Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the distinctive Zoroastrian experience, and what is the common diasporic experience? The Zoroastrian Diaspora is the outcome of twenty years of research and of archival and fieldwork in eleven countries, involving approximately 250,000 miles of travel. It has also involved a survey questionnaire in eight countries, yielding over 1,840 responses. This is the first book to attempt a global comparison of Diaspora groups in six continents. Little has been written about Zoroastrian communities as far apart as China, East Africa, Europe, America, and Australia or on Parsis in Mumbai post-Independence. Each chapter is based on unused original sources ranging from nineteenth century archives to contemporary newsletters. The book also includes studies of Zoroastrians on the Internet, audio-visual resources, and the modern development of Parsi novels in English. As well as studying the Zoroastrians for their own inherent importance, this book contextualizes the Zoroastrian migrations within contemporary debates on Diaspora studies. John R. Hinnells examines what it is like to be a religious Asian in Los Angeles or London, Sydney or Hong Kong. Moreover, he explores not only how experience differs from one country to another, but also the differences between cities in the same country, for example, Chicago and Houston. The survey data is used firstly to consider the distinguishing demographic features of the Zoroastrian communities in various countries; and secondly to analyse different patterns of assimilation between different groups: men and women and according to the level and type of education. Comparisons are also drawn between people from rural and urban backgrounds; and between generations in religious beliefs and practices, including the preservation of secular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses the case of the Navi Mumbai urban project to bring out many of the problems inherent in the urbanisation process and in the nature of urban policy-making in post-colonial India. It illustrates how even a new city, built from scratch, is riddled with social and economic contradictions---well-planned and serviced areas coexisting with slums and shanties. The work questions some of the accepted solutions to urban policy especially with regard to urban land and distribution of civic infrastructure. Navi Mumbai is being used as a model for building new towns outside other cities in India. This detailed case study of Navi Mumbai reveals the strengths and weaknesses of this model of urbanisation and indicates the policy directions that can obliterate the duality that has characterised the Indian city all through the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you tame a wild virus in a city of 12 million people? This petrifying thought was at the top of many minds when the first two cases of coronavirus were detected in Mumbai on March 11, 2020. Covid-19, which had brought big nations with robust health systems down to their knees, soon found its way to Mumbai’s densest localities, including Dharavi. The coronavirus pandemic was Mumbai’s fourth encounter with a health emergency of an overwhelming scale. In 1896, the city had fought the bubonic plague. In 1918, the deadly Spanish Flu swept the city. Ninety-one years later, Mumbai was once again in the grip of a virus- Influenza H1N1. Then came the coronavirus, the biggest pandemic of the 21st century yet. Suresh Kakani’s Mumbai Fights Back offers a blow by blow account of the challenges and triumphs of India’s richest civic body in fighting an invisible enemy for two years. From erecting mammoth field hospitals on open grounds to guaranteeing beds for every patient, the book rivetingly chronicles the united efforts by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to curb the transmission and save lives.

With quicksilver, self-deprecating wit and a sharp eye for human weakness, the author delineates several chance encounters he has experienced over various stages of his life. Joglekar weaves a rich tapestry of these meetings, ranging from legal skirmishes and student squabbles to friendly dialogues, from office debates and socio-political commentaries to bhaang-induced gabfests. Like the Bollywood movies which are frequently referenced, an undercurrent of joie de vivre flows through the mix of mirth, outrage, ambition, and melodrama which this seasoned road warrior presents. A book not to be missed for all those who want a glimpse into modern Indias triumphs and travails, its heroes, anti-heroes, villains, and extras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gated Luxury Condominiums in India: A Socio-Spatial Arena for New Cosmopolitans critically examines gated luxury condominiums in contemporary India, exploring their role in shaping elite power and identity within the framework of neoliberalism. It delves into the spatial structure, perception and post-occupancy experience of these enclaves, offering valuable insights into India's urban development. This book convincingly elucidates the complex socio-spatial transformations underway in India, inviting readers to understand the depth and breadth of these changes, particularly within the rapidly expanding middle and upper-middle classes. It adopts a robust multi-disciplinary approach, combining methodologies such as spatial ethnography, threshold mapping, qualitative interviews and discourse analysis. Focused on the architectural typology of luxury condominiums, the study serves as a lens for broader social transformations grounded in case studies from Mumbai and Pune. Through a meticulous dissection of the lived experiences of various categories of users – owners, visitors and service staff – the book unveils the complex socio-spatial hierarchies perpetuated within these enclaves. Drawing on theories of cosmopolitanism and postcolonial critiques, the monograph makes a significant scholarly contribution to the disciplines of architecture and the built environment. It fills a gap in the existing literature on modern domesticity in India, offering original research that highlights how architecture is instrumental in socially divisive practices of elite formation. It will appeal to scholars, researchers and students across disciplines like architecture, landscape design, spatial sociology, urban studies and area studies, focusing on India and South Asia. It is particularly compelling for those interested in the sociocultural dynamics of the middle class, encompassing themes such as domesticity, material culture and spatial politics within the context of Indian condominiums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion 2021 (The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain) "It will become the standard work on the subject." Literary Review This major work provides the first comprehensive history of one of modernism's most defining and controversial architectural legacies: the 20th-century drive to provide 'homes for the people'. Vast programmes of mass housing – high-rise, low-rise, state-funded, and built in the modernist style – became a truly global phenomenon, leaving a legacy which has suffered waves of disillusionment in the West but which is now seeing a dramatic, 21st-century renaissance in the booming, crowded cities of East Asia. Providing a global approach to the history of Modernist mass-housing production, this authoritative study combines architectural history with the broader social, political, cultural aspects of mass housing – particularly the 'mass' politics of power and state-building throughout the 20th century. Exploring the relationship between built form, ideology, and political intervention, it shows how mass housing not only reflected the transnational ideals of the Modernist project, but also became a central legitimizing pillar of nation-states worldwide. In a compelling narrative which likens the spread of mass housing to a 'Hundred Years War' of successive campaigns and retreats, it traces the history around the globe from Europe via the USA, Soviet Union and a network of international outposts, to its ultimate, optimistic resurgence in China and the East – where it asks: Are we facing a new dawn for mass housing, or another 'great housing failure' in the making?
