Book excerpt: Tembeli is a beautiful island in Muzanga located somewhere in the heart of the Niger Delta, an island so lavishly blessed by nature with natural and material resources. The people lived in perfect harmony until Oilgate, a multinational Oil company struck its first oil well in Tembeli. Ever since then, things have never been the same in Tembeli. For long, the people found it themselves in a period of no peace. Faced with intimidation and marginalization by the military government of Muzanga, who felt that their crude oil revenue base was being threatened by Tembelis outcry for environmental violations by Oilgate, the people vowed to defend their kingdom with the last drop of their blood. This is a story that was never told and will touch even a heart as cold as steel.

Book excerpt: Born in Barbados to a poor black family bordering a major sugar cane plantation, Tony Blenman immigrated to Canada in 1969. All he wanted was to be treated as a decent human being worthy of love and respect. Instead, he experienced multiple traumas in the form of sexual abuse by two siblings and a person in the community, physical abuse by his mother, and emotional abuse by his mother and others in the community, including more than one teacher who thought children learned through being beaten. As a child, he witnessed violence and abuse in his home, in the behaviour of others, and at school. A devout Christian who knew the difference between right and wrong, he was constantly called a liar and beaten for telling the truth. He survived a mother who was herself physically abused as a child. Through it all, he nurtured the light of his faith, his dreams of escaping poverty and abuse, and finding a new life, new hope and new purpose in Canada. Other Voices is one man's journey to a life of hope, love, faith and perseverance in the face of sometimes overwhelming adversity. It tells the story of the many voices that shaped his life, for better or for worse. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and its potential to understand, forgive, and paying good forward to those who need a helping hand in their healing. Other Voices will touch your heart and soul-and sometimes your funny bone-with its wise observations on the human condition and its call to treat our children with love and respect to end the cycle of multi-generational family violence....

Book excerpt: This book is a search for the promises of public education and the places where these are broken by critics feeding at the academic and professional trough. This book is a venture in critical autoethnography. Exploring critique through this ethnographic technique has allowed me to bring stories to the reader that work to illuminate the personal nature of educational ethics. It works to fill the gap in education critique where selfexamination is missing. It is a cultural study of five different educational environments. Research in cultural studies attempts to account for cultural objects under conditions constrained by power and defined by contestation, conflict, and change. Cultural Studies grapples with the volatility of cultural happenings. Throwing Voices emphasizes selfreflexivity, an awareness that scholars and their scholarship are themselves caught up in the social currents and in the global circulation of meanings being studied. In taking up questions from this perspective, cultural studies both draws on and develops key strands of contemporary cultural theory: semiotics, deconstruction and poststructuralism, dialogics, subaltern and postcolonial studies. The field also draws on and develops a number of innovative methodologies: autoethnography, blurred genres of writing, and other new forms of critical research. I pay homage to satirist Lenny Bruce, and it has earned me a oneway ticket to scholarly palookaville. I had actually, not virtually transgressed, in a conference forum where virtual radicalism routinely trumps reality. I sold cars and write about the intersection of values in education and this pinnacle of American commerce. Here is also a chronicle of time spent as evaluator in a small Native American school, with an effort to draw attention to the world of socialclass, yet catalogue my own complicity in the evaluation game. And here I present my decisions as a state education department bureaucrat, set against the moral universe of the Chicago poetry slam. Finally, this is work to find the truth in a critical race theory, and hopes for solidarity in art, in jazz, and in the world of New Orleans music. I attempt to follow the breadcrumbs back through a career to find the source of compassion for working people and their children, and potential solidarity through a clearer more honest language than the language of higher education and administration.

Book excerpt: Expert, practical help for women who preach or lead worship Many women preachers and worship leaders have trouble speaking; they struggle to fully use their physical voices. Maintaining that there is often a disconnect between the woman's self-understanding as a preacher and her own body, Nancy Lammers Gross presents not only techniques but also a theologically empowering paradigm shift to help women fully embody their God-given preaching vocations. Grounding her work in the biblical story of Miriam, Gross begins with a discussion of how women are instrumental in the work of God. She then tells stories, including her own, of women's experiences in losing connection to their bodies and their physical voices. Finally, Gross presents a constructive resolution with exercises for discovering and developing a full-body voice.

Over the next two months, under the orders of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini, political prisoners around the country were secretly brought before a tribunal panel that would later become known as the Death Commission. They were not told what was happening and did not know that one ‘wrong’ answer concerning their faith or political affiliation would send them straight to the gallows. Thousands of men and women were condemned to death, many buried in mass graves in Khavaran Cemetery in the vicinity of Tehran. Through eyewitness accounts of survivors, research by scholars and memories of children and spouses of the deceased, Voices of a Massacre reconstructs the events of that bloody summer. Over thirty years later, the Iranian government has still not officially acknowledged that they ever took place.

Book excerpt: A complete introduction to analyzing and enjoying a wide variety of movies, for film students and movie lovers alike Thinking About Movies: Watching, Questioning, Enjoying, Fourth Edition is a thorough overview of movie analysis designed to enlighten both students and enthusiasts, and heighten their enjoyment of films. Readers will delve into the process of thinking about movies critically and analytically, and find how doing so can greatly enhance the pleasure of watching movies. Divided roughly into two parts, the book addresses film studies within the context of the dynamics of cinema, before moving on to a broader analysis of the relationship of films to the larger social, cultural, and industrial issues informing them. This updated fourth edition includes an entirely new section devoted to a complete analysis of the film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, along with many in-depth discussions of important films such as Citizen Kane and Silence of the Lambs. The chapter on television integrates a major expansion distinguishing between television in the digital era of the convergence of the entertainment and technology industries in comparison to the era of broadcast analogue television. The final chapter places film within the current context of digital culture, globalization, and the powerful rise of China in film production and exhibition. The authors clearly present various methodologies for analyzing movies and illustrate them with detailed examples and images from a wide range of films from cult classics to big-budget, award-winning movies. This helps viewers see new things in movies and also better understand and explain why they like some better than others. Thinking About Movies: Watching, Questioning, Enjoying, Fourth Edition is ideal for film students immersed in the study of this important, contemporary medium and art form as well as students and readers who have never taken a class on cinema before. This new edition of the book also comes with a Companion Blog https://thinkingaboutmoviesblog.wordpress.com/ that the authors will update regularly with attention to films and industry developments directly related to each chapter, plus updates to readings and resources.
