This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multigrid Methods for Finite Elements combines two rapidly developing fields: finite element methods, and multigrid algorithms. At the theoretical level, Shaidurov justifies the rate of convergence of various multigrid algorithms for self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint problems, positive definite and indefinite problems, and singular and spectral problems. At the practical level these statements are carried over to detailed, concrete problems, including economical constructions of triangulations and effective work with curvilinear boundaries, quasilinear equations and systems. Great attention is given to mixed formulations of finite element methods, which allow the simplification of the approximation of the biharmonic equation, the steady-state Stokes, and Navier--Stokes problems.

Book Synopsis Domain Decomposition Methods for Nonconforming Finite Element Discretizations by : Jinsheng Gu

This book was released on 1999 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domain decomposition refers to numerical methods for obtaining solutions of scientific and engineering problems by combining solutions to problems posed on physical subdomains, or, more generally, by combining solutions to appropriately constructed subproblems. It has been a subject of intense interest recently because of its suitability for implementation on high performance computer architectures. It is well known that the nonconforming finite elements are widely used in and effective for the solving of partial differential equations derived from mechanics and engineering, because they have fewer degrees of freedom, simpler basis functions and better convergence behavior. But, there has been no extensive study of domain decomposition methods with nonconforming finite elements which lack the global continuity. Therefore, a rather systematic investigation on domain decomposition methods with nonconforming elements is of great significance and this is what the present book achieves. The theoretical breakthrough is the establishment of a series of essential estimates, especially the extension theorems for nonconforming elements, which play key roles in domain decomposition analysis. There are also many originalities in the design of the domain decomposition algorithms for the nonconforming finite element discretizations, according to the features of the nonconforming elements. The existing domain decomposition methods developed in the conforming finite element discrete case can be revised properly and extended to the nonconforming finite element discrete case correspondingly. These algorithms, nonoverlap or overlap, are as efficient as their counterparts in the conforming cases, and even easier in implementation.

Download or read book Multigrid Methods III written by HACKBUSCH and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain a selection of papers presented at the Third European Conference on Multigrid Methods which was held in Bonn on October 1-4, 1990. Following conferences in 1981 and 1985, a platform for the presentation of new Multigrid results was provided for a third time. Multigrid methods no longer have problems being accepted by numerical analysts and users of numerical methods; on the contrary, they have been further developed in such a successful way that they have penetrated a variety of new fields of application. The high number of 154 participants from 18 countries and 76 presented papers show the need to continue the series of the European Multigrid Conferences. The papers of this volume give a survey on the current Multigrid situation; in particular, they correspond to those fields where new developments can be observed. For example, se veral papers study the appropriate treatment of time dependent problems. Improvements can also be noticed in the Multigrid approach for semiconductor equations. The field of parallel Multigrid variants, having been started at the second European Multigrid Conference, is now at the centre of interest.

Book excerpt: Multigrid methods are among the most efficient iterative methods for the solution of linear systems which arise in many large scale scientific calculations. Every researcher working with the numerical solution of partial differential equations should at least be familiar with this powerful technique. This invaluable book presents results concerning the rates of convergence of multigrid iterations.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection from the papers presented at the Fourth European Multigrid Conference, held in Amsterdam, July 6-9,1993. There were 78 registered participants from 14 different countries, and 56 presentations were given. The preceding conferences in this series were held in Cologne (1981, 1985) and in Bonn (1990). Also at the other side of the Atlantic special multigrid conferences are held regularly, at intervals of two years, always in Copper Mountain, Colorado, US. The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods took place in April, 1993. Circumstances prevented us from putting a larger time interval between the Copper and Amsterdam meetings. The next European meeting is planned in 1996, a year later than the next Copper Meeting. When the first multigrid conference was held in 1981 there was no doubt about the usefulness of a conference dedicated specially to multigrid, because multigrid was a new and relatively unexplored subject, still in a pioneering stage, and pursued by specialists. The past twenty years have shown a rapid growth in theoretical understanding, useful applications and widespread acceptance of multi grid in the applied disciplines. Hence, one might ask whether there is still a need today for conferences specially dedicated to multigrid. The general consensus is that the answer is affirmative. New issues have arisen that are best addressed or need also be addressed from a special multigrid point of view.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simulation of radiation transport in the optically thick flux-limited diffusion regime has been identified as one of the most time-consuming tasks within large simulation codes. Due to multimaterial complex geometry, the radiation transport system must often be solved on unstructured grids. In this paper, we investigate the behavior and the benefits of the unstructured P sub 1 nonconforming finite element method, which has proven to be flexible and effective on related transport problems, in solving unsteady implicit nonlinear radiation diffusion problems using Newton and Picard linearization methods. Key words. nonconforrning finite elements, radiation transport, inexact Newton linearization, multigrid preconditioning.

Book Synopsis Wavelets, Multilevel Methods, and Elliptic PDEs by : M. Ainsworth
Download or read book Wavelets, Multilevel Methods, and Elliptic PDEs written by M. Ainsworth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the seventh EPSRC Numerical Analysis Summer School, held in 1996. Five major topics in numerical analysis are treated by world experts at a level which should be suitable for first year graduate students and experienced researchers alike, assuming onlythe knowledge acquired from a first degree in mathematics or in a scientific discipline with significant mathematical content. Often researchers need to obtain an up-to-date picture of work in an area with a substantial literature, either to avoid reproducing work which is already done, or to applyto their own research in a different subject. This book avoids the need to trawl through the literature by presenting important recent results together with references to all the main papers. Each contributor reviews the state of the art in his area, presenting new and often hitherto unpublishedmaterial.
Book Synopsis Domain Decomposition Methods in Scientific and Engineering Computing by : David E. Keyes
Download or read book Domain Decomposition Methods in Scientific and Engineering Computing written by David E. Keyes and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains proceedings from the Seventh International Conference on Domain Decomposition Methods, held at Pennsylvania State University in October 1993. The term ``domain decomposition'' has for nearly a decade been associated with the partly iterative, partly direct algorithms explored in the proceedings of this conference. Noteworthy trends in the current volume include progress in dealing with so-called ``bad parameters'' in elliptic partial differential equation problems, as well as developments in partial differential equations outside of the elliptically-dominated framework. Also described here are convergence and complexity results for novel discretizations, which bring with them new challenges in the derivation of appropriate operators for coarsened spaces. Implementations and architectural considerations are discussed, as well as partitioning tools and environments. In addition, the book describes a wide array of applications, from semiconductor device simulation to structural mechanics to aerodynamics. Presenting many of the latest results in the field, this book offers readers an up-to-date guide to the many facets of the theory and practice of domain decomposition.
