Book Synopsis Polymeric Multicomponent Materials by : L. H. Sperling
Download or read book Polymeric Multicomponent Materials written by L. H. Sperling and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1997-09-24 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only comprehensive review of multicomponent polymer theory and applications Polymeric Multicomponent Materials is the first comprehensive review of the field to appear since the author's 1976 classic, Polymer Blends and Composites. As such, it is an indispensable resource for professionals and graduate students alike in polymer science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, physics, and mechanical engineering. The book begins with a review of essential terms, concepts, theories, and experimental facts and procedures concerning polymer-polymer and polymer-nonpolymer combinations. This material is followed by a series of chapters focusing on the relatively new subfield that has developed around polymer surfaces and interfaces. In the final section, the author covers a wide range of engineering polymer materials and systems. Emphasizing synthesis and mechanical behavior throughout, Professor Sperling treats all relevant chemical and physical aspects of both thermoplastics and thermosets. He provides in-depth coverage of most polymeric multicomponent materials currently being synthesized, including toughened plastics, reinforced elastomers, polymer blends, interpenetrating polymer networks, graft and block copolymers, and reinforcing and filling agents. He also explores a broad array of specific applications, including those for impact-resistant plastics, structural composites, coatings, carbon black reinforced elastomers, and fiber reinforced plastics. Polymeric Multicomponent Materials is certain to be the standard text/reference in the field well into the next century.

Book excerpt: Numerous practical problems connected to triboelectric phenomena remain unsolved in both the fabrication and behavior of polymer threads and fabrics in a variety of industrial articles. Using the results of unique experiments carried out in the countries of the former Soviet Union, this volume fills a gap in the science of tribology, presenting fundamental information on the nature of physical and chemical processes governing and accompanying tribodeformation and tribodisintegration of polymers. Details on electrophysical phenomena such as contact electrification and emergence of the electret state in polymer materials are also provided.
Book Synopsis Engineering the Multi-length Scale Structure of Self-assembled Conjugated Polymer Networks by : Gregory Matthew Newbloom
Download or read book Engineering the Multi-length Scale Structure of Self-assembled Conjugated Polymer Networks written by Gregory Matthew Newbloom and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers are a Nobel Prize winning class of materials known for their intrinsic semi-conducting properties and have been used in applications as diverse as organic-based solar cells, transistors, light emitting diodes, sensors and thermoelectric devices. These applications have varying, but optimized, structure and property requirements which often include an interconnected network of conjugated polymers to transport charge. In this work, self-assembly and gelation are explored as a platform to engineer the multi-length scale structure of conjugated polymer networks. A detailed understanding is developed through structural characterization of each stage of the self-assembly process: dissolved polymer, semi-crystalline fiber, fibrillar branching and percolated network formation. Variations in self-assembly conditions were utilized to develop multi-length scale structure-property relationships. Furthermore, a new method to directly incorporate these fibrillar network structures into thin films for organic electronics is discussed. This dissertation will demonstrate our work towards understanding the mechanisms behind conjugated polymer self-assembly in order to provide robust design parameters that can be tuned to generate specific structures, occurring on multiple length scales, and relevant properties for a diversity of applications.
