Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CCD photometry in the eight-color Vilnius + I system for 7250 stars down to I = 19.6 mag has been obtained in the 20 arcmin x 26' field of the open cluster IC 361 in Camelopardalis. The catalog of 1420 stars down to V ~ 18.5 mag is presented. It contains the coordinates, V magnitudes, seven color indices, quantitative photometric spectral types, absolute magnitudes and distances. The interstellar extinction is found to be non-uniform across the field, with the values of AV in the range 1.9 to 2.4 mag. The distribution of distance moduli of individual stars shows that the cluster is located as far as, or just beyond, the Perseus spiral arm.
Book Synopsis Star Clusters (IAU S266) by : International Astronomical Union. Symposium
Download or read book Star Clusters (IAU S266) written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Star clusters are important to many areas of astronomy, and as the basic building blocks of galaxies, they can be used as key diagnostic tools within a wide range of disciplines in astrophysics. Star cluster populations are powerful tracers of the formation, assembly and evolutionary history of their parent galaxies. Although their importance has been recognised for decades, only in recent years has this area seen a major investment in time and effort. IAU Symposium 266 consolidates the expertise of leading researchers from a variety of topical subfields in astrophysics, to provide a comprehensive presentation of cutting-edge developments in theory, observations and simulations of star clusters and star cluster systems across a range of sizes and epochs. This volume gives an account of this forefront research, answering fundamental questions that will improve our understanding of numerous related issues and show how this field will take its next major step forward.

Download or read book CCD Photometry and the Stellar Content of the Central Region of IC 1805 written by David R. Bretz and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Images of the central region of the open cluster IC 1805 were made with a 2033 x 2044 Kodak CCD imager using broad-band filters corresponding closely to the standard B, V, R, I, system of Johnson. Calibrated magnitudes were measured for 136 stars in the cluster, and temperatures and masses were estimated for 115 of these. A mass function was derived as defined by Scalo (1986) and is compared with an earlier determination for this cluster. The mass function also is compared with that of a similar star-forming region in Cygnus and with the initial mass function of field stars. A brief overview of CCD design and operation is included, along with some specifics about the R.I.T. camera, image reduction, and photometry procedures."--Abstract.

Book Synopsis Instrumentation and Research Programmes for Small Telescopes by : J.B. Hearnshaw
Download or read book Instrumentation and Research Programmes for Small Telescopes written by J.B. Hearnshaw and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986-09-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of IAU Symposium No. 118 on "Instrumentation. and Research Programmes for Small Telescopes", where small telescopes were defined as those ground-based instruments with apertures less than 1.5m. The scientific goal of the symposium was to emphasise research programmes which were more suited to smaller tele scopes, on which frequent regular observations can be made. A wide variety of topics on instrumentation, photometry, spectroscopy and polarimetry of objects in the solar system to extragalactic systems were discussed. Each of the four scientific days of the symposium comprised a number of invited review papers, contributed oral papers and discussion sessions devoted purely to the large number (~4) of poster papers. An introductory paper on the research potential of small telescopes sets the scene for the symposium. The proceedings have then been divided into three sections. Section I: Telescopes and instrumentation; Section II: Photometric research programmes; Section III: Spectroscopic research programmes. The diversity of topics within each of these sections indicated the extent to which small telescopes have (and can) contribute greatly to astronomical research. Dr J.A. Graham's summary of the symposium, which illustrates the opportunities available with small telescopes, concludes these proceedings. As in all symposia, the importance of the discussion following each paper was realised. The discussion was recorded on tape (and wherever possible on questions and answer sheets), transcribed and then edited.
