Book Synopsis The Dignity of Every Human Being by : Kirk Niergarth
Download or read book The Dignity of Every Human Being written by Kirk Niergarth and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dignity of Every Human Being studies the vibrant New Brunswick artistic community which challenged the tyranny of the Group of Seven with socially-engaged realism in the 1930s and 40s. Using extensive archival and documentary research, Kirk Niergarth follows the work of regional artists such as Jack Humphrey and Miller Brittain, writers such as P.K. Page, and crafts workers such as Kjeld and Erica Deichmann. The book charts the rise and fall of social modernism in the Maritimes and the style's deep engagement with the social and economic issues of the Great Depression and the Popular Front. Connecting local, national, and international cultural developments, Niergarth's study documents the attempts of Depression-era artists to question conventional ideas about the nature of art, the social function of artists, and the institutions of Canadian culture. The Dignity of Every Human Being records an important and previously unexplored moment in Canadian cultural history.
Book Synopsis Canadian Painters in a Modern World, 1925–1955 by : Lora Senechal Carney
Download or read book Canadian Painters in a Modern World, 1925–1955 written by Lora Senechal Carney and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Roaring Twenties and the Group of Seven to the Automatistes and the early Cold War, Canadian artists lived through and embodied an era of global tumult and change. With an interweaving of historical narrative, lavish illustrations, and writings by many of Canada's most revered cultural figures, Lora Senechal Carney illuminates the lives, perspectives, and works of the era's painters and provides glimpses of the sculptors, poets, dancers, critics, and filmmakers with whom they associated. Canadian Painters in a Modern World gives readers direct access to a carefully curated selection of writings, artworks, photos, and other documents that help to reconstruct the public spheres in which artists including Paul-Émile Borduas, Emily Carr, Alex Colville, Lawren Harris, David Milne, and Pegi Nicol MacLeod circulated. Each of the book’s eight chapters consists of a narrative about a key issue or debate, focusing on the relationship of art to politics and society, and on how these are negotiated in an individual's life. Relating artistic engagement with and responses to the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, and the Cold War, Senechal Carney discovers a common desire for new connections between art and life. Revealing continuities, ruptures, and watershed moments, Canadian Painters in a Modern World showcases artistic production within specific socio-political contexts to shed new light on Canadian art during three decades of conflict and crisis.

Book Synopsis Representing the Black Female Subject in Western Art by : Charmaine A. Nelson
Download or read book Representing the Black Female Subject in Western Art written by Charmaine A. Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first concentrated examination of the representation of the black female subject in Western art through the lenses of race/color and sex/gender. Charmaine A. Nelson poses critical questions about the contexts of production, the problems of representation, the pathways of circulation and the consequences of consumption. She analyzes not only how, where, why and by whom black female subjects have been represented, but also what the social and cultural impacts of the colonial legacy of racialized western representation have been. Nelson also explores and problematizes the issue of the historically privileged white artistic access to black female bodies and the limits of representation for these subjects. This book not only reshapes our understanding of the black female representation in Western Art, but also furthers our knowledge about race and how and why it is (re)defined and (re)mobilized at specific times and places throughout history.

Book Synopsis Scott, Brandtner, Eveleigh, Webber by : Esther Trépanier
Download or read book Scott, Brandtner, Eveleigh, Webber written by Esther Trépanier and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four artists who are today relatively or almost entirely unknown – one woman and three men – nevertheless played a part in the aesthetic upheavals that led to abstraction in 1940s Montreal. Very active in the art milieu throughout the decade, Marian Dale Scott, Fritz Brandtner, Henry Eveleigh, and Gordon Webber captured the attention of critics of the time, who employed the term “abstract art” to describe both non-objective works and bold formal explorations that retained some reference to visible reality. An examination of these artists’ practices reveals a remarkable openness to international contemporary art trends – French, German, British, and American. Their work and its critical reception conjure a complex picture of the debates on abstraction that took place in Montreal during the 1940s, so often reduced to the controversies surrounding the emergence of the Automatiste movement. The artistic innovations of Paul-Émile Borduas and his group and the radical tone of their 1948 manifesto Refus global cemented their status as Quebec’s abstract avant-garde but also had the effect of eclipsing other visions of abstraction being explored during the same period. This book reinstates the oeuvres of these forgotten protagonists in the narrative of abstract art, illustrating how their practices encompassed a variety of themes: emotion, science, human experience in the broadest sense – but also, as the Second World War unfolded, the violence that marked their era.
