Book excerpt: Bitcoin is a decentralised virtual currency that uses cryptography to remove the need for trust between agents and intermediaries. Though it is deemed a currency, the cryptographic nature of bitcoin gives it characteristics similar to commodities, for example, gold. This thesis examines the relationship between spot and futures prices in the bitcoin market. It also applies the well known Gibson-Schwartz model to the pricing of bitcoin futures contracts. A sample from March 2013 to February 2015 is considered, including two separate periods of substantial increase in the bitcoin spot market. Findings suggest that the futures market was significantly in contango, with convenience yields often below -100% p.a. and significant arbitrage profits readily available. The convenience yield is found to be mean-reverting and decreasing in magnitude since 2013, with the market inefficiently pricing convenience yield risk. A negative relationship between the convenience yield and spot price volatility is observed, drawing comparisons with the electricity market. Overall, the Gibson-Schwartz model is found to provide a good fit to nearest-term futures contracts, while it fails to appropriately price bitcoin futures with longer maturities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental new Internet-based form of money is created that anyone can generate at home; people build frightening firetrap computers full of video cards, putting out so much heat that one operator is hospitalised with heatstroke and brain damage. A young physics student starts a revolutionary new marketplace immune to State coercion; he ends up ordering hits on people because they might threaten his great experiment, and is jailed for life without parole. Fully automated contractual systems are proposed to make business and the law work better; the contracts people actually write are unregulated penny stock offerings whose fine print literally states that you are buying nothing of any value. The biggest crowdfunding in history attracts $150 million on the promise that it will embody “the steadfast iron will of unstoppable code”; upon release it is immediately hacked, and $50 million is stolen. How did we get here? David Gerard covers the origins and history of Bitcoin to the present day, the other cryptocurrencies it spawned including Ethereum, the ICO craze and the 2017 crypto bubble, and the attempts to apply blockchains and smart contracts to business. Plus a case study on blockchains in the music industry. Bitcoin and blockchains are not a technology story, but a psychology story. Remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. “A sober riposte to all the upbeat forecasts about cryptocurrency” — New York Review of Books “A very convincing takedown of the whole phenomenon” — BBC News

Book excerpt: WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER From the cofounder of the longest-running Bitcoin exchange comes a compelling argument for how this digital currency will transform the global economy—and how it can work for you. A financial revolution is materializing before our eyes. The way individuals, organizations, and governments conduct transactions—from purchasing a book online to acquiring major corporations to delivering billions in financial aid—will look vastly different in the near future. Bitcoin is spearheading this revolution and may be the best investment opportunity of our time, yet most people have yet to understand its promise. In this book, Bobby C. Lee, one of the earliest, most successful pioneers in the cryptocurrency space, debunks myths and dispels fears that surround Bitcoin, arguing that this rational, logical system is superior to traditional monetary systems. He cites signs of Bitcoin’s widening acceptance: a growing community of users worldwide and multiple initiatives for investing in and holding bitcoin among major financial services organizations and institutional investors who control trillions in assets. Lee offers a primer on the best strategies for investing in this digital currency, the value of which will only continue to grow. He discusses the pros and cons, and covers the complicated yet more profitable method of acquiring bitcoin, mining. He offers predictions for the future, including price, trajectory, use, and participation in the larger economy—as well as developments in regulation, technology, business, and society. Invest in the promise of Bitcoin today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Book One of the series, I concluded four of the six cryptocurrencies remote viewed to be keepers. Fast forward six months, and we see two of those keepers gained more than 1000%. In Book Five, I break down the performance of the cryptos targeted so far. Most of those found to be keepers have performed well. In addition, I show you ten more completed remote viewing sessions. I will tell you which of the coins below are the long-term winners and which are the losers. Celo (CELO) Gnosis (GNO) Loopring (LRC) MonaCoin (MONA) Monero (XMR) NEAR Protocol (NEAR) Numeraire (NMR) RedFOX Labs (RFOX) Streamr (DATA) SwissBorg (CHSB) These are blind targets taken from a pool of two hundred crypto projects I put together out of the top-ranked two-hundred in late October of 2020. In the book, I show you my data, my analysis, and conclusions for each coin. I also give you the tools to analyze the raw data for yourself. The book is packed with information for both remote viewers and cryptocurrency fans alike. If you are new to these topics, this series is the place to begin. Remote viewing is a learned skill based on a strict protocol that harnesses a fundamental human ability. We have to different degrees an innate ESP ability we sometimes think of as intuition. It is possible through training to control this ability in much the same way a martial artist trains their body to break through preconceived physical and mental barriers. Remote Viewing utilizes a disciplined approach originally developed under the auspices of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in the 1970s. ________________ *****LATEST NEWS! Book excerpt: It is predicted that robots will surpass human intelligence within the next fifty years. The ever increasing speed of advances in technology and neuroscience, coupled with the creation of super computers and enhanced body parts and artificial limbs, is paving the way for a merger of both human and machine. Devices which were once worn on the body are now being implanted into the body, and as a result, a class of true cyborgs, who are displaying a range of skills beyond those of normal humans-beings, are being created. There are cyborgs which can see colour by hearing sound, others have the ability to detect magnetic fields, some are equipped with telephoto lenses to aid their vision or implanted computers to monitor their heart, and some use thought to communicate with a computer or to manipulate a robotic arm. This is not science-fiction, these are developments that are really happening now, and will continue to develop in the future. However, a range of legal and policy questions has arisen alongside this rise of artificial intelligence. Cyber-Humans provides a deep and unique perspective on the technological future of humanity, and describes how law and policy will be particularly relevant in creating a fair and equal society and protecting the liberties of different life forms which will emerge in the 21st century. Dr Woodrow (Woody) Barfield previously headed up the Sensory Engineering Laboratory, holding the position of Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor at the University of Washington. His research revolves around the design and use of wearable computers and augmented reality systems and holds both JD and LLM degrees in intellectual property law and policy. He has published over 350 articles and major presentations in the areas of computer science, engineering and law. He currently lives in Chapel Hill, NC, USA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In digital economies, the Internet enables the "platformisation" of everything. Big technology companies and mobile apps are running mega marketplaces, supported by seamless online payments systems. This rapidly expanding ecosystem is fueled by data. Meanwhile, perceptions of the global financial crisis, data breaches, disinformation and the manipulation of political sentiment have combined to create a modern trust crisis. A lack of trust constrains commerce, particularly in terms of consumer protection and investment. Big data, artificial intelligence, automated algorithms and blockchain technology offer new solutions and risks. Trust in our legal systems depends on certainty, consistency and enforceability of the law. However, regulatory and remedial gaps exist because the law has not kept up with technology. This work explores the role of competency and good faith, in the creation of social and legal relationships of trust; and the need for governance transparency and human accountability to combat distrust, particularly in digital economies.
