The higher echelon is a single location reffered to as the depot, which places orders for supply of a single com modity. The lower echelon consists of several points, called the retailers, which are supplied by shipments from the depot, and at which random demands for the item occur. Stocks are reviewed and decisions are made periodically. Orders and/or shipments may each require a fixed lead time before reaching their respective desti nations. Section II gives a short literature review of distribution research. Section III introduces the multi-echelon distribution system together with the underlying as sumptions and gives a description of how this problem can be viewed as a Markovian Decision Process. Section IV discusses the concept of cost modifications in a distribution context. Section V presents the test-examples together with their optimal solutions and also gives the characteristic properties of these optimal solutions. These properties then will be used in section VI to give adapted ver sions of various heuristics which were used in assembly experiments previously and which will be tested against the test-examples.

Book excerpt: Competitive pressures are forcing manufacturing companies to find new ways to provide a wide variety of products at reduced costs. Pull type material control strategies that make efficient use of available production capacities and optimize inventories could be very useful in improving factory operations. However, there is aneed for analytical tools that precisely model the operating characteristics of multi-product pull systems. Such models should not only provide reasonably accurate performance estimates butalso be amenable to rapid analysis of performance tradeoffs. This book presents an analytical approach to solve multi-product systems with pull type material control strategies. A state of the art queuing theory based approach to solve analytical models for multi-product pull systems is being discussed. A parametric decomposition based approach is used to analyze multi-product pull systems under different settings such as batch size constraints, multi-stage production, finite demand and raw material. The approach presented in this book has been found to be reasonably accurate even in realistic settings.

Book excerpt: This research creates a system to help PDAP Electronics Singapore control its inventories and achieve demand-driven production on a multiple-product production line. One stage is chosen for study in this thesis. An inventory supermarket combined with a Kanban visualization system is proposed to control the total inventories and schedule production. An ANOVA test is used to first decide the seasonality of demand. Then the inventory levels of the supermarket during each season are determined respectively using the safety stock model. The Kanban system will record the inventory and demand levels and direct daily production accordingly. The simulation results show that the proposed system is capable of controlling the inventory levels and delivering high customer service levels (>95%) at the studied stage. In addition, it could reduce the inventory cost of selected products by 10-15%. It is also suggested that the use of small batch sizes in production will significantly reduce the total inventory cost at the stage. The performance of the system also proves satisfactory in a multi-stage simulation. It is therefore recommended that PDAP implement and further fine-tune this system in its operation.

Book excerpt: Manufacturing industries are devoted to producing high-quality products in the most economical and timely manner. Quality, economics, and time not only indicate the customer-satisfaction level, but also measure the manufacturing per formance of a company. Today's manufacturing environments are becoming more and more complex, flexible, and information-intensive. Companies invest into the information technologies such as computers, communication networks, sensors, actuators, and other equipment that give them an abundance of information about their materials and resources. In the face of global competition, a manufacturing company's survival is becoming more dependent on how best this influx of in formation is utilized. Consequently, there evolves a great need for sophisticated tools of performance analysis that use this information to help decision makers in choosing the right course of action. These tools will have the capability of data analysis, modeling, computer simulation, and optimization for use in designing products and processes. International competition also has had its impact on manufacturing education and the government's support of it in the US. We see more courses offered in this area in industrial engineering and manufacturing systems engineering departments, operations research programs, and business schools. In fact, we see an increasing number of manufacturing systems engineering departments and manufacturing research centers in universities not only in the US but also in Europe, Japan, and many developing countries.

Book excerpt: 5th Werner Kern Award for Productivity Research 2005 Kanban control systems bear a great potential to significantly improve operations. A company may reap the full benefits of kanban control only after determining an optimal or near-optimal system configuration. To do that, methods are needed to evaluate the performance and operating costs of individual system configurations. We propose an innovative construction-kit approach that enables us to build stochastic analytical models of a large class of single- and multi-product kanban systems. The presented construction-kit approach may be extended and augmented in various directions.
