A trimaran's float, or outer hull, is not as far from the main hull as the two catamaran hulls are from each other, so there's less room to straddle in a trimaran. 6. The catamaran has to drag its two hulls through the tack. A trimaran, properly designed, only has to drag one hull through the tack. 7. Trimarans are better upwind--they communicate with the pilot in a more direct manner. 8. Trimarans are safer than catamarans.9. Proa has one main hull and only one smaller outrigger hull on one side of the boat, usually to windward.10. Hydrofoils are racing trimarans fitted with J, T, and/or ladder foils; hydrofoils are underwater wings that accomplish the same thing in water that airplane wings do in air.

Dubrovsky (2004), Ships with Small Water-Plane Area, by V. Dubrovsky, K. Matveev, S. Sutulo, with detailed explanations of the newest data. In this respect, the book is unique and the most universal one written in English today. A brief history of applications is given as the base for future developments. The introduction contains a list of ship types and full terminology. Chapter One describes the specificity of general arrangement. Chapter Two speaks of how stability and non-sinkability differ clearly from the same qualities of mono-hulls. Chapter Three delves into resistance in calm water (major specificity and its use, series test results of catamarans with low-lengthening hulls, and twin- and triple-hull SWA models). Chapter Four is about seakeeping and performance on high seas (specifics of motion and the universal method of comparative evaluation). Chapter Five teaches readers about controllability and maneuverability specificity. Chapter Six shows structural strength (external loads, hull girder stress analysis and design, and simplified methods). Chapter Seven deals with d esign (basic factors, specific design algorithms and limitations, some new concepts: super-fast wave-piercing trimaran; 'semi-gliding' ships with small water-plane area, S/P SWA ships, feeder and fast container-carriers, motor yachts, carriers of helicopters and unmanned aircraft; transatlantic container-carriers, cruise ships, passenger ships for unequipped coasts, ships for seismic researching, multi-purpose pleasure and inexpensive research vessels, some small-sized vessels, and combat ships from corvettes to aircraft-carriers). The reason for this stems from the fact that the map information usually is extremely large and that low resolution maps in most applications require less heavy computations than maps represented in higher resolutions. Hierarchical spatial data structures for generation of maps in lower resolutions already exist, e.g. quad-trees and resolution pyramids. Many other spatial data structures that are non-hierarchical do not permit the generation of resolution hierarchies like the two above. One such structure is the run- length code (RLC), which has many powerful advantages that make the structure feasible in a GIS. For that reason a method for generation of resolution hierarchies based on RLC is needed. In this work an approach to the problem of generating a resolution hierarchy from RLC is described and discussed. A generalisation method based on recursive polygon approximation is described in detail."
