, medical researchers, university lab attendants, lecturer-researchers and researchers from various specializations. It is also intended to contribute to the studies of graduate students in engineering, particularly in the fields of medical imaging, intelligent instrumentation, telecommunications, and signal and image processing. Given the diversity of the problems posed and addressed, this book paves the way for the development of new research themes, such as brain–computer interface (BCI), compressive sensing, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), tissue characterization (bones, skin, etc.) and the analysis of complex phenomena in general. Throughout the chapters, informative illustrations assist the uninitiated reader in better conceptualizing certain concepts, taking the form of numerous figures and recent applications in biomedical engineering, communication, multimedia, finance, etc.

Book excerpt: This book presents theoretical and practical aspects of the interaction between low and high level image processing. Multiresolution analysis owes its popularity mostly to wavelets and is widely used in a variety of applications. Low level image processing is important for the performance of many high level applications. The book includes examples from different research fields, i.e. video surveillance; biomedical applications (EMG and X-ray); improved communication, namely teleoperation, telemedicine, animation, augmented/virtual reality and robot vision; monitoring of the condition of ship systems and image quality control.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents a new theory for analysis, comparison and design of nonlinear smoothers, linking to established practices. Although a part of mathematical morphology, the special properties yield many simple, powerful and illuminating results leading to a novel nonlinear multiresolution analysis with pulses that may be as natural to vision as wavelet analysis is to acoustics. Similar to median transforms, they have the advantages of a supporting theory, computational simplicity, remarkable consistency, full trend preservation, and a Parceval-type identity. Although the perspective is new and unfamiliar to most, the reader can verify all the ideas and results with simple simulations on a computer at each stage. The framework developed turns out to be a part of mathematical morphology, but the additional specific structures and properties yield a heuristic understanding that is easy to absorb for practitioners in the fields like signal- and image processing. The book targets mathematicians, scientists and engineers with interest in concepts like trend, pulse, smoothness and resolution in sequences.

This book provides an in-depth introduction to a range of these innovative, avante-garde data-processing techniques. It develops the reader's understanding of each technique and then shows with practical examples how they can be applied to improve the skills of graduate students and researchers in astronomy, electrical engineering, physics, geophysics and medical imaging. What sets this book apart from others on the subject is the complementary blend of theory and practical application. Throughout, it is copiously illustrated with real-world examples from astronomy, electrical engineering, remote sensing and medicine. It also shows how many, more traditional, methods can be enhanced by incorporating the new wavelet and multiscale methods into the processing. For graduate students and researchers already experienced in image processing and data analysis, this book provides an indispensable guide to a wide range of exciting and original data-analysis techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to image processing, an overview of the transforms which are most widely used in the field of image processing, and an introduction to the application of multiscale transforms in image processing. The book is divided into three parts, with the first part offering the reader a basic introduction to image processing. The second part of the book starts with a chapter on Fourier analysis and Fourier transforms, wavelet analysis, and ends with a chapter on new multiscale transforms. The final part of the book deals with all of the most important applications of multiscale transforms in image processing. The chapters consist of both tutorial and highly advanced material, and as such the book is intended to be a reference text for graduate students and researchers to obtain state-of-the-art knowledge on specific applications. The technique of solving problems in the transform domain is common in applied mathematics and widely used in research and industry, but is a somewhat neglected subject within the undergraduate curriculum. It is hoped that faculty can use this book to create a course that can be offered early in the curriculum and fill this void. Also, the book is intended to be used as a reference manual for scientists who are engaged in image processing research, developers of image processing hardware and software systems, and practising engineers and scientists who use image processing as a tool in their applications.

Book excerpt: Many computionally challenging problems omnipresent in science and engineering exhibit multiscale phenomena so that the task of computing or even representing all scales of action is computationally very expensive unless the multiscale nature of these problems is exploited in a fundamental way. Some diverse examples of practical interest include the computation of fluid turbulence, structural analysis of composite materials, terabyte data mining, image processing, and a multitude of others. This book consists of both invited and contributed articles which address many facets of efficient multiscale representation and scientific computation from varied viewpoints such as hierarchical data representations, multilevel algorithms, algebraic homogeni- zation, and others. This book should be of particular interest to readers interested in recent and emerging trends in multiscale and multiresolution computation with application to a wide range of practical problems.
