Book excerpt: This project focuses on the development of research tools and methods that are used to study the relationship between neural activity and subsequent hemodynamic responses in the human brain. This relationship, referred to as neurovascular coupling, involves complex interactions between neurons, glial cells and vascular endothelial cells. Noninvasive functional neuroimaging studies that combine multiple modalities can be used to study neurovascular coupling to identify its characteristics in various populations. Neurovascular coupling has been studied using a variety of combinations of brain imaging systems such as electroencephalography (EEG), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), magnetoencephalography (MEG), functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transcrannial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and positron emission tomography (PET), among others. It has been studied to gain a better understanding of brain function, and to better understand a variety of neurodegenerative diseases and the mechanisms that affect cognitive function. We have developed a noninvasive head probe that combines NIRS and EEG to monitor and record neurovascular brain activity with whole head coverage. It is low cost, easy to use, fabricate, and assemble, and is designed and manufactured for compatibility with MRI and MEG. In addition, we have devoted significant efforts towards design optimization of the components to maximize performance metrics, such as electrical and optical connectivity, positioning accuracy and precision, and to minimize issues with mechanical stability or reusability. We have also developed simulation software to optimize NIRS probe design by automatically computing the coordinates of all electrode and optode positions on a surface mesh of a head. Finally, we completed an analysis of joint forward and inverse models for combined EEG and NIRS. These models contain all the necessary data to perform tomographic reconstructions of measurement data recorded using the NIRS-EEG head probe. They also show the correspondence between the sensitivity of EEG and NIRS to the brain. The research tools developed in this project provide an integrated human interface and software tools for the investigation of fundamental questions regarding neurovascular coupling using multimodal EEG and NIRS.

Book excerpt: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is an invaluable functional brain imaging technique that provides direct, real-time monitoring of neuronal activity necessary for gaining insight into dynamic cortical networks. Our intentions with this book are to cover the richness and transdisciplinary nature of the MEG field, make it more accessible to newcomers and experienced researchers and to stimulate growth in the MEG area. The book presents a comprehensive overview of MEG basics and the latest developments in methodological, empirical and clinical research, directed toward master and doctoral students, as well as researchers. There are three levels of contributions: 1) tutorials on instrumentation, measurements, modeling, and experimental design; 2) topical reviews providing extensive coverage of relevant research topics; and 3) short contributions on open, challenging issues, future developments and novel applications. The topics range from neuromagnetic measurements, signal processing and source localization techniques to dynamic functional networks underlying perception and cognition in both health and disease. Topical reviews cover, among others: development on SQUID-based and novel sensors, multi-modal integration (low field MRI and MEG; EEG and fMRI), Bayesian approaches to multi-modal integration, direct neuronal imaging, novel noise reduction methods, source-space functional analysis, decoding of brain states, dynamic brain connectivity, sensory-motor integration, MEG studies on perception and cognition, thalamocortical oscillations, fetal and neonatal MEG, pediatric MEG studies, cognitive development, clinical applications of MEG in epilepsy, pre-surgical mapping, stroke, schizophrenia, stuttering, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, autism, aging and neurodegeneration, MEG applications in cognitive neuropharmacology and an overview of the major open-source analysis tools.

It sets out the key clinical and imaging features of the various causes of dementia and directs the reader from clinical presentation to neuroimaging and on to an accurate diagnosis whenever possible. After an introductory chapter on the clinical background, the available "toolbox" of structural and functional neuroimaging techniques is reviewed in detail, including CT, MRI and advanced MR techniques, SPECT and PET, and image analysis methods. The imaging findings in normal ageing are then discussed, followed by a series of chapters that carefully present and analyze the key findings in patients with dementias. Throughout, a practical approach is adopted, geared specifically to the needs of clinicians (neurologists, radiologists, psychiatrists, geriatricians) working in the field of dementia, for whom this book will prove an invaluable resource.

Book excerpt: Within the context of global health challenges posed by intractable neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, the significance of early diagnosis is critical for effective intervention, and scientists continue to discover new methods of detection. However, actual diagnosis goes beyond detection to include a significant analysis of combined data for many cases, which presents a challenge of several complicated calculations. Deep Learning Approaches for Early Diagnosis of Neurodegenerative Diseases stands as a groundbreaking work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and neuroscience. The book orchestrates a symphony of cutting-edge techniques and progressions in early detection by assembling eminent experts from the domains of deep learning and neurology. Through a harmonious blend of research areas and pragmatic applications, this monumental work charts the transformative course to revolutionize the landscape of early diagnosis and management of neurodegenerative disorders. Within the pages, readers will embark through the intricate landscape of neurodegenerative diseases, the fundamental underpinnings of deep learning, the nuances of neuroimaging data acquisition and preprocessing, the alchemy of feature extraction and representation learning, and the symphony of deep learning models tailored for neurodegenerative disease diagnosis. The book also delves into integrating multimodal data to augment diagnosis, the imperative of rigorously evaluating and validating deep learning models, and the ethical considerations and challenges entwined with deep learning for neurodegenerative diseases.
