Book excerpt: Multi-Physics Modelling (MPM) is an innovative simulation technique that looks very promising for the employment in the field of nuclear engineering as an integrative analysis support in the design development of current and innovative nuclear reactors. This book presents a Multi-Physics Modelling (MPM) approach to the analysis of nuclear reactor core behaviour, developed to study the coupling between neutronics and thermo-hydrodynamics. Reference is made to the Molten Salt Reactor, one of the innovative nuclear systems under development in the framework of the Generation IV International Forum, but the same methodology can be applied to other reactor systems.

Book excerpt: The idea for this book originated during the workshop “Model order reduction, coupled problems and optimization” held at the Lorentz Center in Leiden from S- tember 19–23, 2005. During one of the discussion sessions, it became clear that a book describing the state of the art in model order reduction, starting from the very basics and containing an overview of all relevant techniques, would be of great use for students, young researchers starting in the ?eld, and experienced researchers. The observation that most of the theory on model order reduction is scattered over many good papers, making it dif?cult to ?nd a good starting point, was supported by most of the participants. Moreover, most of the speakers at the workshop were willing to contribute to the book that is now in front of you. The goal of this book, as de?ned during the discussion sessions at the workshop, is three-fold: ?rst, it should describe the basics of model order reduction. Second, both general and more specialized model order reduction techniques for linear and nonlinear systems should be covered, including the use of several related numerical techniques. Third, the use of model order reduction techniques in practical appli- tions and current research aspects should be discussed. We have organized the book according to these goals. In Part I, the rationale behind model order reduction is explained, and an overview of the most common methods is described.

Book excerpt: The aim of this paper was to model and simulate Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) specific phenomena, to analyzethem on an example of two different MSR designs, and to assess the accuracy of different codes.Although inherent safety features and interesting nuclear properties of MSRs present a number of poten-tial benefits for the field of nuclear energy production, there is an evident lack of experimental data, provenprototypes, and materials being able to withstand extreme conditions. In order to pave the way for MSRs aconsiderable amount of modeling and engineering work must be done. There are only few numerical tools whichare capable of simulating the complex behavior of such reactors properly. One of these codes, Moltres, is anapplication of MOOSE, a C++ based multiphysics simulation environment, and was utilized extensively in thisproject along with a Monte Carlo code called Serpent. The Serpent code was used to generate group constants for the multigroup diffusion equation solver em-bedded in Moltres, which is coupled with delayed neutron precursor (DNP) and thermal hydraulics equations.Simplified models of the Oak Ridge Nuclear Laboratory's Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) and ofSeaborg Technologies' Compact Molten Salt Reactor (CMSR) were created in the Serpent and in Gmsh soft-ware which was used to generate a mesh file for Moltres. Moltres simulations took advantage of a symmetryin the two dimensional geometrical models and included only the nuclear reactor core and the effect of heatremoval in the primary heat exchangers. Phenomena such as DNP transport with the moving fuel and crosssection change with the temperature were duly accounted for. Results for the MSRE case were compared to the original design calculations and a good qualitative anddecent quantitative agreement was found. Some propositions to be included in Seaborg Technologies' reactordesign were produced. Two transients, Unprotected Loss Of Flow and Unprotected Loss Of Heat Sink, werelooked into. The Moltres code proved to be a valuable tool to simulate MSRs. However, many uncertaintiesin the input data and numerous model simplifications caused the results to be only preliminary and requiringmore refinemen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Reactor Modeling closes the gap between Chemical Reaction Engineering and Fluid Mechanics. The second edition consists of two volumes: Volume 1: Fundamentals. Volume 2: Chemical Engineering Applications In volume 1 most of the fundamental theory is presented. A few numerical model simulation application examples are given to elucidate the link between theory and applications. In volume 2 the chemical reactor equipment to be modeled are described. Several engineering models are introduced and discussed. A survey of the frequently used numerical methods, algorithms and schemes is provided. A few practical engineering applications of the modeling tools are presented and discussed. The working principles of several experimental techniques employed in order to get data for model validation are outlined. The monograph is based on lectures regularly taught in the fourth and fifth years graduate courses in transport phenomena and chemical reactor modeling and in a post graduate course in modern reactor modeling at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Chemical Engineering, Trondheim, Norway. The objective of the book is to present the fundamentals of the single-fluid and multi-fluid models for the analysis of single and multiphase reactive flows in chemical reactors with a chemical reactor engineering rather than mathematical bias. Organized into 13 chapters, it combines theoretical aspects and practical applications and covers some of the recent research in several areas of chemical reactor engineering. This book contains a survey of the modern literature in the field of chemical reactor modeling.

Book excerpt: In a part of North Africa where, within miles, the backdrop can change dramatically from snow-blasted mountains to wind-scoured dunes live the Berber people of the Atlas Mountains. In the third book of her trilogy on African women, world-renowned photojournalist Margaret Courtney-Clarke examines the difficult lives and remarkable arts of Berber women. As modern times and modern warfare in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia have encroached on their centuries-old traditions, Berber women have begun to give up the old ways. Imazighen: The Vanishing Traditions of Berber Women is a record of a quickly disappearing way of life. As in her earlier books, Ndebele: The Art of an African Tribe and African Canvas: The Art of West African Women, Courtney-Clarke succeeds in capturing the spirit of the women by experiencing their world from season to season and by respecting their values and traditions. Through photographs, interviews, and observations, Courtney-Clarke documents the Berber women as they stoically carry water and firewood on their backs for miles of rocky terrain. And she records the beauty they have magically produced in their lives - through their spinning and weaving and their carefully coiled pottery - a metaphor for survival and creativity. Geraldine Brooks, award-winning journalist and an expert on life in the Middle East, accompanied Courtney-Clarke on her last trip to North Africa, and has written moving, thoughtful essays on the struggle of existence among the Berbers. With a glossary of Berber terms and a detailed map of the region, this book is not only a handsomely illustrated volume of the triumph of the arts of the Berber women, but a dramatic record of a people yielding to the pressures of the twentieth century.
