Book excerpt: Our program for the upgrade of the Naval Prototype Optical Interferometer with large telescopes and adaptive optics has produced a test-bed for the in system evaluation and testing of our MEMs adaptive optics components and system performances. We have already reported in recent publications the basic characteristics of the test-bed. In order to improve the capabilities of such laboratory set-up we have started an upgrade that aims at developing a Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCA) test-bed. This test bed is based on the use of multiple Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulators (LCSLMs) for producing different phase screens at different spatial locations within the set-up. Details of this new set-up are presented in another paper in these proceedings. This paper specifically deals with the analytic portion of the MCAO test-bed.

Book excerpt: Two deformable mirrors (DMs) with finite conjugate ranges are investigated for compensating amplitude and phase distortions due to laser propagation through turbulent atmospheres. Simulations are performed based on Adaptive Optics (AO) for an Airborne Laser-type scenario. The Strehl ratio, the number of branch points in DM controls, and the number of iterations to convergence are used as figures of merit to evaluate performance of the Sequential Generalized Projection Algorithm that generates mirror commands. The results are ensemble averages over 32 realizations of the scintillated test fields for each value of the Rytov parameter within the test scenario. The Gaussian beam shape that optimizes the Strehl ratio is determined. The least squares two-DM Strehl, phase-only Strehl, least squares phase-only Strehl, and uncompensated Strehl are also determined for comparison. Finally, for the Strehl ratio versus Rytov parameter analysis the Strehl is also calculated beyond the telescope by propagating the pre-compensated laser wavefront back through the phase screens of the modeled atmosphere. Results from the more critical beyond- telescope Strehl analysis indicate that a two-DM AO system provides an increase in performance of approximately 0.1 in Strehl as compared to the phase-only system for the most severe simulated turbulence (theoretical log-amlitude variance of 1.0)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-Conjugate Adaptive-Optical (MCAO) systems have been proposed as a means of compensating both intensity and phase aberrations in a beam propagating through strong-scintillation environments. Progress made on implementing a MCAO system at the Starfire Optical Range (SOR), Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, is discussed. As a preliminary step toward controlling a two Deformable Mirror (DM) system, the first-stage intensity redistribution experiment (FIRE) examines one aspect of an MCAO system-control and compensation of wavefront intensity. Two wavefront sensors (WFS) and a single DM are employed for this experiment. One WFS is placed conjugate to the DM while the second WFS is located at a distance which produces a desired fresnel number for the propagation between the WFSS. The WFS measurements are input to a Gerchberg-Saxton based control algorithm in order to determine the DM commands. The phase pattern introduces by the DM is chosen so propagation along the path between the two WFSS produces a desired a desired intensity profile at the second WFS. The second WFS is also used to determine the accuracy of the intensity redistribution and measure its effects on the wavefront phase. In the next phase of MCAO development, a second DM will be added conjugate to the second WFS in order to correct the remaining phase aberrations. The paper presents the setup and operation for FIRE along with initial laboratory results.

Book excerpt: This article investigates the use of a multi-conjugate adaptive optics system to improve the field-of-view for the system. The emphasis of this research is to develop techniques to improve the performance of optical systems with applications to horizontal imaging. The design and wave optics simulations of the proposed system are given. Preliminary results from the multi-conjugate adaptive optics system are also presented. The experimental system utilizes a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator and an interferometric wave-front sensor for correction and sensing of the phase aberrations, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss the design and implementation of a low-cost, high-resolution adaptive optics test-bed for vision research. It is well known that high-order aberrations in the human eye reduce optical resolution and limit visual acuity. However, the effects of aberration-free eyesight on vision are only now beginning to be studied using adaptive optics to sense and correct the aberrations in the eye. We are developing a high-resolution adaptive optics system for this purpose using a Hamamatsu Parallel Aligned Nematic Liquid Crystal Spatial Light Modulator. Phase-wrapping is used to extend the effective stroke of the device, and the wavefront sensing and wavefront correction are done at different wavelengths. Issues associated with these techniques will be discussed.

Book excerpt: High-contrast adaptive optics systems, such as those needed to image extrasolar planets, are known to require excellent wavefront control and diffraction suppression. At the Laboratory for Adaptive Optics on the Extreme Adaptive Optics testbed, we have already demonstrated wavefront control of better than 1 nm rms within controllable spatial frequencies. Corresponding contrast measurements, however, are limited by amplitude variations, including those introduced by the micro-electrical-mechanical-systems (MEMS) deformable mirror. Results from experimental measurements and wave optic simulations of amplitude variations on the ExAO testbed are presented. We find systematic intensity variations of about 2% rms, and intensity variations with the MEMS to be 6%. Some errors are introduced by phase and amplitude mixing because the MEMS is not conjugate to the pupil, but independent measurements of MEMS reflectivity suggest that some error is introduced by small non-uniformities in the reflectivity.
