Book excerpt: This volume comprises the second part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023. The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or stationary solutions. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. In recent years, the efficient implementation of these methods in numerical software packages, more specifically to be used in supercomputers, has drawn some attention. The first volume contains all invited papers, as well as the contributed papers focusing on finite volume schemes for elliptic and parabolic problems. They include structure-preserving schemes, convergence proofs, and error estimates for problems governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. This volume is focused on finite volume methods for hyperbolic and related problems, such as methods compatible with the low Mach number limit or able to exactly preserve steady solutions, the development and analysis of high order methods, or the discretization of kinetic equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattering-based numerical methods are increasingly applied to the numerical simulation of distributed time-dependent physical systems. These methods, which possess excellent stability and stability verification properties, have appeared in various guises as the transmission line matrix (TLM) method, multidimensional wave digital (MDWD) filtering and digital waveguide (DWN) methods. This text provides a unified framework for all of these techniques and addresses the question of how they are related to more standard numerical simulation techniques. Covering circuit/scattering models in electromagnetics, transmission line modelling, elastic dynamics, as well as time-varying and nonlinear systems, this book highlights the general applicability of this technique across a variety of disciplines, as well as the inter-relationships between simulation techniques and digital filter design. provides a comprehensive overview of scattering-based numerical integration methods. reviews the basics of classical electrical network theory, wave digital filters, and digital waveguide networks. discusses applications for time-varying and nonlinear systems. includes an extensive bibliography containing over 250 references. Mixing theory and application with numerical simulation results, this book will be suitable for both experts and readers with a limited background in signal processing and numerical techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical procedures for solving the time-domain Maxwell equations based on the theory of characteristics were successfully developed. Both explicit and implicit methods were formulated by the time-central and spatial-windward algorithm to better describe wave motion. A new trapezoidal consistent implicit scheme was shown to be unconditionally stable for the linear initial value system and was able to generate numerical solutions comparable to those of the established explicit method. The formulation of the three-dimensional system including generalized coordinate system was completed but not explored. The present 2-D results on Cartesian frame demonstrated a potential for numerical efficiency improvement. Time-domain Maxwell equation, Trapezoidal consistent implicit scheme, Cartesian frame.

Book excerpt: In May 1995 a meeting took place at the Manchester Metropolitan Uni versity, UK, with the title International Workshop on Numerical Methods for Wave Propagation Phenomena. The Workshop, which was attended by 60 scientists from 13 countries, was preceded by a short course enti tled High-Resolution Numerical Methods for Wave Propagation Phenom ena. The course participants could then join the Workshop and listen to discussions of the latest work in the field led by experts responsible for such developments. The present volume contains written versions of their contributions from the majority of the speakers at the Workshop. Professor Amiram Harten, but for his untimely death at the age of 50 years, would have been one of the speakers at the Workshop. His remarkable contributions to Numerical Analysis of Conservation Laws are commemo rated in this volume, which includes the text of the First Harten Memorial Lecture, delivered by Professor P. L. Roe from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour, USA.

Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 9th conference on "Finite Volumes for Complex Applications" (Bergen, June 2020) are structured in two volumes. The first volume collects the focused invited papers, as well as the reviewed contributions from internationally leading researchers in the field of analysis of finite volume and related methods. Topics covered include convergence and stability analysis, as well as investigations of these methods from the point of view of compatibility with physical principles. Altogether, a rather comprehensive overview is given on the state of the art in the field. The properties of the methods considered in the conference give them distinguished advantages for a number of applications. These include fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory, carbon capture utilization and storage, geothermal energy and further topics. The second volume covers reviewed contributions reporting successful applications of finite volume and related methods in these fields. The finite volume method in its various forms is a space discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability, making the finite volume methods compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. The book is a valuable resource for researchers, PhD and master’s level students in numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations, as well as engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the middle of the last century, computing power has increased sufficiently that the direct numerical approximation of Maxwell's equations is now an increasingly important tool in science and engineering. Parallel to the increasing use of numerical methods in computational electromagnetism there has also been considerable progress in the mathematical understanding of the properties of Maxwell's equations relevant to numerical analysis. The aim of this book is to provide an up to date and sound theoretical foundation for finite element methods in computational electromagnetism. The emphasis is on finite element methods for scattering problems that involve the solution of Maxwell's equations on infinite domains. Suitable variational formulations are developed and justified mathematically. An error analysis of edge finite element methods that are particularly well suited to Maxwell's equations is the main focus of the book. The methods are justified for Lipschitz polyhedral domains that can cause strong singularities in the solution. The book finishes with a short introduction to inverse problems in electromagnetism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific computing, which involves the analysis of complex systems in real applications with numerical simulations, is becoming an important field of research in itself, in relation to theoretical investigations and physical experiments. In many cases, the underlying mathematical models consist of large systems of partial differential equations, which have to be solved with high accuracy and efficiency. Among the successful methods, in particular for discretizations on unstructured grids, are the Finite Volume schemes. This publication contains the contributions presented at the third Symposium on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, held in Porquerolles in June 2002. After a critical review of the submitted papers, 96 papers by authors from more than 20 countries are presented in this volume. The subject of these papers ranges from theoretical and numerical results such as theoretical foundation and validation, adaptivity in space and time, higher order discretization and parallelization, to physical, applications, such as multiphase flow and flows through porous media, magnetohydrodynamics, reacting and turbulent flows, elastic structures, granular avalanches, and image processing.
