Book excerpt: We study secret communication over the discrete memoryless multiple-access channel with the following cooperation strategies: (i) degraded message sets, (ii) a common message, (iii) conferencing, (iv) cribbing, (v) feedback, and (vi) generalized feedback. For developing strong secrecy results, we utilize the methods and techniques of channel resolvability, which involves the characterization of the amount of randomness required at the inputs of the channel to approximately produce a chosen i.i.d. output distribution. For the multiple-access with degraded message sets, a common message, conferencing and feedback, we exactly characterize the channel resolvability region. For the multiple access channel with cribbing, we exactly characterize the channel resolvability region for the causal cribbing and non-causal cribbing scenarios. For the strictly-causal cribbing scenario, inner and outer bounds are provided. For the multiple-access channel with generalized feedback, we provide two inner bounds representing the role of decoding and randomness extraction, which can also be combined. Finally, leveraging the resolvability results, we derive achievable strong secrecy rate regions for each of the cooperation scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a heavy proliferation of connected devices all across the globe, cooperation among entities of the network components cannot be neglected. Especially when the available resources are scarce, system components must cooperate to exchange information strategically, in order to push the overall network performance to its ultimate performance limits. In this thesis, we study new models of cooperation in both multi-user communication and compression networks, which are two broad categories classifying Network Information Theoretic problems. The common precept for the proposed models of cooperation is that of \textit{partial or deterministic-function cribbing}, where the entities in the network (transmitters or receivers) cooperate with each other by sensing a deterministic function of each others' signals. In the first part of the thesis, we investigate the role of cooperation in multi-user communication systems. Specifically, we study the Multiple Access Channel (MAC), a canonical communication model in Network Information Theory, where multiple transmitters or encoders wish to communicate their private messages to a single receiver or decoder over a channel, which here is a shared wireless noisy medium. We consider a two-encoder model, and introduce cooperation between the encoders via deterministic-function cribbing, that is when an encoder senses a deterministic function of the channel input symbols of the other encoder (and/or {\it vice versa}), and uses them to send encoded symbols over the channel. We derive fundamental limits by constructing essentially optimal schemes and show via examples that cooperation helps in boosting the performance. In the second part of the thesis, the role of cooperation in multi-user compression systems is investigated. Specifically, we consider the Successive Refinement (SR) setting as the compression setup, where a single encoder describes a source, to multiple decoders, with different levels of refinement. That is, while all decoders may receive common description of information about the source, only some of the decoders may receive a refined description of information about the source. The decoders need to reconstruct the source under a given distortion criterion. Here we consider a two-decoder model and allow cooperation between the decoders, via deterministic-function cribbing, that is, the decoder with crude (less) information about the source (the one which receives only the common information), gets auxiliary information in the form of a deterministic function of the reconstruction symbols of the other decoder (the one which has access to both common and refined information). We derive the fundamental limits, as well as formalize new coding schemes which are optimal. Examples are also given which show that cooperation results in a much better rate-distortion tradeoff than that without cooperation. Finally, in the third part of the thesis, we connect the dots to understand the dualities between the two settings considered, that is, Multiple Access Channel with Encoder Cooperation and Successive Refinement with Decoder Cooperation. The duality proposed is comprehensive in the sense that one setting can be completely transformed into another, including dual schemes, cooperating strategies and rate regions.

Book excerpt: ADVANCED WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERNET THIRD EDITION ADVANCED WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERNET Future Evolving Technologies The new edition of Advanced Wireless Communications: 4G Cognitive and Cooperative Broadband Technology, 2nd Edition, including the latest developments In the evolution of wireless communications, the dominant challenges are in the areas of networking and their integration with the Future Internet. Even the classical concept of cellular networks is changing and new technologies are evolving to replace it. To reflect these new trends, Advanced Wireless Communications & INTERNET builds upon the previous volumes, enhancing the existing chapters, and including a number of new topics. Systematically guiding readers from the fundamentals through to advanced areas, each chapter begins with an introductory explanation of the basic problems and solutions followed with an analytical treatment in greater detail. The most important aspects of new emerging technologies in wireless communications are comprehensively covered including: next generation Internet; cloud computing and network virtualization; economics of utility computing and wireless grids and clouds. This gives readers an essential understanding of the overall environment in which future wireless networks will be operating. Furthermore, a number of methodologies for maintaining the network connectivity, by using tools ranging from genetic algorithms to stochastic geometry and random graphs theory, and a discussion on percolation and connectivity, are also offered. The book includes a chapter on network formation games, covering the general models, knowledge based network formation games, and coalition games in wireless ad hoc networks. Illustrates points throughout using real-life case studies drawn from the author’s extensive international experience in the field of telecommunications Fully updated to include the latest developments, key topics covered include: advanced routing and network coding; network stability control; relay-assisted Wireless Networks; multicommodity flow optimization problems, flow optimization in heterogeneous networks, and dynamic resource allocation in computing clouds Methodically guides readers through each topic from basic to advanced areas Focuses on system elements that provide adaptability and re-configurability, and discusses how these features can improve wireless communications system performance Enjoyed this book? The authors discuss current paradigm shifts in communication networks that are needed to add computing and storage to the simple transport ideas of prevailing networks. They show how these ‘softwarized’ solutions break new grounds to reduce latency and increase resilience. The authors discuss how even though these solutions have inherent problems due to introduced computing latency and energy consumption, the problems can be solved by hybrid classical-quantum communication networks. The book brings together quantum networking, quantum information theory, quantum computing, and quantum simulation.

Voynich in 1912. This report pulls together all the information the author could obtain from all the sources she has examined, and to present it in an orderly fashion. The resulting survey will provide a firm basis upon which other students may build their work, whether they seek to decipher the text or simply to learn more about the problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spearhead of Logistics is a narrative branch history of the U.S. Army's Transportation Corps, first published in 1994 for transportation personnel and reprinted in 2001 for the larger Army community. The Quartermaster Department coordinated transportation support for the Army until World War I revealed the need for a dedicated corps of specialists. The newly established Transportation Corps, however, lasted for only a few years. Its significant utility for coordinating military transportation became again transparent during World War II, and it was resurrected in mid-1942 to meet the unparalleled logistical demands of fighting in distant theaters. Finally becoming a permanent branch in 1950, the Transportation Corps continued to demonstrate its capability of rapidly supporting U.S. Army operations in global theaters over the next fifty years. With useful lessons of high-quality support that validate the necessity of adequate transportation in a viable national defense posture, it is an important resource for those now involved in military transportation and movement for ongoing expeditionary operations. This text should be useful to both officers and noncommissioned officers who can take examples from the past and apply the successful principles to future operations, thus ensuring a continuing legacy of Transportation excellence within Army operations. Additionally, military science students and military historians may be interested in this volume.
