Book Synopsis The Neville Chamberlain Diary Letters by : Robert Self
Download or read book The Neville Chamberlain Diary Letters written by Robert Self and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a primary source of historical evidence and insight, it is difficult to overstate the value and importance of Neville Chamberlain's diary letters to his sisters. They represent the most complete and illuminating 'insider' record of British politics between the wars yet to be published. From 1915 Chamberlain wrote detailed weekly epistles to his sisters until his death in 1940; a confidential account of events covering the quarter of a century during which he stood at the very centre of Conservative and national politics. Beyond the fascination of the historical record of people and events, these letters are extremely valuable for the remarkable light they throw upon the personality and character of the private man lurking behind the austerely forbidding public persona.

Book Synopsis The Forgotten Prime Minister: The 14th Earl of Derby by : Angus Hawkins
Download or read book The Forgotten Prime Minister: The 14th Earl of Derby written by Angus Hawkins and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Derby was the first British statesman to become prime minister three times. He remains the longest serving party leader in modern British politics, heading the Conservative party for twenty-two years from 1846 to 1868. He abolished slavery in the British Empire, established a national system of education in Ireland, was a prominent advocate for the 1832 Reform Act and, as prime minister, oversaw the introduction of the Second Reform Act in 1867. Yet no biography of Derby, based upon his papers and correspondence, has previously been published. Alone of all Britain's premiers, Derby has never received a full scholarly study examining his policies, personality, and beliefs. Largely airbrushed out of our received view of Victorian politics, Derby has become the forgotten prime minister. This ground-breaking biography, based upon Derby's own papers and extensive archive, as well as recently discovered sources, fills this striking gap. It completely revises the conventional portrait of Derby as a dull and apathetic politician, revealing him as a complex, astute, influential, and significant figure, who had a profound effect on the politics and society of his time. As Hawkins shows, far from being an uninterested dilettante, Derby played an instrumental role in directing Britain's path through the historic opportunities and challenges confronting the nation at a time of increasing political participation, industrial pre-eminence, urban growth, colonial expansion, religious controversy, and Irish tragedy. This book is likely not only to change our view of Derby himself but also fundamentally to affect our understanding of nineteenth century British party politics, the history of the Conservative party, and the nature of public life in the Victorian age in general, including some of its foremost figures, such as Robert Peel, Lord John Russell, Lord Palmerston, William Gladstone, and Benjamin Disraeli. Volume II opens with Derby's first period as prime minister in 1852 and takes us through to his death in 1869.
Book Synopsis Bioelectric and Biomagnetic Fields by : Leonid I. Titomir
Download or read book Bioelectric and Biomagnetic Fields written by Leonid I. Titomir and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-06-27 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioelectric and Biomagnetic Fields: Theory and Applications in Electrocardiology begins with a general description of the development of extracellular bioelectric and biomagnetic fields and the methods used in their analysis and measurement. The most effective electrodynamic models and most modern approaches to topographical (synchronous multilead) measurements of the field are reviewed. The next section discusses the major approaches to analysis of the inverse problem with a detailed description of multipole technique applied to the bioelectric and biomagnetic fields measured on or near the body surface. Special emphasis is placed on the interrelationship between the electric and magnetic fields of the same bioelectric generator. The last section explains the new approaches to chronotopographical representation of the electrophysiological characteristics deduced from the parameters of the bioelectric generator. The text includes the most recent experimental protocols and results from studies in electro- and magnetocardiology and electro- and magnetoneurology.

Book Synopsis Possible Lives by : Alison Knowles Frazier
Download or read book Possible Lives written by Alison Knowles Frazier and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-09 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Possible Lives uses the saints'lives written by humanists of the Italian Renaissance to explore the intertwining of classical and religious cultures on the eve of the European Reformation. The lives of saints were among the most reproduced and widely distributed literatures of medieval and early modern Europe. During the century before the Reformation, these narratives of impossible goodness fell into the hands of classicizing intellectuals known as humanists. This study examines how the humanist authors received, criticized, and rewrote the traditional stories of exemplary virtue for patrons and audiences who were surprisingly open to their textual experiments. Drawn from a newly constructed catalog of primary sources in manuscript and print, the cases in this book range from the lure of martyrdom as the West confronted Islam to the use of saints'lives in local politics and the rhetorician's classroom. Frazier discusses the writers'perceptions of historical sanctity, the commanding place of the mendicant friars, and one unique account of a contemporary holy woman. Possible Lives shows that the classical Renaissance was also a saintly Renaissance, as humanists deployed their rhetorical and philological skills to "renew the persuasive force of Christian virtue" and "save the cult of the saints." Combining quantitative and anecdotal approaches in a highly readable series of case studies, Frazier reveals the contextual richness of this little-known and unexpectedly large body of Latin hagiography.
