IN THE PRIVATE SITTING-ROOM. He showed no haste to leave the carriage. He waited, at his ease, till the motion of the train was quite arrested. Quietly turning the handle, without evincing the slightest sign of hurry, he stepped out upon the platform. He looked up and down the station. Apparently, not many people had come from Antwerp; they all seemed, already, to have left the train. The usual officials were scattered about; there was no symptom of anything having transpired, or being about to transpire, out of the common. No news had come from Antwerp. Mingling, leisurely, with the rest of the passengers, he moved with them towards the barrier. Suddenly some one came running after him. It was a guard, carrying a stick in his hand. "Pardon, Monsieur! Monsieur has left behind his cane; is it not so?" It was so. He remembered now that he had placed it beside him on the seat, and forgotten it L 161 was there. The fact of his having done so was evidence of a certain amount of mental perturbation, after all. Once clear of the station, he moved rapidly across the Place des Nations. As he neared the hotel, he became conscious of the palpitations of his heart; he felt it beating against his ribs. He paused at the door. Were there any signs of the police? None which were visible. He went in; a waiter admitted him through the inner portal. "We have a fine night, Monsieur." Mr. Musgrave allowed that it was so. Nothing had happened here.
