Book excerpt: Johnny Walker is asked by an old friend, Karl Baumstark, to come rescue him from marauding rebels that have taken him and his granddaughter, Heather, hostage. The rebel leader has learned the archeological dig Baumstark was working on just might harbor a biblical relic, a tiara called the Devil's Crown. Legend has it that the wearer will gain supernatural powers endowed by the devil himself. With plans of universal domination, the lizard eyed Basil Crump believes Walker is the only hope he has of making Baumstalk tell where to look for the find, but he harbors an unyielding grudge against Walker that makes him as dangerous as nitroglycerin left out in the sun. When Walker arrives on the scene he soon finds out Crump is the least of his problems; Baumstark's flirtatious granddaughter is smitten with him. Walker must keep reminding himself she is only sixteen years old. Worse yet, when he finds the accursed Crown inside a cave, Walker is unable to resist trying it out. Instantly he loses all self-control and he tries to force Heather to submit to the unthinkable. Heather nearly brains Walker attempting to escape. She later fears she killed him. So ends Walker's last Adventure... or is it only the beginning of an even greater adventure?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ideal marriage is the ultimate desire of every grown adult of marriageable age, but unfortunately and against the will God, the activities of older folks in the field have painted a scary picture of the sacred institution, making an ideal marriage appear unachievable to the younger generation. This to me is an anomaly. Considering the fact that marriage is the first agent of socialization to a child, humanity owes it a duty to the younger generation to preserve the tenets of the institution based on old values handed down by God. The endemic crisis witnessed today in the institution escalated because of limited knowledge of values, inadequate culture of communication and poor handling of myths and fact of the institution. These factors among others are regrettably responsible for the embarrassing rate of divorces witnessed globally. The religious bodies have no doubt been contributing through workshops and seminars in solving the problem, but the conflict in their doctrines and restrictions does not give them the needed free hand to address the problem considering the dynamism that characterize life at that stage, so the problem has continued unabated. Quest for Ideal Marriage is written without unnecessary doctrinal restrictions to unveil those avoidable human mistakes which the young people especially, make in their quest for an ideal marriage. With recourse and sincerity, an Ideal Marriage is of course attainable by anybody who will discipline his/herself and follow the rules as handed down in this book. The difference between successful and unsuccessful marriage is simply distractions. If people have made their marriage work, you too can make yours work. All you need is to acquire the relevant information as contained herein and intelligently follow the rules in its application, and you will contract and enjoy a successful marriage. That is a promise. It is not a magic, Zig Ziglar once said “Just any dummy can succeed, if he cares to know what it takes”, in this book, you have it

Book excerpt: In the twenty years since Ray Land and Erik Meyer published their first paper on Threshold Concepts, there has been a steady stream of papers mulling over their original suggestions that learning, far from proceeding in an orderly fashion, is instead a process of struggle – perhaps alienation and confusion – that puts students in a troublesome liminal ‘in-between’ state. As their understanding develops, liminality gives way to transformational insight whereby a whole field of study comes, often quite abruptly, into focus. There is a gain but often also a loss: in this new world, old certainties, assumptions and even aspects of our identity can be left by the wayside. Threshold Concepts in the Moment is the sixth collection in the series on the subject of Threshold Concepts, following the 8th Biennial Conference held in 2021, anchored at London’s UCL but running online across the world. Its contributors, who range from ‘old hands’ to new members of the community finding their feet, mull over the insights of the threshold concepts framework in higher education, scrutinise their own fields of study, explore the implications of liminality for pedagogy and becoming professional practitioners, and consider the broad implications for pedagogy of factoring in the troublesomeness of knowledge and learning.

Book excerpt: Paradigm debates in the educational research community are a frequent if not common occurrence. How do paradigm debates in other educational fields, such as curriculum and supervision, shape educators' understanding and practice? In this volume, it is suggested that educators' adherence to particular views of curriculum and supervision is influential in guiding their beliefs and subsequent actions. For example, a widely accepted belief is that if an individual adopts a mechanistic view of the curriculum, then s/he is likely to deliver a curriculum grounded in pre-established objectives and evaluate student achievement in relationship to formulated objectives. Postmodernists contend that such educators are bound by rigid bifurcation and a constrictive linear logic. In supervision, educational leaders who favor leadership styles comprised by autocratic behaviors, tend to create school climates that favor a top-down approach to human relationships. Autocratic leaders rely on hierarchical organizational structures and styles that seek to instill compliance and subordinance. Yet prospective administrators who want concrete proposals put in practice find modern perspectives of supervision helpful. In contrast, postmodern supervisors allege that such leaders disallow the emergence of relevant and authentic relationships that might occur when conventional hierarchical structures are diminished and open lines of communication between teachers, students, administrators become normative. The chapters in this book present an in-depth analysis of how an individual's predisposition towards modern and postmodern views of curriculum and supervision are likely to influence: (1) curriculum development, (2) teaching styles, (3) leadership styles, (4) teacher and student evaluation, and (5) the missions intrinsic to the creation of professional preparation programs that serve to promulgate existing practice or create a new order of teachers and administrator.
