Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radically empirical exploration of movement and technology and the transformations of choreography in a digital realm. Digital technologies offer the possibility of capturing, storing, and manipulating movement, abstracting it from the body and transforming it into numerical information. In Moving without a Body, Stamatia Portanova considers what really happens when the physicality of movement is translated into a numerical code by a technological system. Drawing on the radical empiricism of Gilles Deleuze and Alfred North Whitehead, she argues that this does not amount to a technical assessment of software's capacity to record motion but requires a philosophical rethinking of what movement itself is, or can become. Discussing the development of different audiovisual tools and the shift from analog to digital, she focuses on some choreographic realizations of this evolution, including works by Loie Fuller and Merce Cunningham. Throughout, Portanova considers these technologies and dances as ways to think—rather than just perform or perceive—movement. She distinguishes the choreographic thought from the performance: a body performs a movement, and a mind thinks or choreographs a dance. Similarly, she sees the move from analog to digital as a shift in conception rather than simply in technical realization. Analyzing choreographic technologies for their capacity to redesign the way movement is thought, Moving without a Body offers an ambitiously conceived reflection on the ontological implications of the encounter between movement and technological systems.

Book excerpt: Ending a relationship can be a very painful and difficult process, especially if the relationship was long term. It is important for us to be happy with our lives and if your partner is not making you happy it may be time to move on. Below are some tips on how to end a relationship the right way.Do you want to end your relationship with a lover or spouse? If so, you need to know the etiquette of ending a relationship. Believe it or not, there are some rules about ending a relationship. If you've been with your girlfriend or boyfriend for a long time, it is important that you take things slowly. You can't just send them an announcement in text saying it's over. In fact, this is the worst way to end a relationship-especially if you've been with them for 2-5 years. Usually, if you've been with someone for this long, they probably have many feelings for you. Remember that time creates precious memories of the other person and if you are ready to move on, they might not feel the same way. This is exactly why you need to break it to them slowly. They might not realize there is a problem in the relationship. After a breakup some people will feel extreme emotions like anxiety, depression and even anger. Always take others feelings seriously and do not toy with them. Breaking up should always be done in person and if you want to avoid any drama, make sure it's done in a crowded area. You don't know if your partner will scream or cry. If they have a strong bond with you, you won't be able to avoid breaking their heart. People can be very sensitive. Without relationships, we won't be able to reproduce or carry on in our lives. That's not to say there aren't happily single people out there. Now, before you breakup you need to find out why you want to break up. You should already know the answer by now. You might want to move on because your partner has been treating you badly or you've simply fallen in love with another person.

Book excerpt: Who knew a chance meeting would end up like this? Ava Ross was a no-nonsense kind of girl. After years of trying, she still hadn't met the right one. Instead of embarking on another bad blind date, she escaped on vacation with her friend Rose Shaw. The two were a force to be reckoned with. They flirted and laughed their way through a week in the sun. Two tickets to see the Aces changed everything. She came face to face with the one man she'd always dreamed about dating. It was too bad he was married....or was he? There was no way that this could really be happening to her. Or could it? Joe Morgan was the ultimate superstar. He'd been a part of the Aces for years. He'd played cities all over North America and seen tons of women, but one always stood out in his memory. He never did see her again, that is until she walked in the door with his friend. He knew she had read about him. She'd heard rumors, gossip and lots more. The question is would she date him knowing everything she'd learned? The one girl he'd dreamed about for years was within his grasp, but would he lose her to the gaggle of ex-girlfriends in his past?

Book excerpt: "Upward mobility through the path of higher education has been an article of faith for generations of working-class, low-income, and immigrant college students. While we know this path usually entails financial sacrifices and hard work, very little attention has been paid to the deep personal compromises such students have to make as they enter worlds vastly different from their own. Measuring the true cost of higher education for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, Moving Up without Losing Your Way looks at the ethical dilemmas of upward mobility--the broken ties with family and friends, the severed connections with former communities, and the loss of identity--faced by students as they strive to earn a successful place in society"--Dust jacket.

Book excerpt: Gender isn't just about "male" or "female" anymore - if you have any doubts, just turn on your television. RuPaul is as familiar as tomato ketchup with national radio and television shows, and transgendered folk are as common to talk-shows as screaming and yelling. But if the popularization of gender bending is revealing that "male" and "female" aren't enough, where are we supposed to go from here? Cultural theorists have written loads of smart but difficult-to-fathom texts on gender, but none provide a hands-on, accessible guide to having your own unique gender. With My Gender Workbook, Kate Bornstein brings theory down to Earth and provides a practical approach to living with or without a gender. Bornstein starts from the premise that there are not just two genders performed in today's world, but countless genders lumped under the two-gender framework. Using a unique, deceptively simple and always entertaining workbook format, Bornstein gently but firmly guides you to discover your own unique gender identity. Whether she's using the USFDA's food group triangle to explain gender, or quoting one-liners from real "gender transgressors", Bornstein's first and foremost concern is making information on gender bending truly accessible. With quizzes and exercises that determine how much of a man or woman you are, My Gender Workbook gives you the tools to reach whatever point you desire on the gender continuum. Bornstein also takes aim at the recent flurry of books that attempt to naturalize gender difference, and puts books like Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus squarely where they belong: on Uranus. If you don't think you are transgendered when you sit down to read this book, you will be by the time you finish it!
