Rather that preaching detachment and distance over continued bonding and assistance, as so many therapists, self-help books, and 12-step groups currently do, prodependence celebrates the human need for and pursuit of intimate connection, viewing this as a positive force for change. Simply stated, prodependence occurs when attachment relationships are mutually beneficial--with one person's strengths filling in the weak points of the other, and vice versa. And this can occur even when an addiction is present

Book excerpt: The concept of posture control has morphed over the past century from a reflex, hierarchically controlled, innate behavior to a complex and adaptable motor act highly influenced by cognitive processes as well as confidence and attentiveness of the performer. In addition, multisensory control of posture has been recognized as a process of fusion and integration rather than summation and inhibition. Advances in computational modeling and imaging have revealed that higher cortical centers are involved in production of what were previously believed to be stereotypical, triggered reactions. Emerging evidence now supports the idea that postural behaviors are regulated by distributed control in the neuraxis and shaped by dynamic interactions of sensorimotor processes in a task- and context-dependent manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, far-right terrorism has been the black swan of terrorism studies—receiving less attention than Jihadi extremism. In this book, William Allchorn takes a deep dive into multiple geographical locales and the online space of far-right movements, uncovering the crisis narratives that are animating violent far-right extremist milieus and presenting solutions on what we can do to stop them. Using eight country case studies and the results of an online pilot project, this is the first book-length presentation and discussion of counter techniques to far-right narratives—exploring their effectiveness, the ethics of such techniques, and their ability to disrupt pathways from radicalism towards violent extremism. Coming at a time of a renewed global wave of far-right violence, this book is of use to scholars as well as practitioners in the fields of far-right studies, terrorism studies, and strategic communications.

Book excerpt: A collection of papers assessing what has been accomplished and the obstacles that remain in the transition from communism to capitalism in East-Central Europe. The papers are arranged within four sections: the transition to market economies and political pluralism; Western assistance and integration; regional relations; and country studies. Each section begins with an overview. This assessment was initiated by a formal request from the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress to the Congressional Research Service. Some of the papers were discussed in May 1994 at a conference in Washington, DC. A compilation of statistical material prepared for the conference is included as an appendix. This book delves into the determinants of successful cooperation between bi- and multilateral donor agencies at the example of Western aid to Eastern Europe in the period from 1990 to 1996. In raising the assumption that networking between international organizations cannot be stimulated by appealing to norm-oriented behavior but is contingent upon the existence of common interests, the idealist view of international relations is seriously challenged. Comparing different assistance sectors - energy, telecoms, mass privatization, agriculture, statistics, central banking, environment and education - it is shown that donor coordination is a form of collective action initiated by donors in response to sectoral market failure which is perceived as significant because it threatens the non-attainment of basic goals or inflicts own projects with high costs or risks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Part of the Peace addresses three areas in international affairs which are of particular concern to Canadian foreign policy makers: multilateralism, regionalism and peacekeeping. The authors consider Canada's involvement within various multilateral institutions, in particular the United Nations and the GATT. The five essays in 'Disengagement From Regionalism' trace developments within Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific, as enthusiasm for regional integration ebbs and flows. The 1994 edition of Canada Among Nations concludes with the issue of peace. As the cold-war era recedes into memory, the new world order turns out to be a time of great uncertainty. Civil strife in Bosnia, Somalia, the former Soviet Union and Cambodia challenge our traditional notions of peacekeeping. As the United Nations' mandate to intervene evolves to meet these challenges, so Canadians are reconsidering their role within that mandate.
